DO NOT use this video...I followed instructions and made a balls of the job. Oh why didn't Halfords sell gold paint for the Yaris... :( so disappointed..
I hope you're joking. You can see by the reflections on the paint just how bad this would look :D

seen a good few threads on that at this stage. seems like a good cheap alternative if you are doing a whole car, quick and easy to get the paint on and not as much an emphasis on the prep work if you are painting with Hammerite etc, just a quick scuff up.

seems the trick is in the flatting back. most links suggest putting the paint on very thick and then flatting it back up to 2500-3000 grit paper and then machine polishing. i'd say the results straight from the roller aren't great, particularly so if you were expecting a colour match.

don't be disheartened if it's in a jock now, perfect opportunity to buy a few different grades of sandpaper and a bottle of g3. the colour mismatch wouldn't be too noticeable on the rear valance if it was good and glossy.

best thing about the outside of the car is that you can't see it when you're inside the car! drive it on :)

try again, fail again, fail better. something like that. my first few attempts at bodywork repairs were absolutely shocking, i mean properly shocking stuff, got handier over time though and i can do a decent repair now. i think everybody ****s it up the first few times!

do a bit more research and attack it again.

I'm just afraid of the laughing... It cat, but the only paint that was a perfect match was the paint on my hands :D thanks lads for trying to cheer me up though.. Here is a pic, make sure ye are sitting because I nearly passed out when I seen how it came out..

Ah don't be. People won't notice. I drove around with most of the right rear side caved in, holes in the body and a bump strip missing. GvidoR drives around with more mismatched parts than Bruce Jenner and Pantibliss combined.

Ah ya, but it is bad.. I thought the colour would match but maybe because the car is faded and that's why its sticks out like an infected thumb..

It's not as bad as I expected. I wanted to see a lumpy bright yellow bonnet...

lol, i was expecting something much worse. that'd blend in decent with a small bit of sanding and a polish. obviously there will still be a difference overall, but it won't be shocking.

one thing i've realised, whether it be right or wrong is to not mask off in straight lines like that. i probably wouldn't have masked that vertical line at all, if you didn't you'd be actively mentally doing a bit of blending without even noticing. that kind of masking tends to give very harsh edges that are a bit more difficult to undo.

Ya, your probly right about the masking, you say sand and a polish should improve it? What grit should be used?

if it were me, i'd take off the masking tape, paint another coat on while spreading it into the are you had masked off by an inch or two, let that dry off. quick going over with 1500 or something to get the brush strokes out, then quickly move up to a finer and finer paper keeping it good and wet. then a good scrub with a polish. it's all trial and error and i'm not pro.

Seems to match the top part of the car quite well, actually. The bottom thing just looks brighter than the rest of it.

    only joking :)

the paint doesn't actually look too bad, i think it's the filling that needs attention more than anything. whip that mud flap off, cake that area in filler and sand it beck to a nice shape. with filling you aren't trying to build it up to a nice shape, you bring the filler up proud of the damage and then sand it back, rinse, repeat, several times. then maybe consider painting the whole valance, might be a good shout.

In that pic, your spray job matches your car better than the rest of the bumper!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,473 ✭✭✭YbFocus

The paint would match pretty ok with work, it's the sanding on the filling that let you down here.

That needs to be super smooth and shaped correctly or the paint will always look off, even in the right shade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,127 ✭✭✭job seeker

Ya the filler does look dodge all right.. I must try and find a diagram of the bumper and where screws/clips are and take it off..working now until next Wednesday so I suppose its a job for next week.. Id be afraid of taking off the bumper and not been able to get it back on..

iirc, if you remove the two little plastic arch liner type things at the back of the rear wheel arches, the rest of that valance is just clip on.

    what filler were you using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭GvidoR

Here's how you use filler. :P

What's wrong with that job is the fillers, not blending it enough and not giving it a proper sealant to give it depth. It looks quite dull, a few coats of lacquer would make it more "realistic". You want to pile the fillers back on that, buy a cork sanding block, 100 grit, perhaps a 150 grit also of sandpaper and ate chunks out of it until you bring it right back to the plastic, only covering just what you need to. You should be able to close your eyes, rub your fingers across the fillers and not be able to tell where you've filled.

With regards to masking, I did the same thing initially when i was doing something similar on the focus, all it did was leave harsh transition lines which stood out. I took the tape off, and blended the old to the new, so the transition was gradual. This is far far easier to do with a rattle can, brushing must be a pain.

Would halfords not mix up the paint colour in a rattle can for you?

Anyway, there are a few pointers, I'm no expert btw, just learned from doing things myself.

David's isopon, p38 easy sand.. And p130 grit sandpaper.. Easy sand my arse.

    Edit. Sandpaper not sandwich

Good tips, Halfords hadn't the gold at all.. All they had was broom yellow for punto.
