Apologies as I am sure this has been noticed and asked about before. Just looking at Flightradar to identify a plane overhead, and having done that noticed that a British army plane is visible on the radar but it appears to be crisscrossing the border and sometimes flying into the republic.

Is this just a case of the positioning of the plane on the radar being slightly inaccurate? It was active around Crossmaglen and flying at around 3,000 feet.

    Thanks

Without having to trawl through Google, does anyone know what the refuelling procedure is in regards to TCAS and collision avoidance? As refuelling is a visual manoeuvre will the aircraft being refueled have its transponder turned off?

Ie. Will they both show up on FR24?

Exercise Joint Warrior, big NATO all-arms exercise. I think this is the tenth day of this round, takes place a couple of times per year.

Re: AAR, procedure is that receivers Mode-S is turned off and they use TACAN for the join-up. So you won't see the receiver actually hooking-up on Planeplotter or whatever. However when the CV-22s are practising low-level dry hook-ups they often show up near their tanker.

Cool. The aerial refueller has its own VOR type transmitter onboard for the guys to track to. Makes sense.

Most military do not have the ADS configuration that would allow for a proper and reliable plot. And if they did, FR24 blocks 95% of them - wheter they are full ADS or not, along with most bizjets being blocked.

I'm not sure why the odd military slips thru their filters.

I've observed plenty of refuellers over the top over the years with an MLAT plot, but have never seen a refuel in progress online. I would assume they refuel locally out over the Atlantic or even the North sea. Well out of range of any FR24 or other feeders.

Does it make sense that they broadcast their position? I always thought that they were controlled by AWACS or had predetermined fuelling locations. Once close to the aircraft I believe that they have the equivalent of lead in lights.

Of course it does. They have TACAN on aircraft carriers too! They use UHF for comms. I'll take a wild guess and say they are using frequency hopsets similar to the Sincgars Man-packs. No hopset no navigation.

    Bit of googling reveals:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_air_navigation_system

    Have a look under Drawbacks.

Had problems yesterday afternoon with flight details not showing on smart phone via 3 (or IKEA WiFi) , so the flight was being shown on the map, but no departure or destination information was coming up, it seems to be working correctly again today though

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

I host near Shannon. It took a few months to get going from the time I registered but it's fairy simple. You just have to provide them with lat/long coordinates and pictures of where the antenna will go basically. Antenna arrives in the post and you install, plug in and away it goes.

    Hi,

I live in an "interesting" place, I think, at 51.5N and 09 W approx, under the great circle from Europe to US tracks via 50N to 55N. Open site, no problem with siting antenna.

I have registered an interest but nothing, so far. Perhaps too obvious a spot?

Do you mind if I ask what sort of (nominal) bb speed you have and are you hardwired to your router?? I suspect my fixed wireless is a drawback.

Dreadful rural broadband. 3mb offpeak. Won't really matter what kind you have, the fr24 box uses a tiny amount of upload bandwidth only. The box must be connected via ethernet though to the router

Just spotted this British Army Air Corps, Britton-Norman Defender BTN2, out of Brize Norton, doing circuits of Cardiff.
The photo shows some "very interesting bulges and antennae".

A bit of action around Brize Norton at the moment, with 2 x C130's operating at low altitude.
