Girls, how many of you pluck your eyebrows/wear heels/fake tan?

I was just curious. I'm a regular coveter of all the above (religiously get my eyebrows waxed and plucked as it gives them a lovely shape.) I also wear fake tan if I'm going on a night out - it makes me feels better about myself and I think it looks nicer than pale (mind you, I know some people can pull off the pale look and look lovely.) Heels are a no brainer for me too. Usually 4 inches, on some occasions 3 inches (only because I have a size 2 foot and finding high heels are a pain!)

However I was once randomly in a conversation with a girl that has never ever touched her eyebrows (luckily a nice shape already so no real need to!) or wears fake tan. She told me it does look rather odd when she's in a group being the only pale girl so there's a real contrast in the photos. She said she looks ghostly in comparison but doesn't mind. She told me she wears tights whenever she's on a night out so baring the legs aren't an issue. She said she likes to buy the palest foundation and hates blusher/bronzer. She also said she wasn't a major fan of heels and wears tiny heels.

Do you know many women like the girl I met? Or are you like the girl I referred to? Personally, I was v jealous of her confidence! The thought of having unkempt eyebrows (in my case!) and being really pale in photos in photos fills me with dread, couldn't pull it off at all. Even though I'm naturally fair, so many people think I've got a natural tan from the sun :p Though I wouldn't say I have low self esteem, doing all the above makes me feel more confident and happier within myself. But that's just me.

So.. fellow LL's, are you a fan of getting your brows done, wearing high heels and fake tan..or do you prefer the au natural look? It would have the former for me anyways. Looking forward to seeing the replies :)

I have very low self esteem but I don't do any of that.

Never plucked or waxed my eyebrows, never had any need, as far as I know.

Don't wear fake tan, because of the effort and I'm ok with being alabaster. I do think I glow with ghostly whiteness in pictures but I just don't look at pictures of myself too much, and luckily not many people want to take pictures of me anyway.

I would like to be able to wear high heels but they absolutely kill my back and feet, so I mostly don't. I think flats just never look as good as heels, but no point putting myself through torture for that.

I do pluck eyebrows as needed - discreetly - always have. Well-shaped eyebrows do wonders for a face.
Don't need fake tan - have a pleasant glow of natural tan anyway.
And heels - I would, but can rarely get any to fit - very wide feet - they literally do not make fashion shoes in double-width!

TBH, I think that lipstick and a pair of earrings give you a "finish" that nothing else can.

I try keep my brows from getting straggly, but I rarely wear heels or makeup and I never wear fake tan. I think fake tan looks bad.

I get my eyebrows tinted and threaded. It is the only "grooming" thing I am committed to! I rarely wear make up, don't get my nails done, never wear heels and have worn fake tan three times in my life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

I just tweeze strays in my eyebrows but never wear fake tan. As for the high heels and makeup, well... Not my style, at all.

However, I do go every 4 weeks to my barber to get the exact same cut so I always have good hair. I can't leave the house without it being right. So it's just different strokes for different folks!

I fake tan all the time, its very addicting (its very easy to see how some ladies get addicted to tanning beds!) I do my eyebrows now and again but its so so painful to get them plucked or threaded or waxed because I have very thick, coarse eyebrows so I use hair removal cream. I always wear make up when leaving the house. I absolutely loathe being pale. I look very sick, I have blueish undertones so I look grey almost , if I didn't wear make up to school the teachers would urge me to go home. I dread the day a man will have to wake up to me the next day with no slap on or patchy tan. :( it is fun to apply though and one of the benefits of being a girl is getting done up :)

Ladies who do NOT conform to the ritual of fake tan, short dresses/shorts up to their ass, buzzums out and all that are the ones the men go for.

The rest are all so tarty that it's hard to take them seriously. They are in a uniform.

Be unique ladies, and I am a gurrl.

And let's be honest it is all done for man hunting isn't it? But if you look the same or more outrageous than the next girl, the poor dude will be terrified. Sometimes...

OP the girl you're describing sounds an awful lot like me :pac: I never touched my eyebrows and was told by a beautician before not to!! Apparently they're perfect and they shape my face really well. Never really bothered me to go near them anyway :pac:

I wear the palest foundation I can find and if I am wearing skirts or dresses I tend to wear dark tights with them. ( I know I sound like a goth, I probably am, I am just in denial :pac: ) Not a fan of heels only because I can't wear them (feet are ruined from work boots). I don't wear fake tan at all, I'd look ridiculous!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭DM addict

I don't do anything to my eyebrows, never worn fake tan, wear heels incredibly rarely (I think I own one pair, maybe two?), don't wear make up regularly, just on special occasions. Also don't shave my legs or wear tights.

