Just looking for a quick bit of advice. I'm building a new PC soon and I was thinking about waiting until Black Friday (27th November) before picking up better deals on components. I'm hoping there will be more deals online then. So do you regulars reckon I'm wise to wait until then, or will I be wasting my time?

If you're not looking for specific models of components then it might be worth holding on. What I mean by that is, if you're saying I want an i5 6600k and an MSI TwinFrozr GTX980ti then it might not be worth the wait. When I built first computer I built it slowly piece-by-piece whenever a deal came up. Made some significant savings overall but not necessarily the components I was looking for i.e. I ended up getting an FX8350 instead of an i5.

OcUK made an error on my order, and asked me if I was interested in picking up anything else if they gave me a good discount. Ended up with this. Only ordered a new 4K monitor the other day as well...

What sort of a discount did you get out of them?

£535 including two day shipping, so it was really decent. Works out at about €750 which is 30 cheaper even than HWV (without shipping factored in). It's about 20% faster than the reference 980Ti so it's really a beast. Should be able to get another €30 back for Rainbow Six Siege that comes with it. I only bought the 390X a short while ago as well. Between that and my 4K monitor I've now spent about 1.2K just with Fallout 4 in mind....which cost me €35.

OcUK are amazing to deal with. They gave me a massive discount on an NZXT Source 340 for my OH a few months back because a previous order I'd put it was 2 days late. I didn't even ask, was simply putting in an inquiry and they checked my details.

Was that for the the monitor they decided would be better in a few pieces instead of one? It's the least they could do after that. Save €25 on a game only to spend 50 times that on hardware for it. PC gaming logic, ya gotta love it.

Their forum is great too, and they respond really quickly, way faster than other companies email based support.

    Really impressed by the service.

Dabs were the guys that shipped the smashed monitor - what happened here was that I made an order, was delayed a week, and it eventually turned out that the items weren't actually in stock and won't be. So nothing major, but they really made up for it all the same!

OcUK definitely gets the thumbs up from me going forward. You really can't put a price on service of that quality.

I've only used OCUK once to buy a monitor back in 07 or 08. Can't remember exactly. I wanted it shipped to my student address, and put the details in the order but instead they shipped it to my home address which was the address on my CC. I was waiting for delivery when my folks called me to ask about the large box that arrived.

I'm going to be building a Skylake based rig soon and I was considering OCUK. What are they like to deal with returns ect?

I'm negative toward oc uk. Sent me a case without standoffs and they were hard to deal with, basically trying to brush me off for as long as possible. Ended up getting standoffs elsewhere.

Can't comment on returns but I have used them for parts over the years and have never had an issue with anything I'v bought from them.

Amazon.co.uk cost around the same item wise but are hard to beat for postage.

Dabs get lots of good references on here but personally any time I'v looked into buying from them they were much, MUCH more expensive than Overclockers and Amazon.

Have used OCUK in the past and had no problems with them at all, they even include jellys with the deliveries:)

I find that they are not great on price though and can usually be easily beaten on that front. If i buy off them these days its usually an item on sale.

That's much the same experience I had with returns with them a few years back. Took dozens of messages to get it resolved and they repeatedly tried to brush me off on it.

A few years back yeah they had issues. Now it's like an entirely different company.

^For it was at the start of this summer. It was a minor issue, but tbh I felt like I was sold a display case or something. And also OCuk is quite expensive, aside from their sales.

These are the reasons I deal with Amazon, one example being I ordered a roccat nyth 2 weeks ago, from warehouse deals, was like €91.
So it arrives in just the product box not a brown Amazon box and the dispatch sticker is stuck on the back of the box.
Not overly impressed I mail them having a moan that they put the sticker on the mouse box and it not having a shipping box, 1 mail later and the price is refunded no questions asked!

I bought a couple of bit & pieces of them down the years and ya, Dabs do lean heavily on the overpriced side. I was checking out a MB price yesterday evening on the OCUK site and I found the same MB for €80 less on Mindefactory. Don't ask me the model because I was checking so many out, but I do remember that huge price discrepancy jumping out at me.

Built a pretty nice rig there few months back.
Now seeing these new threads with ddr4, 6th gen cpu's I'm feeling down :(

Haha don't do it man. Really is no need. There's a storm brewing. Gpu and cpu wise.

Well lads, any recommendations as to a second hand board for a G1610 CPU? Looking to throw together a cheapo gaming system with bits and bobs lying around.

Second hand or super cheap new works too. Doesn't look to be much on Sdverts at the moment.

That's a relief. I might give them a shot again sometime so.

What sort of games are you playing? You will find the G1610 and the slightly better sandybridge pentiums are no good for stuff like BF4, GTA V, etc, the minimum framerates are just too low even though the averages are passable. It'll just cause so much grief. Obviously if you're just playing fairly light stuff or more indie titles it will be grand. Amazon usually have s1155 boards for about €45 or so, getting harder to get them now though, they don't even appear 2nd hand much.

It's not for me, at least probably not. I grabbed thr CPU to test an Z77 I had to see if it was really dead (it is).

I have a 7870 lying around and want to get a new PSU (my 650 watt Superflower is 5 years old at this stage), so was going to grab a small case, a stick of RAM off Adverts for 15 - 20 quid and a motherboard.

Will probably sell it then. The 7870 is still a respectable GPU, might sell it separately so as relieve someone of the potential grief of the low frames.

The performance boost between what you have and what you will get from a CPU upgrade is only around 3-10% max and if gaming not even that. Sadly until AMD get there act together and release a valid rival to Intel's current chips, I sadly don't see this changing anytime soon.

Its not amd , its our current manufacturing proceses. Current cpus are very much limited by the interconnects between the transistors and until we solve this / design new architectures don't expect processors to be getting any more powerful. Just more power efficient , and more cores per chip.

Moore's law is still hanging in there though. More cores = more power. Intel need to just stop being scabby with them.

i3's should have been changed to 4 proper cores by now. i5 to 6 cores, entry i7 to 8 cores and all with HT and overclockable models.

AMD might give them the kick up the arse they need next year to do this.
