I'm thinking of building a computer again, don't know for sure something like Skylake S i5/i7, 32gb ram, Fury X gpu or R3xxx , Samsung 951 m2 ssd, and upgrade my monitor from fullhd to 4K

Hey guys, sorting out a PC for a tech illiterate dude. It's filled with malware etc and the copy of Windows it's running is not genuine (was put on by his son I believe).

Is it possible for me to use my old Windows 7 key to activate it? Or is that technically illegal? (Is my Windows 10 copy tied to that key??)

Any suggestions on a sub <100e Mechanical keyboard? Have my eyes set on the CM quickfire TK with white back lighting but can't seem to find it anywhere at a decent price.

If you've upgraded your W7 key to a W10 key, then the W7 key will no longer work afaik.

Actually ended up getting one of adverts over the weekend. Got the logitech g710+, reviews seem to be fairly positive. Not 100% what I wanted, but it's fine for the budget. Cherry mx browns, and white backlighting, gonna paint the orange piece on it either white or black and it will be sweet.

I love my 710, especially the programmable keys. I use them daily now.

Hey guys, I'm considering puttung together a little machine for the sitting room, something for media (netflix etc) as well as perhaps light gaming.

I have an Asrock Z77 Pro3 from before that I thought was dead but might still be salvageable. I was thinking of using my old SupwrFlower Amazon 650w PSU for the system. I was thinking a 750ti would be a good card for the system, super efficient and enough to push med/low graphics with ease at 1080p.

Any recommendations as to a mobo? Case? Would you recommend NOT going with my Z77 Pro3 (Asrock)? For being to big I mean.

Any more tips? I'm perfectly happy to grab stuff off Adverts, but a nice efficient system is desireable. I also have a 7870 but it migjt be a tad hot for the system (it cools superbly in my own rig, but I imagine airflow will be more limited in this system).

Basically I'm looking for general pointers. I picked up a G1610 on Adverts to see if my Asrock board really is dead. I could use that in the system but I'm thinking a G1610 might be a tad slow for a gaming rig?

I used the Silverstone GD09 case for my living room PC. It's dead quiet and doesn't collect dust. It can hold a full ATX mobo and full-size PSU so you can build with those parts that you already have. FLIRC IR dongle + Harmony remote for remote control action with Plex.

So was just about to head to bed when I started smelling smoke. Look down and see its coming from under my desk. The power brick to my QNIX QX2710 had heated to the point that it was smoking. That was a scary experience - I'd hate to think what could have happened if I went to bed early tonight.

No visible signs of damage whatsoever, and the monitor still works. Will have to be very careful in the future.

I wouldn't use that power brick again if I was you. Seriously, it's not worth the risk.

Scary. I turn off all my computer equipment at nighttime from the wall actually. And I have two smoke alarms in my room...can never be too careful!

I turn mine off at wall, always when finished using. My Mobo lights and now red ring on monitor base remind me.

Yeah I'll have to get a new one. Thankfully the QNIX is my secondary monitor so it's plugged out for now.

When I smelled the smoke I instantly yanked the power and once again my desktop won't power on. Exact same thing happened a few weeks ago after a power cut. It worked after a few days last time so at the moment I'm just checking it every few hours.

Think this is the excuse I need to upgrade :-)

I have been leaving mine running all night for the past few days. Made the mistake of buying GTA V as a download before looking at the size of the fecking thing. With my 3MB download speed its going to take most of the week to download (only doing it at night time).

This is making me think twice though.

If movies and TV shows have taught me anything, it's a bomb that is about to go off. Does the drive still work? Can you access the data on it or save new data to it?

A quick google seems to suggest a Seagate drive that is on it's way out. Get it backed up if there is anything important on it.

Yeah, the only time I've ever heard or heard of hard drives making unusual noises it means they are about to fail.

That happened to me with an Xbox 360 power brick. Just started pumping smoke. Also had it happen with a battery charger that started puffing smoke.

Had to laugh when the misses rang and said "should it be doing that?"

I leave a lot of my equipment on overnight. NAS, digital box, HTPC and a few other bits. Getting better about turning some stuff off, but like Terror said, I just fit a smoke alarm into the rooms where I run this equipment.

I leave my NAS and router on all night but the router always had me worried cos it was always very hot so I got an old PC case fan, rigged it to an old 12v adapter and popped that on top of the router. Nice and cool now. Everything else is switched off at night.

I am in the market for new disks and noticed Toshiba X300 disks (4T, 5T and 6T available).
They are at least 20 euro cheaper than WD, Seagate and HItachi and seem to be performing faster as they are 7200 rpm rather than 5400.

I tried to find reliability info on those drives but couldn't. Any (anecdotal) evidence/opinions on Toshiba disks out there??

    See:
Toshiba got back into the 3.5” form-factor hard drive business in 2012, when it acquired the production assets from Hitachi as part of Western Digital’s purchase of Hitachi. This acquisition meant there would be more suppliers of 3.5” form factor hard drives than the existing two (Seagate and Western Digital). After Toshiba took over the business, the early 3TB drives (model: DT01ACA300) were dual branded Hitachi 3TB drives, model: HDS723030BLE640. While the branding is now completely Toshiba, it is safe to say that a fair amount of Hitachi technology continues to live on in the Toshiba 3.5” drives.

Personally I'm a fan of WD, they really know what they're doing.

I have a mix of different drives and sofar only WD have actually failed me. The WD 3T 2012.

Weird that there are so few really good reports on endurance and reliability, you would expect many data centres to be able to publish good figures.

This is the only recent link I could find:
    https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/

Unfortunately the X300 drives are too new to be in that report. But Hitachi has a good record there.
