Payne can cover 12 too, seeing his physical qualities

Possibly but I'd rather have experienced cover there. He's playing out of position at 13 as it is.

I'm on board with bringing 2 loose-heads and 2 scrum-halves. Frees up room elsewhere. The only problem is if one of them goes down on the day of kick-off, which is highly unlikely. Otherwise Ireland is just a stones throw away and you can get another prop/scrum-half over in a matter of hours. It's a risk sure, but I think it's a risk worth taking.

But if you bring in an injury replacement, you cant bring back the player theyre replacing for the rest of the tournament, no? If Murray gets an injury that puts him out of the France game but hed be back for the QF, we'd be in trouble. I suppose they could go in with Madigan as back up 9 and hope Reddan doesnt get an injury, but its still very thin ice

You can't bring them over within hours though. There has to be 2 days notice to make them eligible to play. So if one of the 9s gets sick on the morning of the match say then we're bunched!

They can't train nor play for 48hrs after replacing an injured player.

Do you then sacrifice another player for a replacement scrummie for the France game? Say, bring Boss or Marmion over for Cave?

I'm sorry but I just don't get at all how these selections make sense. It's very very un Joe like assuming it's true.

We will be in the situation where an injury to any one of 6 players (Sexton, Madigan, Redden, Murray, Healy, McGrath) leaves us with one of the following happening (at least for the last 10-15 minutes of a game, as in all those positions Schmidt rarely gets played to play the full 80)

    1) Furlong at Loose Head
    2) Madigan at scrumhalf
    3) ??? At outhalf (Dave Kearney?)

That's just bonkers. Schmidt has amazed me before but this would be unbelievably strange.

The upside to this scenario is that we have

    1) Furlong instead of Bend as third choice Tighthead
    2) An extra outside back (so that we can have 2 not needed in each match day squad assuming that 4 make the match day squad)

The upsides just seem so small, and the risks so big.

    I'll be amazed if true.....

This has been said a lot, but I'll repeat, you can only replace a player that has a definite tournament ending injury that the team doctor and the tournament doctor both sign off on.
Can't choose to jettison a player otherwise.

So ... With all the hype about Henderson are you going to drop Toner?

We'd need 2 injuries at Loose Head and two injuries between 9 and 10 to have any problems. It's not as risky as you stated.

In the big games I think not.
Henderson will be the impact sub he was in the 6N.
He'll probably get 80 minutes vs Romania.

If Madigan is going to be an emergency 9, I hope he plays there in one of the next three matches.

Not for the bench. One injury within 48h before K-o, and Madigan is straight send to n°21

No. He is an excellent impact sub but for this tournament Id be stunned if Toner was dropped for any of the important games

Possible case for Strings to be going tbh if Boss is judged not to be up to it.

Look, If Reddan AND Murray both get just a knock, it's either Madigan, either Marmion and Boss (or even Stringer) for the rest of the tournament, as the injured ones can't come back!! Such an exciting gamble, let's admit this!:pac:

Yes, and stays on the bench unless injury number 2 occurs.

Agree but it means 80min+80+80 etc, until the injured one comes back or be definitively replaced.

Trying to get through 80 minutes with the same scrum half is massively hamstringing yourself. Very few teams want to do without that influx of pace and fresh legs.

and reddan doesnt have the legs to sustain 80mins of his best tempo.

i dont want him starting any of our big games.

Indeed, 80 minutes in a row, several times potentially

So, with Trimble now definitely out of the picture, who takes the 11 jersey as it's possibly the only jersey where there's a real debate? After the weekend, I'm leaning towards Dave Kearney slotting back in there and Zebo's ability to cover both wing and full back making him the likely candidate for the 23 jersey.

If Kearney doesn't make the team, I would think he's not in the 23 which I don't really see happening right now.

Neither Earls nor Fitzgerald made nearly a good enough case for the 11 jersey but there's a lot of rugby to be played between now and Italy.
