Played around a lot more with building tonight.

It actually needs huge improvements as some parts are very annoying. When I built metal buildings from the prefab tab, I couldnt attach my own walls to it. They wouldn't snap at all. Also can't place some walls at 90 degree angles as it only snaps in a straight line. Things like that.
I really enjoy that part of the game but it really needs improving.

I assumed I was just missing something and gave up. Sure there is a way to stop the walls from snapping?

Also another pet peeve: they're absolute bastards for having bullets hit an invisible barrier a few inches beyond the edge of an object. Very frustrating with ammo low at times, to see your shot blocked by nothing at all.

Someone posted for the building over in general, that if you pop a roof on, then the wall will snap to a 90 degree.
But I totally agree, building is awful...you can't even change the length or size of fences or walls....so sometimes you are left with gaps etc.

I plan to eventually build a town, and when I get frustrated...save my game....then massacre everyone in that town...and reload the game.
Aside from the town building, I'm loving the game and the quest for adhesive

You can build corner walls for that

Only way I have manged to stop the snapping is by getting really close which trying to build so the camera is not in a position to allow it. This can be very frustrating. Also when trying to make an actual house type - the ODC in me goes haywire when leaving gaps in a wall :pac::pac:

Corners are horrible to work with. They are actually inside-out or some such. The inside lining of the corner faces outwards and is very bad looking.
Also the snapping will only work when facing the right direction which is weird.

Then there are other issues like snapping walls with absolutely nothing underneath them. They should snap but be height adjustable so you can actually have it touch the ground. This is not difficult and many other games already have it working well (think survival games such as Rush or Ark which are still in beta)

All that said, I still love the game. fences shouldn't really be snappable so I like how they are set up (but could do with a few different lengths).

I decided last night I'm gonna restart from the beginning.
Kinda gimped myself with my build atm. I've not done a whole lot and only level 8.
As for the building - I'll probably clean up the settlement, pop up some defenses and hope for a patch in the near future that will improve things :P

In regards the building, particularly perimeter fences, this is what i found was best in regards making one without leaving gaps and making it decent:

    - Walls as the staple since they snap into place. FYI if you hold E and then use the mouse wheel you should be able to move the wall up & down to stop gaps at the bottom if the terrain changes.

    - Small walls for when you want to deviate or change direction of where the next wall should go. The small walls (that look like doors almost) don't snap with the normal walls and clip into the big walls without leaving a gap, then build another regular wall after and continue.

    - Fences (the high ones) for when you need to make a 90 degree direction. Since sometimes the corner wall sometimes doesn't snap where you want it to, and trying to make a normal wall go 90 degrees doesn't work since it will automatically snap straight back, the fence is best for this.

I had this installed on my hdd and the load times were unbearable so I swapped it over to my ssd, now I barely have time to read the load screens now, huge improvement.

    100. 80 in the first session I played was far too close, felt like I was playing through a magnifying glass.

Took me a while also to find out that you can't open the console in-game unless your keyboard is set to US layout, and also that when you're using the console to change your FOV you have to enter two numbers, one for 3rd person and then one for 1st person (i.e. fov 100 100). And even hacking it via console is a moot point if you don't hack the .ini files, which make it reset every time.

You can access the console using @ if your keyboard isn't set to US.

For those complaining about the wall snapping or can't create a corner I found out how you can bypass it: Select the wall you're about to build and just aim a bit towards the ground, the snapping will stop and the item will go green. You don't have to be up close to where you're putting it.

I've been able to do some proper building this way and it's a bit stupid you have to go around it like that.

the thing pissing me of with building is the poxy pillars inside every cube thingy. althogh you dont need to use them you can just slap a floor down and strick walls around it and i noticed when placing things if the ground isnt perfectly flat they tend to hover above it, overall the building aspect is a big let down. also i dont think any raiders have tried to rob my places yet and ive sunk well over 20 hours into it.

Have low defense on one of your settlements and watch it burn :pac:
I don't think you get attacked if your defenses are high enough.

