I don't generally feel very "girlie" but this thread is making me feel high maintenance.

I get my eyebrows waxed once a month or so, I wear light makeup to work every day (SPF 25 foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, blush and lipstick) and I wear heels occasionally, but not if I will be walking a lot that day. My hair is short and curly, so I just scrunch and go each morning after a shower.

I never wear fake tan, I am very pale and am happier to stay pale than try to fight with tanning cream.

That being said, I wear slacks/jeans almost every day. I think I have worn a skirt or a dress 7 times in the past 12 months.

Feeling a bit high-maintenance myself now, and I wouldn't consider myself such at all.
Do my own eyebrows, have always done, & dye my own hair (roots every three/four weeks )
Wear makeup every day, unless I'm not leaving the house, but a fairly natural, non-caked look.
Use a gradual tan during the Summer once a week
Wear heels most of the time at work & always on a night out.

Ladies when ye say "oh this thread is making me feel a bit high-maintenance", what do ye mean? I mean, Kim Kardashian is high maintenance. Anyone below that has a pretty normal routine IMO.

I think there have just been a fair few posts stating that they avoid any make up, heels, etc unless there is a wedding.

I agree that that Kim Kardashian is VERY high maintenance, but contrasted to someone who never wears makeup, does nails or wear heels, I feel like I am closer to her on that scale.

Compared to my mother, I am very low maintenance, so I guess it is just surprising to me.

I'm surprised how many have said they don't wear makeup, tan or heels regularly as I'm always one of very few, if not the only one, when I'm out. I work with around 60 women and there's only four or five of us who don't wear makeup. Most also wear heels. I'm usually the only person without makeup on a night out and one of very few in flats. I do think tan is becoming less prevalent these days though.

I get gel polish on my nails every two weeks, otherwise I'd bite my nails. I never wear stiletto heels, will wear wedges or block heels if I need height. I've never used fake tan- think it looks ridiculous. I don't usually wear make up on a daily basis, but I'm thinking of starting to do so.

I pluck my eyebrows. But I've overplucked over the years and they look a disaster!

I used to also wear high heels and the odd time wear fake tan but now not so much. I will tend to wear jeans on nights out and boots because I find the more comfy. I rarely wear make-up either. I usually have none on at all. I never wear it to work. Only really when I'm going out and most times now it's just foundation and some mascara!

I might wear mascara and tinted moisturiser for a very special night out like my birthday, but never ever wear fake tan. I wear heels about twice a year, and only trim the odd hair from my eyebrows.
I also stopped colouring the grey out of my hair about two years ago (aged 39 then), and found it incredibly liberating after a few weeks of feeling vulnerable about it. I'd never go back now!
Overall, I'm really happy with the way I look, after the usual agonies of the teens and twenties when I never seemed to feel this. My thirties were fantastic for enabling me to reach the point where I love my body and what it has done for me, and actually find the aging process quite interesting and exciting.

What a lovely refreshing post :)

I love to hear women speaking positively about ageing. The message we're sold is so different. So vastly different to my experience of it thus far at least.

Ageing for me at this point at the age of 30 has been amusing, entertaining, enlightening and sort of life-affirming. Laughter lines and crows feet and sporadic silver strands et al. And the body confidence is epic, after years of being crushed by my own insecurities. You sort of reach the stage where you've got this newfound respect for what your body actually does and how it bounces back, the health and balance it tries to maintain versus whether or not you fit into your skinny jeans. That for me has only come with time and experience.

You put it much better than me! I know what you mean when you say aging is life-affirming - if you just open yourself up to it a little bit, and don't hide from it at every step. And it generally is fascinating to feel and see what is happening to my body over time - in my twenties I was probably always worried about whether I was attractive, and didn't really look at my body in any other way much.

I don't pluck my eyebrows because I'm a massive scaredy cat. I do get them waxed and threaded every few months though.

NEVER wear fake tan. My skin is incompatible and I hate the look, feel and smell of it.

I don't wear heels because I'm not willing to be in discomfort or slowed down by my footwear.

I'm also very unadventurous when it comes to eyebrows. A couple of my friends do that cartoon eyebrow look and I find it hilarious. They love it though so that's the main thing.

I look more polished when I use tinted moisturiser and mascara but I'm rarely bothered to slap it on!

I can't say I am overly enthusiastic about ageing. Not bother by it to have work done but it is pain to dye hair more often, I could do with a laughter line or two less. Also despite being roughly the same weight for 20 years (excluding pregnancies) there seems to be more flesh around my waist. :D so cropped tops and hot pants are out at 37. :D

I find you have to be more careful about what make up you apply as you get older, some eye shadows that were fun in youth now sit in age creases (ok, ok, wrinkles) and look dreadful. Same for concealers and powders (I dont wear foundation so maybe its the same).

Dying my hair - Ive still only got about 10 grey hairs so its not something that has been affected yet, Ive been using semi permanent dyes since my teenage years and continue to now, but if I am delayed on a dye session there isnt a stark contrast at all still thankfully.

Dont get me started on weight and metabolism. I eat about 1/3 what my husband eats and he is stick thin while I am constantly struggling! These days Im soooo slow to lose weight, I used to be able to just cut junk and itd fall off me.

