The facebook allegement is that they are hoarding profits for themself...

The expectation when you invoke charity to make a sale that a not paltry amount of the proceeds go to the charity. If 1 cent for a 2 euro card is all that is being donated so be it, but they ought to be saying "1 cent of your purchase goes to charity"

Well sure if someone on FB said it then it must be 100% correct.

This is how charity works though. They take the vast majority of what they make for themselves and a small percentage goes to the actual people.

Honestly do you think people playing those scratch cards give two ****s it's for charity? No it's the same reasons people buy the non charity ones in the shops,

But are Ryanair a registered charity or just a company that gives a bit to charity every now and then?

I dont know why people are surprised by this, thought it was common knowledge. Remember their millionth passenger who was supposed to get free flights for life?

Ryanair would not be pushing those scratch cards so hard if they were not getting a good chunk of that cash. Do the individual staff who sell them get a chunk too?

Beware large companies who try to exhibit altruism.

The envelope once every 125 is wrong, You have a 1 in 125 chance of winning, they dont take the envelopes away, so it will always be 1 in 125

good point, also you are not buying a 'chance to win one million',
youre buying a 'chance to win a chance to win 1 million'

According to MOL in a twitter Q&A, staff get 10% of scratch card sales. Although he also claimed that 'the bulk of the remainder goes to charity' which was quite a misleading response if it's actually as little as 1% or less.

One is an organisation setup purely for charitable purposes, with millions of euro worth of sales over recent years. The other is the arch typical industry giant who do everything they can to make profit and don't hide it either.

So based on figures published in the media, who gave more for charitable purposes, Rehab or Ryanair?

I was posting that as fact rather than comment. I couldn't give 2 ****s if retards want to buy their scratch cards or how much they give to charity.
Hi there Michael, I see you have a Boards account now. That 'being nice' phase was never going to last.

I know what you mean but I'm also saddend by the fact that when we hear "for charity" we automatically expect a scam. And we're usually right.

Unfortunately that's most of our experiences, Event the big charity's are mostly admin. You know rock up to some place in Africa. Buy all the land rovers and stuff they need locally rent out the hotels money is no object.

So give a pass to a company for scamming people under the flag of charity? That would set a wonderful precedent; never be able to trust a charity effort again, and the level of genuine charitable donations would ultimately plummet, leading to unnecessary and avoidable suffrage.

The charities have done a good enough job of putting people off donating by spending all the money on themselves.

The charity could easily remove their name from the tickets if they think that customers are getting scammed, the fact that the charity allows Ryanair to use their name means that they don't care.

I was thinking of Rehab too when seeing all the outrage. :)

I think some have very naive impression about the whole charity industry.

In fairness, who are Ryanair selling the scratch cards to? The same dribbling idiots who burst into applause when the pilot pulls off the astounding feat of landing the plane. That's who.

    Who cares...

This is the type of superiority that makes me hate Boards. You are an idiot.

I doubt many people buy these because they think all of the money goes to charity, they buy because they want to gamble.

It doesn't matter if its €55 or €55,000 they give to charity, it's still money going somewhere so I Don't see why/ how one person posting something on Facebook to their 20 friends suddenly is a scam or news.

Ryanair are entitled to do what they want with the money and being honest, they "stats" are very misleading - it gives the impressionn that they are making €16m when the reality is they are making nowhere near that. I'd be surprised if the profit off that was even €500k.

Imo, RyanAir selling charity scratchcards is no different than those Chuggers on the streets. The money gets swallowed up in admin, wages, commissions and profits etc, with a paltry % actually ending up in the hands of a charity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,654 ✭✭✭IngazZagni

The problem I have with this is that the cabin crew when making the announcement over the pa system give the impression that all the money goes to charity. They call them charity scratch cards. That's very misleading considering such a small amount actually ends up going to charity.

Defrauding your own customers. Stealing money intended for charity. Disgusting behaviour.
Yet some on here defending them because they are successful and because they are Irish.
    Have some standards ffs.

They are not defrauding anything or stealing the money. They are selling scratch cards.

And for those of you who get all the news from facebook, it might do no harm to read this:

Its a well known fact that only approx 15% of all monies raised for charity actually reach the people in need.

The rest is paid in wages, big salaries, advertising etc.

Even the shop in Crumlin hospital was skimmed.

If you're going to donate, donate direct.
