Someone from Nissan was on Today FM talking about Nissan Leaf and electric cars in general. He said that the batteries last 10 years which is on average the same life time of an engine. :pac:

You'd be surprised how many car salesmen know nothing about cars, it's just a stepping stone sales job for them.

There's some amount alright throw any kind of technical question at some and it goes completely over there head which doesn't look good at all. I mean I thought one of the first rules of sales was to know your product. Sales in general is an area I'd hate although for car sales I would like being around the cars all the time that's probably the oy part is like.

But everyone in Ireland knows that any car will immediately turn into a lethal deathtrap upon turning 10 years old.

Infairness the way most Irish maintain their cars they are lethal by that stage alright. Obviously for everyone on here that minds cars it's not the case. A well minded 10 year old car can be almost as good as new.

Sales is great banter, I did contract phones on the weekend during college. Loved the human interaction and chasing the targets/ incentives.

99% of people you can talk into buying whatever you want once you have a basic knowledge of what you're selling and you have the gift of the gab.

Once they come into the shop, you own them, they are in the shop so they already have intent to buy, you just need to tell them what they need (or to gain trust, what they don't) and always have a deal sweetner at your disposal.

Then just close, close, close, always be closing :pac:

So. Two new rear brake discs and a new caliper, as well as pads. Also, I mightn't have the General back until Monday...

Turns out my new caliper arrived this morning, so the Gigahorse is back with Daddy, complete with shiny new bits. Yay! However, Daddy is €640 lighter. Booo-urns! :D

Ouch, that definitely puts a dent in the old warchest. But still, chocks away old boy and tally-ho, last one at the Horse and Hound is a wet blanket, what-hey?
Mine's a Stein of Überhausen Niederhofen Dunkelweizen Alt Paulaner Gamsbock Rauchbier!
Pint of Pimm's no doubt, old sport? :D:p

With a Guinness head. Ah you wouldn't know about England Herr Professor-Doktor - the blacksmith trotting up to bowl on the green of a balmy Summer's eve, the vicar waving his mickey out his second-floor window at the young ladies, bunches of feral travelling salesmen pukiing outside the Nag & Firkin, little children frolicking in the playgrounds while their parents compare tattoos and roar "Fackin' want some, caaant?!?" at each other. Maybe someday when all this madness is over we shall do battle, you and I, according to the Old Chivalry - Courvoisier be the neck, first one to collapse is a Nancy-Boy. Huzzah! :D

It has probably been asked loads of times before but I may aswell ask it again!

A friend is going looking at a '04 Vw Golf at the weekend and Im going with him. Cartell is saying its a 1.6 (petrol) Sport 102bhp model. Is there anything in particular he should be checking with it when he goes to view it? Or anything to be weary of with that particular engine?

biggest thing i'd be asking is what exactly he sees in/ why he wants that car?

there are so many more rewarding ways to spend what i'd assume is like €4k. what spec is it? and just make it clear that there is nothing "Sport" about 102bhp in 1350kgs :pac:... your 1.4 Corolla makes nearly the same power.

i'd be checking is it burning oil, has it got a service history, listening for any bushings gone, looking for uneven tyre wear, that all warning lights are coming on and going off again for a start.

Well effectively that's the old 1.6 engine non Fsi 5 speed so they are thirsty not as nice an engine as the new one and is non not to be then most reliable. The newer 1.6 Fsi engine in 6 speed is more reliable and economical came out mid 2006 I drove one the last time I was buying and liked it a lot I was still iffy as to whether it would be overall as reliable and it was 6.5 k euro 2006 one owner low mileage high spec but still it was too much money for what it was body wasn't perfect either.

Anyway as for your one above I personally wouldn't buy one with that older version engine. Chances are it's not that cheap sometimes I think if you have to drop back to 04 to afford a golf you'd be better of buying something newer and fresher for the same money. Now maybe that 04 golf will be a clean one but it's unlikely as most have the life driven out of them over the last 11 years.

That money was going to go towards getting the car done early next week.

There's a fella a few doors up trundling around in an old Micra belonging to the daughter and the thing sounds like the sump is full of cutlery. I can't stand it!! I think I might have to go out there and give him a kick... :D

Gearbox...check that properly. Listen for any whines, chattering in neutral.

The engines thirsty and a little boomy, goes alright for what it is though. Never had a reliability issues with that engine myself, just regular servicing and belt changes.
