While I'm sure it's best practice to do that, I've never bothered. Few wipes with kitchen paper does the trick. The only time it won't is if the thermal paste has literally dried up. Your rig won't explode if you don't use isopropyl alcohol to remove the thermal paste :p

If your comfortable doing that id say fine, but its definitely not best practice.

Kitchen paper will leave behind loads of paste and possibly little bits of paper as well. Trying to clean thermal paste off withou cleaning agent is like trying to clean up spilled honey with paper. If you're stuck, a bit of white spirit will get it clean...or a bit of vodka from the drinks cabinet either.

Also have a problem could use some help with, built a PC for someone about two years ago:
    FX-6300 (never overclocked)
    AMD 7850 2gb
    CX 500W PSU
    Asrock 970 AM3 board

Basically the PC will boot up ok if left powered off for more than 24-30 hours,if its then turned off and rebooted all power lights, fans etc all turn on and spin but no signal to the screen. The PC is totally unresponsive at this point, power button reset etc dont work. Also keyboard is backlit and it does not light up at this point either. So either USB's are not being powered or the driver is not getting a chance to load. Unsure which. He brought it to a repair shop who basically checked the Ram,GPU(breaking the pci retention clip in the process!) and came to the conclusion it was the motherboard. Had a look at the board and no burst caps or anything and visually looks fine. I know have the PC and the first thing im going to try is using a spare PSU to rule that in/out. Anything else i should be trying? When i arrive earlier to collect the PC when i booted it up it ran chkdsk,as the PC had to be powered down by pulling the plug, could OS corruption cause this? Also there is no bios splash screen at boot when its going to go unresponsive.

Strange that it will power on and work fine, gaming etc no problem but if powered off and tried again immediately it becomes unresponsive with no video signal. And leaving it for 24-30hrs allows it to boot up again amd work normally!

    Any advice appreciated

Looks like it is the power supply, pretty crap that it only lasted just under two years. Corsair CX 500W for anyone interested. Have to get onto them for a replacement, was bought from HWVS so going to contact corsair directly. Ughhh, now to rebuild it for him with a new power supply!!

Also goes to show these technicians know F all about troubleshooting, they said it was the motherboard.

I know a reasonable amount about computers, and much less than a lot of the lads here, and I'd be surprised to meet many who knew more than I do around Ireland in repair shops and the like

Id be similar,im no expert. I dont do this for a living or anything. Its just something i have a big interest in. At this stage ive built a few PC's,troubleshooted an few others and i try to learn more about them as i go. But to not check the PSU in this case was pretty bad. They were sending a 15 year old child off to replace a part that was not at fault and wouldnt have fixed the problem.

If i build a PC for someone i tend to try and tell them i cant be on the hook for support as its too time consuming,in this case with a disappointed 15 year old though thought id try help out.

Not really, PC repair and stuff is going pretty much downhill. Nearly everyone knows someone now that's half decent at computers.

Fallout preload and the new Call of Duty must be killing the servers.

I've been d/l-ing a couple of games and usually where there's a solid 7MB/s it's dropped to 1MB/s. I'm kind of surprised they're getting maxed-out, I thought they were with Amazon's servers for some reason.

One thing about country living is that my speeds are so crap, I am totally unaffected by slow servers, as they always outpace my internet anyways :(

See that spike? Thats why its slowing down. 1/3 peak on already huge throughput is no laughing matter. Nearly 3Tbps

Theyve their own CDN platform, but I think its based off Highwinds.

Unexpected upside: nothing is a disappointment.

In fact, sometimes "nothing" is a positive because you haven't been billed for exceeding limits.

That's interesting. I wonder if they'll give out data about which release caused it, whether it was COD or FO4 or a balanced combo?

I finally joined the 2560x1440 club. I bought a second hand Qnix 2710 there.

Got it overclocked to 110hz. I'm surprised at how well my 7970 is holding up.

Picture clarity is fantastic, fluidity not so much but I knew that before getting it. Well worth the €200 I paid.

Ive found using external vsync really helps with that, nvidia control panel is pretty good at it. Smooth as butter even under 96Hz,which mine is overclocked to. AMD have a similar function in the control panel iirc

Witcher 2 is a great example of it,using the games vsync i was getting stuttering, screen tear etc, used control panel vsync and all that disappeared. Much smoother experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I'm not a fan of any kind of Vsync. Don't get me wrong it's definitely better than my old 60hz just not as good as I was hoping.

I think it's more to do with the slower pixel response and ghosting on these. It creates a non removable motion blur effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,617 ✭✭✭Revoker88

I can understand not wanting to use vsync,a lot of games were screen tearing for me without it though. Anything that will have drops below the 96Hz ive used it for, nvidia have an adaptive vsync so it only kicks in when the game drops below the refresh rate, which works very well.

Yeah for the money the Qnix is great. I suppose if they didnt have some issues theres no way we would be getting them for the price we do. Best of luck with it man,ive personally really enjoyed using mine. Even browsing and general desktop use they are great, all that real estate:)

VSYNC has to buffer the frames, introducing input lag... ruining the point of hitting high FPS and high refresh rates. Turn it off for everything and you'll eventually get used to tearing... most games don't even tear on me when I'm at 120Hz. If you're going to be using v-sync I'd say don't even bother with enthusiast gaming monitors... just get one that's got high resolution, good colours, features etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,617 ✭✭✭Revoker88

As long as the framerate doesnt drop below the refresh rate of the monitor you shouldnt get tearing, most likely why your not getting any with a stable 120Hz. I just cant stand tearing, probably mostly from playing Arma 3. Which can see dips to sub 30 fps which is jarring enough without adding tearing to that.

Also on games i can maintain well over 96Hz ive no need for vsync, just on the games that drop below that regularly i use it for.

Regardless of vsync on or off games run noticably smoother @96Hz so i wouldnt say its a case of you dont see any benefit while using v sync with high refresh rates

Sweet... You need to join the Fury master race! Would pair very well with that monitor, those cards perform great at 1440p! And all of them have fantastic air cooling.