It seems like a lot of hassle to me, and I've never really been interested. I'm pretty confident in how I look.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,344 ✭✭✭Diamond Doll

Getting my eyebrows done regularly (every 3-4 weeks) is pretty much a necessity for me. They're very dark and have a nice natural shape, however the strays grow back ridiculously fast. I prefer not to touch them myself in between as it's really noticeable if I over-pluck. :o

I wear make-up almost every day. I'd be happy enough to go to the shops without make-up, but would never go into work or meet up with friends etc barefaced. Having said that it's very basic, a five-minute job for me, and that doesn't differ a lot whether I'm going into work or going out.

I rarely bother doing my nails, and never use fake tan. I'd probably look better with a bit of a tan, but I'm just not arsed, not even for big occasions.

I mostly only wear heels when I'm going out. I keep meaning to make an effort to wear them more often though, and to improve my wardrobe in general.

Oh and I get my hair done (cut and coloured) maybe every second month.

I never wear fake tan, I think pale looks better than bad fake tan, which seems to be the case with the majority of girls I've seen wearing it.....

Was getting my makeup done for an event the other week and had to very clear when the girl said she would "bronze me up." I said no, I'd rather my face be the same colour as my arms and she was shocked I wouldn't be putting on tan. But hers was very splotchy and uneven :pac:

I wear what I think is a normal amount of makeup, some but not too much! I get my eyebrows waxed to keep them tidy. Again girls always shocked I don't want them tinted every time also. Got it done once and looked strange with my blonde hair!

It's for sure not a confidence thing for me to not do too much grooming, more that I just couldn't be bothered to spend the time and money. Getting ready for nights out I much prefer relaxing and chatting and drinking than all that fuss of tan and hair extensions and loads of makeup. It's just not me either, I would feel very insecure out of my comfort zone, much like I'm sure some girls would feel to take it all off!

I do my eyebrows. Wear makeup half the time, sometimes cba.
I think hair is the most effort since i dye it frequently enough. And a regular cut, even if i end up tying it back all the time anyway
And trying to find nice clothes, though it so much effort

Eyebrows are kept waxed and shaped - I knock maybe 6 weeks out of it.

I rarely wear make up, to be honest it's because I'm too lazy! The most I'd do on any given day is some mascara and to fill in my eyebrows. Well shaped/defined brows work wonders for a gal! I'm not opposed to wearing make up though, I'm just far too lazy to apply the whole face every day.

Tan is applied less frequently than rarely. Wore it for the first time in over a year 3 weeks ago because I was going to a wedding and I looked sickly pale. Girls in make up shop were astounded that I was even wearing any as I made sure to keep it light. Again; I find tan too much of an effort for the length of time it lasts etc. HAve had it applied professionally for shows and loved the results but hated when it began to patch/fade unevenly after a week or so!

I had quite thick (and nicely shaped) eyebrows in my youth but those were the days when it was fashionable to have a thin line so a decade of over plucking later and now I just have quite thin eyebrows, so I pluck strays still but usually draw on heavier brows when going out.

Fake tan, I have worn it from time to time but I absolutely hate how it feels so its rare for me to wear it. Last Saturday I wore some just on my arms and upper body but I looked ridiculous in the photos compared to how white (and normal) other people were! Its a bit of as generational thing though, some younger ladies like to be tangoed to the max, whereas it wasnt even around when I was young so its never been a regular part of my grooming!

Heels - never. Never been into them. I will occasionally wear a block heeled boot in winter or maybe a flatform type sandal in summer but generally speaking its flats all the way for me. If I go to a wedding I wear a low heeled court shoe and switch to flats later in the evening.

I look after my own nails, I dont like how fake nails look, the thickness of them and how they look on the underside of the nail grosses me out. But I keep my own nice and I shape them and wear nail varnish going out etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 666 ✭✭✭DeltaWhite

I do my brows religiously, I've never actually got them waxed or threaded. Just prefer to do them myself!

Cannot stand fake tan. It looks rank unless it's been put on correctly. The amount of girls I see who just look like they haven't showered because they're crap at putting on tan or else using a crap tan!

I'm 5ft10 so I am like the BFG with heels on. Hate wearing them, but usually feel like I have to because they kind of make a going out outfit look nicer than flats. But everyday I wear flats.

