Gloss black grills ordered for the E39, hopefully getting the gearbox sorted this week and engine next week and then to sort a wheel speed sensor, NCT after that.

A lot of work going in to it these days!

I didn't even know I had bought them, eBay kept notifying me saying I should pay for these things :pac:

There is a lot of work going into it and still a lot to do, full time in work now so have the funds to sort it, after the mechanical stuff it's onto new Wheels, Steering Wheel retrim, Bodywork repair and another round of machining, headlights are being taken out and given the full treatment and UV protection, new shift knob, flappy paddles, new boot, PDC, plates...

Browsing through pistonheads there looking at Ferrari F50 there's four for sale and two of them have less than 1,000 miles on them.

To me that's an awful waste of an amazing car to have it sitting there like an expensive ornament to show off.

I'm not say drive as a daily but christ put some miles on it and enjoy it for what it is

I could keep going :pac: Most of it is trivial to be fair, the only real things wrong with it are the leaks in the box and engine, so you know, the important bits :pac: should be easy fixes though.

Gvido's Punto must be still be going and on all four wheels if he hasn't been on here :)

I've been offered 1200e for the Honda, nearly tempted to take the write off and give it to him. Told him I'd need to have a wee think.
In other news I've narrowed down the choice of the replacement, it will be wither a 170 tdi Passat or a Legacy tourer diesel.
Both have pros and cons but most people seem to be saying that the Legacy is the better bet.
    Hate these choices :D

Get rid of the honda, don't hesitate.

A 170 brake horse power Pasta will be a very nice car

Funny enough my brain says the same while the wife wants to try and get more... women.

Yes they are supposed to be very quick, I think 380nm of torque and the Legacy has 350nm of torque. The Passat has more goodies (satnav) but the Legacy looks better and is about 1/1.5k cheaper.

Please don't tell me your thinking of buying a newer boxer legacy the ones which cause massive injector issues which cost upwards of 2k to fix. It will be a case of when the injectors fail as opposed to if Subaru won't cover them. Tbh I thought you'd be trying to buy something reliable the 170 Passat would be a far safer bet.

If it's a PD passat, they have equally large injector issues, heads cracking, and more.
    CR (2008+) ones are ok.

At least vw cover the injectors and I think he is buying post 2008. Most pre 2008, pd engines will of had there injectors done at this stage.

Tbh there won't be a single car out there that won't have issues. The question is more how the previous owner treated it.
You are far more likely to hear negative stories about a car than good. I heard about the potential injector issue and if they do fail then it's an engine out job.
I am trying to buy something reliable but as I said, there is no such thing as a 100% reliable car especially a diesel. There will always be something and I'm not deciding that the Legacy is what I want merely that it's a possibility

Budget won't stretch to a 08 min for a Passat without going down the loan route. The Subaru would be a 08.

....is there any car out there that doesn't have 'Known expensive issues' these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,871 ✭✭✭Foxhole Norman

So I think visually this is where my car is headed, but probably with Silver & Polished M Pars instead of black, alternatively, style 95's.

Grills on the way, will be getting US sidelights coded in too, sorting out the rack this week and the bike!

Will the bike rack be permanent?

I dont think so the more and more complex cars become the less reliable they are due to more components which obviously more parts mean probability wise more chance of failure. But I suppose people want more complex cars that are more efficient with more toys and gadgets as that's seen as progress in peoples eyes when ultimately your compromising it's most basic function which is getting you from a to b reliably.

Agree. I also think though that it also the way people are treating their cars which has a direct impact on having negative opinions when it comes to the 2nd hand market.
I.e. people buying a 1.6 diesel to do 15k a year just to save 5c at the pump will ultimately cause a number of issues which if they sell on will be left up to the new owner to sort out. DPF is something that comes to mind.
I'd much rather buy a high miler diesel for a higher price than a low miler car of the same year cause that will tell me that more than likely this car has been used in the city more than anything.
Both the Passat and Legacy I'm interested in have high kms so I feel more "secure" buying them. Also more probable that things that could have gone wrong will have already been sorted out.

I plan to go somewhere every week so I'd say so, I don't think the economy would bother me to be honest!

That is a great aggressive look FN, gun metal style 95's would look awesome!

Yeah I'm quite tip for tap with wheels at the moment, I keep seeing each of them and wanting both, will be a few months before I decide and purchase anyway so have time to dwell!

Just when you think you've seen it all. The owner must be mad for gold that light up Honda badge is just a whole new low.

Whatever your into I suppose I think it looks very tacky just my opinion though.