Had something similar happen to me a few times but only when I saved and quit to the desktop, was doing some work, then tried to open it again, would open the menu to play the game but wouldn't launch, had to do a re-start of the pc and then it worked but never got booted back to the desktop from within the game when it was actually running.

Back working now again, not really sure if anything I did fixed it to be honest.

I thought I had accidentally installed it on the wrong drive the load times were so slow!

As I'm restarting later myself I was curious of the same. Here's a little tip from the other thread:
I'll go one better. I've got a red dress, a hat and a pair of sunglasses that altogether give me +4 charisma. My base charisma is 6 so when I get into those clothes I'm up to 10 and pretty much nail any speech check I get. Even though I'm a guy I still look ah-mah-zing in it. :D

I'll probably go with 4 base + these. That'll do to start out. I'll be going high Int (probably 8) for quicker XP.

I think you need 6 for local leader so Ill probably start with that, I can crossdress later if its not enough :D

Is 5 not a ridiculous amount to put into Luck just to get Idiot Savant though? Is there any other advantage to investing that much in it?

I am confused by the Perk tree. So at the start of the game you assign point to your SPECIAL, this unlocks the perk levels up to the assigned amount of points under each SPECIAL stat. Then I can upgrade to any unlocked level perk in SPECIAL up to the corresponding number that is assigned?

I am new to Fallout and this is confusing me greatly

    Nope.

Heh, my Wounding 10mm utterly melts Deathclaws. Very little can resist 25 bleed damage that stacks.

I took 6 in in luck for Better Criticals, and also put a point or two into Mysterious Stranger, which has saved me a few times.

I've also maxed Idiot Savant - when it procs on a quest completion it's sweet. Quests can give you a level or two depending on how lucky you get.

SPECIAL is the base line for your stats, perks build on that but you need to hold right mouse to see them all.

So intelligence leads to science and anything science related (hacking, crafting, etc:)

Each perk needs an amount of base levels in the SPECIAL line ie NErd Rage is the last Intelligence perk and it needs 10 in Intelligence.

To get that you would put 10 into Intel but could prolly benefit from putting points into perks. That is ultimatley your choice and its what you SPECIAL :D

I've one of those as well and it really does kick ass. Pump a clip from that into something and there's a very good chance it's dead.

Building is awful, and i cant stop myself from doing it constantly, i havent fired a shot in anger in hours! :D

Have a few settlements on the go at the moment built 3 up, one is a town i killed everyone in and no one is coming to it.. shame..dam shame. I have 4 linked up, making a few caps of it at the moment. go to your work station thing go to misc and you should find any cap's the town or linked towns have generated.

Also armor seems a bit limited at the moment, i must have got really lucky at the start because i got some mutant slayer rare armor of a legendary bandit and nothing i have found in the past 2 days comes close to its stats but im fed up looking at it lol.

I have 14 or so settlements and the attacks are pointless noone ever dies, they are purely free XP missions.

Cant for the life of me get new people into them tho

It stacks?!?? That has to be an oversight. Does the same go for burning? This would explain why my burning laser seems so effective.
I thought I had accidentally installed it on the wrong drive the load times were so slow!

As mentioned earlier, there seems to be a weird bug where people that unlock their framerate in the ini get a much faster load time, even on SSD.

Lads, re building stuff: Stop. Just stop. It doesn't mean anything, it doesn't look like they've bothered creating gameplay mechanisms to provide any purpose to the depth of the building mechanics. It's basically lego. Really irritating, time-consuming, counter-intuitive, bureacratic-nightmare lego. Like minecraft with a horrendous UI and none of the charm.

need to build the recruitment towers, under the power heading

And yes I agree the building (and settlements overall) seem completely inconsequential. Which I think ultimately was the right decision, people shouldn't be forced to do it.

Wish there was some way of locating my different companions or at least contacting them, dogmeat was in a kennel in Sanctuary but now I've no idea where he is

Just picked up the cryolator, amazing weapon