The rest are all so tarty that it's hard to take them seriously. They are in a uniform.

Haven't heard 'tarty' as a put down in a long time. Nice.

Don't do heels (can't walk in them, think they're pretty on people who can) or fake tan (hate the smell, hate how it looks on me, don't have the patience for it). Happy to be pale :) Eyebrows I shape or get threaded and fill in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

    None of the above :)

I spend my days running around after a small child so heels are not practical. I hate the fake tan look and I'm quite happy with my natural colouring as it is. I don't wear makeup every day because I don't have the time/money/inclination to do so. I do take care of my eyebrows, I don't style them, I just keep them neat and tidy which takes 5-10 mins a week max.

I do make an effort when its a night out or a special occassion and I enjoy it but equally I'm happy to go out casual. I guess I'm lucky that I feel confident in myself as I am without the need to do any enhancements. I think I look better without all that stuff anyway. The only thing I do religiously is wear sun cream every single day.

Its probably true for some women that its all about the men but I really hate that assumption that a woman looking good has to be doing it to get attention. Maybe she just likes to feel good about herself. I'm in a long term relationship, I have zero interest in looking good for men. I love the buzz of getting ready for a night out, the night for me starts when I come out of the shower, have my music on, a glass of wine beside me and I'm getting ready and anticipating what the night holds. Its nice to look good, its nice to feel good. Nothing at all to do with men.

I would love to be tanned, for once in my life. I have tried the fake tan. And it always went streaky and i looked ridiculous. So I have given up on it.

I do my eyebrows. And I wear heels every now and then. I do like nice shoes.

I cant do proper heels either and while I do admire some heels I really hate when I see someone struggling to walk in heels - it just looks awful and it doesnt matter how well the person is groomed otherwise, it looks unattractive.

I always say that I feel like Godzilla with heels on :D I do actually like the look of heels and how they elongate the legs, but I don't really need them because I am tall so I only wear them occasionally.

I have never plucked my eyebrows, but they don't need it as I'm quite fair. I have a friend who is very blunt and she has vowed to tell me if I ever start needing to pluck them.

I don't do fake tan either, it sounds like a lot of effort for not much gain and I have no problem being pale. I wear quite a pale foundation because I have a fear of being orange. Having said that, I do like when I get a bit of colour from the sun.

I love shoes, but if I walk like a duck or a geisha in them, then they stay in the shop. Well actually no, I usually succumb to buying them but they stay untouched in the box at the bottom of my wardrobe where they are routinely tried on with an outfit and regretfully discarded in favour of a pair I can walk in.

A woman who cant walk normally in the heels that she is wearing stands out for all the wrong reasons IMO. I'll remember how uncomfortable she looked long after I've forgotten what she was wearing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

    None of the above.

My eyebrows are very faint, so on a work day my morning routine it to colour them in, put on a miniscule amount of very pale foundation on my cheeks as my skin can sometimes look a bit red there, and put on a bit of mascara.
For an evening out, I might add a touch of grey eyeshadow, but that's really it.

I had never come across the concept of fake tan until I moved to Ireland, I had never even heard of it before. I've given it exactly one try - I had a bit of a tan, but with a tan lines around my arms and neck, so I thought I'd try and even it out. It looked ridiculous, and the smell was just undescribably bad. So now I just live with the tan lines in summer.

I don't own any high heels. I usually prefer medium heels, enough to give you a little lift, but still comfortable and not bad for your feet or back.

I suspect I might just be a very boring person.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 Crazy_Fool

Heels are the devil.....so much pain!! Not being able to walk in shoes properly makes me feel uncomfortable and really self conscious, so I just avoid it. I am getting married next year and intend on having comfy low shoes under my dress, sur nobody will see anyway :D

I used to use fake tan years ago when I first went to college, I don't bother now. It never looked right and to be honest I can't be bothered with the effort. I do my own eyebrows, they're fairly easy to manage with a tweezers and an eyebrow pencil.

Getting nails done is a no-no, the main reason being that I'm a nurse and we're not allowed; although I probably wouldn't bother anyway.

I rarely pluck my eyebrows, I prefer to get them threaded. They are failry light around the edges so it's not a huge necessity, I can get away with plucking if I'm stuck.