Ankles and feet though? Puffy looking in sandals if Im hot now - whats that all about???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭chuckles30

I wear heels quiet a lot...but not if I know I'm going to be standing a lot. Going shopping or something like that, it's definitely flats and comfort.

Make up - only for special nights out.

Fake tan - have done occasionally for weddings. Honestly don't think I'd bother at this stage.

Plucking eyebrows - only the odd stray long one

Hair Dye - never have and don't intend to. The odd grey hair starting to appear now (40 later this year), but it doesn't bother me. I couldn't be bothered with the hassle and expense of hair dye

I have that problem. One of the reasons could be excessive weight but I am normal on bmi scale and sometimes my feet balloon so badly I can only wear flip flops. It started happening in my twenties during very hot (30 deg+) and humid summer. I was advised to rest my legs up. Anyway I avoid strappy sandals and in general I find it helps if I am wearing tights. But most importantly no plastic shoes - leather or canvas upper and leather inside.

Ugh my feet swell as well. Only started happening in my late 20s (I'm almost 30 now). It happens when I put them under pressure - long days in heels, loads of walking/standing in heat etc.

However, I find my lower legs almost constantly swollen to a greater or lesser degree. V annoying.

Quite surprised there are so many ladies here who are relatively low maintenance as I'm quite alone in that regard in my group of friends and am not into magazines and celebrity gossip etc so figured I was the black sheep!

Guilty of all. Fake nails and lashes the lot. Love my heels.

Being into magazines and celebrity gossip has nothing to do with it. I absolutely despise tabloids, I even bring my own book to hairdressers or browse the net to avoid them but I still love high heels and wear make up almost daily. I might not be arsed to spend too much time on it but that doesn't mean I could last without foundation more than a day or two. Seriously you wouldn't want to follow gossip magazines for style advice anyway unless you want to look like something that just escaped out of The only way is Essex.

Yeah feck the magazines, I have yet to pick up one 'women's magazine' that doesn't try to make me feel bad for having a vagina. "How to lose that baby weight in less than a month!" "How to make sure you're pleasing your man!"

Getting "dolled up" as my mother would say is one million percent motivated by my own self-image and my own feelings. At the age of 30 now I know myself pretty well to know that if I wear something that isn't my style or doesn't fit right I'll be pulling at my clothes and taking trips to the ladies to adjust myself at every opportunity and the discomfort of it all will just ruin my day. Same with makeup or hair or eyebrows etc.

I like to look a certain way. I think I'm attractive that way. I think I'm making the most of my features and presenting myself the way I'd like to be presented to the world.

And sometimes I could give two shytes. I'm currently in a pair of yoga pants with an oversized t-shirt, hair in a messy bun and not a lick of makeup on my face. Went to the supermarket, gym and lunch with the OH like this, happy days. I could do this for a week or two if I didn't have much going on, but for work, drinks with friends, nights out, meetings, social occasions etc, I'll spend a lot more time on myself. Because it makes me feel deadly. And that's about it.

I could go on a night out and not bother putting on makeup at all (I never wear it at any other time) even though I have all the best stuff. (MAC, Elizabeth Arden, rimmel ect..) I'm just not the makeup type of girl, and it wouldn't bother me being pale faced in photos. And if I DO wear makeup it tends to be 20x darker than my actual skin tone. I'm fair  and to this day I still love dark makeup (even though I don't wear it) I just like to keep it for special occasions :D

I am so glad you said this. I do pluck my brows and wear heels sometimes. I don't wear fake tan but that's more because I have yet to find one that works on me. But I love make up. And nails and things.

It's low self esteem that stops me from using it more. I think you can use make up to do a natural look.

I love watching youtube tutorials. I wouldn't do it everyday though.

Sometimes pale skin can be striking though.

Secretly I want to be a blonde version of daphne guinness. If anything more self confidence would encourage me to experiment with make up.

I like that you can do different things and look totally different.

I'm naturally quite sallow and don't wear fake tan because I hate how it feels on me.

I LOVE makeup and buy lots of it but only wear the full face look at the weekend and on a special occasion. Watching CBeebies with my little ones doesn't call for much more than a bit of eyeliner and lipgloss :)

I pluck my eyebrows once a week because they are out of control otherwise. I also tint them myself.

I love heels and would wear them everyday if I wasn't 5 foot 8. As another poster said it makes you feel like the bfg. But flats look awful when your dressed up to go out so once in a while I brave it. It's flats 99% of the time for me.

I haven't shaved my legs in weeks. Its odd but nothing grows for about two weeks and then all of a sudden I am like a yeti.

I bleach them first and then tint them a nicer brown. I use boots facial bleach and leave on for 4 or 5 minutes and sometimes the colour is nice so I leave them but if they are too light I use refecotil tint it's very easy to use.

I pluck my eyebrows (or get the threaded) because otherwise I have a total monobrow. I'd like to wear heels but they kill my feet. I've gone through phases of buying them thinking I'd get used to them, but I never do and they just sit in my room. I wear them to weddings, but am in agony after half an hour, so always end up slipping on flats. Never worn fake tan...don't need to as I'm fairly sallow anyway, but I think it looks horrible. I think the pale-skinned Irish look is lovely and I don't know why anyone would want to trowel on layers of fake tan.

I'm gonna try that! The bleach bit....this ....could...go so horribly horribly wrong.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for press on nails? MattieRoberts on youtube uses them and has amazing nails but she is in the states.
