Opinions: I've rented a car from Thrifty for a week at the end of January. They say the car costs 30e for the week (diesel compact) so with all other taxes it's around 60e.
I've gone through their terms and conditions and it seems like I can only have 0 excess if I, apart from purchasing full insurance, pay for the theft and LDW costs as well which is then pushing the car to upwards of 400e.
Seems quite an excessive amount or is this normal? Europcar charged me 280e for a week, diesel car and full insurance.

    Sill question.

Can someone else take my car for an NCT, or does it have to be me?

Went for a spin up to the Sally Gap, and then down towards Laragh. I don't usually go that route, I would usually turn right at the gap and go towards blessington. The road is absolute ****e for the first 10km at least I'd say, I was really crawling along, but the scenery out that direction is unbelievable. You'd swear you were in another country with how wild and breathtaking the scenery is. But then, after those terrible sections of road, it opens up and you can let rip. It was fantastic. It's been too long since I got to push the e46 a bit! Drives like that remind me why I pay so much tax!

Took that route last weekend. Full of tourists, but Pretty.

Went the opposite direction in winter... from Blessington to the Gap, to dodge an accident on the N81

Puckered sphincter in fog and ice in a RWD.... with nothing but darkness beyond the tufts of frozen grass at the road edge.

Not many up there today thankfully, and they all had pulled off by the time they got to the gap, so it was perfect! I did see a couple stranded in an old 206 that was overheating, I offered to help but I didn't have anything with me to help them... hopefully they made it down!

Some horrendous dips in that road towards laragh alright. I'd say that road has claimed a few sumps looking at the marks on the road at those sections.

Yes, they can, they just need to have ID (driving licence or passport)

Taxi driver last night drove the entire way home in 2nd in his auto petrol car. His fuel costs must be enormous, the car was screaming for a gear the entire way home. The box was shifting between the first two gears and its a CVT gearbox so I guess they either work or they dont.

Could it be a tiptronic box that he kept in second? Either way, not so good :pac:

I got a letter from Clare Co Co saying that my parking fine was unpaid and the fine is now €60 from €40.

However the thing is I was in Cuba at the time (and can prove such). Do I have to state who was driving the car, or will simply stating I was out of the country be enough to end the matter?

I'd imagine they have a photo.

But is the onus on me to pay it regardless as the registered owner?

Will have to be paid, easiest way at this point is to get the €60 from the person responsible and make sure it's paid. I wouldn't risk putting the onus on someone else to pay it directly themselves as they might not do it and the next step then is a court appearance.

Did you receive the letter re the €40?

Well wear on the A5, that should ease the pain of the fine :D

I would have thought so, I know when I worked in a garage and courtesy cars got fines, we had to pay them regardless of who was driving.

Clare County Council is absolutely ruthless in this regard. Previous owner has been running a business for 5 years and fcuked off without paying rates or water? No problem! Hound the person that just opened there a week ago, stick the debt to him and pursue them to the ends of the earth. Why should parking fines be any different...
It's a great way of having outstanding debt paid. I believe they have plans in the future to stand in the square in Ennis and pull random people over and stick them with someone else's debt. Isn't it great running a government/local authority? You can change the rules and make them up as you go along. Sure you'd have to try it on, the worst thing that can happen is you get nothing.
    What a crazy country.

In fairness, I think this is the right way to go about things. Charges should attach to properties (or cars).

After a short time it becomes self policing, as a buyer will do due diligence before committing to a deal.

    What a great country.

    Well, Focus battery is scrap.

Started it a couple of times today to move it and on the third start it would barely turn over and eventually wouldn't at all.

Took the battery out, it's a 60 Ah unit. Apparently I need a 72 Ah battery for this 1.8 TDCI engine. No wonder I'm having problems...

Hooked it up to a charger now for overnight. It should do me until Monday morning :)

It's the worst thing you could possibly do in The Land of No Personal Responsibility, i.e. Ireland. Just skip off and let the avalanche of sh*t fall on the next guy's head.

    Disagree totally.

As I said, the more self policing regulations the better.

The "next guy" needs to know what he's getting in to.

You don't seem to give a flying f*ck about anyone once the mighty government gets their pound of flesh

If it goes to court and you get Judge Durcan, you could be deported or have your hands chopped off to make an example if you :)

Till the sh*t avalanche hits you. Then the will be howling and gnashing of teeth and why de gubbermint doesn't do something and much phoning of Joe and complaining down the pub.
What we love here is getting one over and doing the other guy and ourselves to be getting out of things, cutting corners and being the cute hoor. That is why any integrated, forward looking government projects that require authorities to work together are always an unmitigated disaster, because everyone just wants to look after their own little corner and feck the other guy.
It is why Ireland will never be Sweden, Switzerland, Norway , we will always be a tier 2 country in Europe. The Dellboy of Europe.

After that incoherent rant, I'm out.

Put some reasoned arguments forward and I'll engage all day.
