No, they can't force you to use Vodafone. I even unlocked my Smart Ultra using a Vodafone NAC unlock code. Will be switching to Three in a month.

Yeah I thought that. It was just from what the woman was saying about the phones only working on vodafone. I nearly said back to her, "well that's not what boards says.."

I know a good bit about phone specs, but not much about phones themselves. So I sound like an absolute noob here:

I went into the vodafone shop asking about this phone saying it was for a friend (it was for me though). The woman there said the smart ultra 6 only works with vodafone SIM cards. I'm on 48 and don't want to change over. But reading over the comments in this thread, I want to know if the following are true:

I can buy the phone in the shop for 170 quid and
    1) take the vodafone sim they give me and throw it away
    2) get the unlock code from the link in the op
    3) put in my 48 nano sim when it arrives and set up internet etc. and it'll work grand like any other phone

There's no way they can lock in the vodafone sim card or force me to buy credit or anything, is there?

    1. Yes, some people didnt even get sims with it, they said they had one already.
    2.Yes
    3. Yes, Im not on 48 but it works for 3.

Most shop assistant don't know what they're talking about. Trust none of them :D ......seriously

In fairness she hardly gonna tell someone to get it unlocked :pac: technically* she is correct for the moment.....but get it unlocked and wave it in her face :D

Exactly. You don't have to be a slavish adherent to the corporate line to not want to encourage people to take their future topups elsewhere. Personally I always found the Vodafone staff in my local shop (Waterford) to be knowledgeable and helpful.

I got this phone yesterday and I am very happy .. most reviews say its negative that it seems plastic, but most people put cover on it anyway. It doesnt look that cheap to me.

I am surprised how light and thin it is .. amazing buy.

However, how do I change keyboard so I can swipe words? I had that on windows phone and miss it a lot .. can't find it anywhere in settings, any help ?

Download Google Keyboard, Swiftkey or Swype Keyboard from the Play store, and you can swipe away.

Go into Phone, tap the 3 dots in top right hand corner & select Settings then select Call settings then GSM call settings & then Additional settings

    Hey,

So, I managed to get a replacement from Vodafone... but now this phone just randomly crashes over and over the whole day. It cannot be used as the main phone because of that.

I made a video as a proof to show that the phone crashes.

The original video is 15 minutes long, but here's a clip where the phone crashed,

    https://vimeo.com/139514667

Does this happen to you guys?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭GvidoR

    Sorry to hear that CyberGhost.

It's a strange fault. I don't think anyone else has reported a problem like that on this thread. Mine has been very reliable and have no issues with it.

    Thanks GvidoR,

I have searched the web and haven't read this happening to anybody else either. The worst thing is that this crashes happen at random and I don't know a sure fire way of replicating them, after I posted this video, the phone crashed again.

EDIT: BTW, the phone has been reset and I set it up as new (rather than restore), and I installed maybe 4 applications from Google Playstore. So the phone is unmodified and clean.

Return it straight away. Show them the video.

One fault I have is the screen becomes unresponsive I'm unable to unlock it.

Happened at 7am Monday morning emails text messages appeared on the screen unable to view them .
Held power button etc nothing then out the blue at around 8.45am it reboots itself and I'm fine since on another Note yahoo mail does keep crashing on me .

Bit of a pain with not being able to remove a battery in this situation

Try holding the volume down and power buttons together to reboot.

honestly I too have had a couple of lockups on this phone, and you really have to hold the on/off button for a really really long time to shut the phone down in this situation , even longer than normal on other phones to shut them down. If you keep your finger on it for a long time it will eventually shut down or restart.

What I would have like to have seen on phones like this where you cannot remove the battery is a little pinhole at the back of the phone which can activate a electrical reset switch, between the battery and mainboard where you can stick a paperclip or the tool you use to insert the sim and SD card in the box just so you can easily reset the phone or cut off the poewer to the main board. I think on some china phones I have seen with this kind of feature on phones where you cannot remove the battery.

Mine seems to reboot itself once every two weeks or so. Weird lines come up on the screen and then it loads back to my lock screen and is fine again.

Worth returning/sending for repair? Not sure if it is. Only happens occasionally

Getting cold feet seems a few people are getting wonky phones. Saw this http://www.pixmania.ie/smartphones/motorola-moto-g-2nd-generation-8-gb-black-dual-sim-smartphone/22291731-a.html would it be near enough to the Ultra 6?

If you're going to get a Moto G, get 3rd generation one.

The one you linked has older version of Android, smaller and lower resolution screen, slower processor, less RAM, less storage space, smaller battery and the cameras have lower resolution too (but it's hard to tell how that translates into picture quality) than the Ultra 6.

    Nowhere near the same:

    No 4g on the moto g, 1gb v 2gb ram, cameras not the same, quad v octo core, 720p v 1080p, 5" v 5.5"

Plus don't buy from pixmania, their prices are shocking.

Have mine 3 weeks and very happy with it, no malfunctions so far. Not a big deal but if you have a lot of windows open is it possible to close all at once instead of one at a time by hitting x on the top right (after pressing the square button at bottom right)? Sometimes I have about 50 open takes a while to close them all indivdually.

Why do you want to close them?