I wear low heels going out sometimes, I own 1 pair of "high" heels and they only work cos they have a block heel. Forget about me walking very far in them though. If I can't walk propery in shoes or know I wouldn;t get through a night in them I am unlikely to buy them. Or I'll have my saving pair of flats in the bag for my poor feet :D

Tan - no. I'm pale but I've never gone down the tanning route. In saying that, I just bought some tinted moisturiser for my legs earlier to test out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

I don't like the overplucke look of eyebrow so except getting rid of some stray hairs I leave them alone. Similarly I dislike overbaked look so I stay well away from fake tan. I am not overly pale anyway.

I do wear high heels a lot and I am very particular about shoes. I try to pick comfortable ones, the soles can't be too thin. I make sure to stick to natural materials because plastic or a lot of straps equals sore feet for me. I can walk in fairly high heels without much hassle so I would be wearing them almost daily.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭Links234

I'll pluck my eyebrows every so often, but never wear fake tan, ever. Pale and proud! :D

I do wear heels sometimes, but they're Doc Martens heels and quite chunky, so they're pretty damn comfy. I'll never wear stilletos or anything like that, not my style at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭miezekatze

I've never worn fake tan, always found it weird looking and impractical. Where I'm from fake tan wouldn't be as common as it is in Ireland and probably more like a stripper/bodybuilder thing so I still find it a bit odd when 'normal' people use it.

I very rarely wear heels and hate them!

I pluck my eyebrows myself as I have a bit of a monobrow if I don't. Might get it done professionally sometime.

I was that girl 2-3 years ago! But in the past couple of years I have started getting my brows done. They are very fair, so I get them tinted and shaped once a month. I do prefer the way they look. Never get them tinted too dark though, that would look silly.

I wear fake tan a couple of times a year. Hate the stuff though, always looks streaky on me. Next time I have an occasion/whatever I probably won't wear it.

Don't own a single pair of heels. They hurt and I am tall enough!

Don't wear fake tan (I'm not pale skinned anyway), wear minimal makeup, pluck out a few strays every few weeks. I'm very small so I do own heels, but wouldn't wear higher than 2.5 inch or 3 max going out if I wear them at all, and only wear them sometimes at work if I've to dress formally in a suit. I don't mess with my hair either. I'm not a stunning beauty, but I'm happy with how I scrub up without all the palaver. I simply don't care if I look pale or not in photos, I detest fake tan.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,962 ✭✭✭r93kaey5p2izun

I get my eyebrows threaded once a month and put powder in them daily. I also wear mascara every day. I don't wear any other makeup. I got tan done in a salon twice in my teens but would never bother now. I would only consider heels for a wedding or similar event, the same with proper makeup. But I have gone bare faced to all recent major events and was much happier. Again, I wore full makeup and heels for all nights out in my teens but not in the last ten years.

I have my hair cut and coloured every 8 weeks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭MrWalsh

What do you mean by eyebrow powder Arlessienne? I use an eyebrow pencil but my knowledge of such matters stops there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,962 ✭✭✭r93kaey5p2izun

I use the Sleek brow kit. It contains tinted wax and powder to enhance your brows. I usually just use the powder to fill them in a little. You're supposed to use the wax first to fill in and shape and then set with the powder. I use it properly if I want a more defined look. There's several brow kits like this on the market. I find it more natural looking than pencil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

I get my eyebrows threaded or waxed but I never wear fake tan or high heels. I live in a warm climate so I have a decent natural tan from swimming outside everyday and just generally going about day to day life but even when I'm paler, I don't like fake tan so don't use it. I don't wear high heels anymore because I simply cannot walk in them.

I don't like the judgement on women who do fake tan though - that 'tarty' comment for instance or saying that they can't be taken seriously? I think that's utterly ridiculous.

I usually pluck my eyebrows myself as I prefer the shape I give them. Once or twice a year I'll get them threaded, mainly to get those little blondy hairs that build up that I can't see myself.

If I'm going out out I'll wear a really light fake tan. Only if I'm wearing a dress and heels though. Even when I wear it I'm still paler than most people who aren't wearing tan. I'm almost see through I'm so pale! I use it to even my skin tone rather than tan it. Must try and MAC Face and Body thing in a lighter colour.

I don't get my hair cut that often as I've yet to have a cut I'm actually happy with. They always style it so it's completely flat to my head. I got it styled curly once and the roots were flat and the ends were all poufey.

I enjoy wearing make up at weekends or nights out. For work I'll wear proper make up some days, other days it's just mascara.

Well the overly plucked brow used to be fashionable. We didn't have Cara back in the day.

I see that ratified mentions Embrowdery, anyone tried it?

