Ryanair have probably seriously f*cked up. Alleged scratch card charity scam?

I have just returned from holiday courtesy of Ryanair. During the flight, the cabin crew were punting the Ryanair charity scratch cards. They were selling them using the children's hospice charity CHAS which, they said, benefited from their sale. They also said that you had the chance of winning 1 million euro.

They must have sold at least 25 cards on board our flight. On later investigation, I discovered that in 2013 they sold about 16 million euro worth of scratch cards, and distributed 55,000 euro to charities, ie about 0.3%, or less than 1 cent for each 2 euro scratch card went to charity.

There is also only one card per year with the chance of winning the million euro, but if you are lucky enough to get this card, you are then invited to choose from 125 envelopes, only one of which has a cheque for 1 million euro.

The million euro will only be won once every 125 years. This is an utterly cynical way for Michael O'Leary and Ryanair to increase their profits, using a children's cancer charity to do so.

They could hardly stoop any lower.

So where did the person obtain details on how many scratch cards were sold by Ryanair and how much was donated to charity as a result explicitly of those sales?

If it's true it could be a huge story .... I mean not just the tiny percentage, but also the 125 envelopes!

This is why I only donate to local charitys like SVP.

It will probably turn out, someone in the government is sitting on the board of who ever runs the scratch cards, they will say sorry blah blah blah news papers will stop talking about it and nothing will change. Just like the last scratch card scam.

Well over 1 million, but clearly below 2 with a profit of 16 million euro a year.

So since 2009 they have made close to 100 million euro on scratch cards and have donated little more than 1% to charity. Also nobody has ever won their 1 million jackpot.

I was posting that as fact rather than comment. I couldn't give 2 ****s if retards want to buy their scratch cards or how much they give to charity.

I am all for Ryanair and how they made flying affordable to many of us ,but this is a blatent scam.It will need Government action to stamp it out and protect the stupid ,or senile .

they fly approx 10,000,000 passengers a month.

shares are meaninglessness if the shares were over a 3 month period then thats = .00005% of there passengers

Don't see the issue really.If there is a discrepancy they can throw them a million or two presumably,probably make a publicly stunt of it.

Doubt anyone will give a ****,we expect this from Ryanair.

Charging for peanuts and 'leaking' plans for stand-up passenger flights isn't the same category of potentially defrauding customers under the guise of charity. An actual investigation ought to be petitioned.

In fairness, who are Ryanair selling the scratch cards to? The same dribbling idiots who burst into applause when the pilot pulls off the astounding feat of landing the plane. That's who.

Who cares...

So give a pass to a company for scamming people under the flag of charity? That would set a wonderful precedent; never be able to trust a charity effort again, and the level of genuine charitable donations would ultimately plummet, leading to unnecessary and avoidable suffrage.

They never set it up to donate to charity. They set up the scratchcards apparently to generate revenue with some money going to charity which is what they do. What's the issue here or are you under the impression the scratchcards are solely to donate money to charity and you think Ryanair is just hoarding profits for itself?

The facebook allegement is that they are hoarding profits for themself...

The expectation when you invoke charity to make a sale that a not paltry amount of the proceeds go to the charity. If 1 cent for a 2 euro card is all that is being donated so be it, but they ought to be saying "1 cent of your purchase goes to charity"

The envelope once every 125 is wrong, You have a 1 in 125 chance of winning, they dont take the envelopes away, so it will always be 1 in 125

I like to dress up as a Nigerian Prince when taking Ryanair flights. There is a 15 - 25 minute period of opportunity to make some cash. After that , the trolley dolly's come round and steal your mark, sorry, customer!