I think the Groucho Marx eyebrow trend of today will be responsible for many epic cringes in ten years.

I've seen some good ones, but I've seen even more ridiculous ones. Mostly they're so unnatural looking they're cartoonish.

Great to read all the replies, thanks everyone! :D Just wondering, what's ye're opinion on the hd brows? I was considering getting them done, but really I'm quite happy with the way my brows are at the moment. They're a nice shape and look good once tinted and waxed/plucked. So idk if the HD Brows would be worth it or not

I recently went for an eyebrow wax and, at first glance, the girl asked me if I'd gotten HD brows done, LOL! Mine are very dark and defined, and according to her they've a great shape that few people have naturally.

Personally I'd much prefer to have lighter, less "dramatic" eyebrows, as it really limits what colour I can dye my hair (it looks a bit ridiculous if I go too light.)

Tried this today. I went for Dark as I'm a dark red head and thought Light would be too light. I like it, the powder does give a nice effect, bit too much with the wax though (I might just need practice applying).

It's a pity there isn't a reddish shade between Light and Dark, as it's darker than I'd normally go with pencil but perhaps I'm just adjusting.

I tweeze stray brow hairs but don't go mad. My brow shape is fine as it is.

I don't wear fake tan as it doesn't suit me. For my wedding I used one of those gradual self-tanners for about a week in advance so I wouldn't have the flash bouncing off me :pac: It was very subtle so it was okay.

I never wear heels. I just don't want to wear shoes that hurt my feet. I'm incredibly unfashionable, though. I wear crocs outside where other people can see!

I only wear makeup to weddings. I used to wear it every time I went out but I'm just not bothered any more.

I'm 28 and only started having my eyebrows done about 3 years ago and in that time I have probably had them waxed 5 times. I gave up on having them waxed about 6 months ago and since then have just tended to them with a tweezers but that is just to keep them tidy. They're quite full but not to be trendy, just trying to keep them natural so they don't require as much maintenance.

I used to wear high heels everyday and to be honest I still would if I could. I suffer from lymphedema in one of my legs so high heels are just not an option anymore. I do wear wedges quite regularly though as a small heel is better for my physical condition and it's better for your posture and back.

Definitely no fake tan for me, I've never worn it and I would look really really stupid with it on me. I am like your friend, my foundation is the palest shade I can find so that it actually matches my skin tone so I'd look pretty stupid with a fake tan body and a pale head :pac:

The one thing I would be quite dedicated to is my hair. I used to have really long hair and got it cut up into a pixie cut about 2 years ago, since then I have taken really good care of my hair, high quality products, styled properly, treatments etc. I try to get it cut every 6 weeks (I hate when it starts growing out at the nape of my neck, it makes me feel like a hedgehog) and get my highlights done very 3 months or so (my hair holds the colour for a long time).

I don't wear make up everyday but I'm lucky with my skin, it's quite good, not perfect but I'm happy to go without make up. When I do wear make up, unless it's for a big night out, it tends to be quite relaxed, nothing too dramatic. I do love bright lips and unusual colours on my lips.

Like others, I do all of this for myself.
I'm sure I'm not alone in loving a pamper night at home. Long shower/bath, face mask, hair mask, hair removal, all your lotions and potions, burn a yummy candle, paint your nails, dry your hair and style it afterwards. I just love that feeling of "done" at the end. I love admiring my nails when I've done a really good job painting them. I also love having a little make up practice session at home, trying out some new technique I've seen online or some new product I've bought. I'm certainly not doing that for anyone else and my husband always looks at me like I'm mad when I do it :pac:

Tried this today. I went for Dark as I'm a dark red head and thought Light would be too light. I like it, the powder does give a nice effect, bit too much with the wax though (I might just need practice applying).

It's a pity there isn't a reddish shade between Light and Dark, as it's darker than I'd normally go with pencil but perhaps I'm just adjusting.

I'm a brunette but I use the Light. I think it's dark enough for me and would be way too dark for blondes. They need an even lighter shade I think.

What was recommended to me by a makeup artist to get a natural look was to use a cheap disposable mascara wand to brush against the the hair growth after applying the wax and/or powder, then brush back into place. I find this works really well.

Ah, perhaps I should've gone for Light, as my complexion is quite fair. I was afraid Light would be much too light. I'll check it out. I really like the mini tweezers, I've quite a large tweezers but I don't carry it round, it's handy to have a mini one!

Have never gone near my eyebrows, or worn make-up, or fake tan or high heels.
