Jaysus, what's with all the nicknames today? Fadser, Geraldsie, Marmy.... worse then bleedin' twatter handles! Cringe...

Currently reading Sexton's book - it's all "Redser" this and "Cheiks" that.
Not to mention Bossy, Rossy, Darce, Drico, Corbs, Gats, Nugget, Earlsy, Cuthby, Paulie, Riff, Zeebs, Gilly, Church, Hibbs, Hinesy, Shaggy, Berch, Jenks, Jenno, Kissy, "Andy" Conway, "Stevie" Ferris, "Deccie" Kidney, "Kev" McLaughlin ,"Seanie" O'Brien, Mads, Ferg, Rog, Hago, Wig, Straussy, Paul "Bobby" Stridgeon.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy a good nickname as much as the next man but I question Johnny's ability to say someone's name in completion :D

A lot of the Irish lads books are like that. A bit annoying.

Same ghost writing most of them - no surprise the style is consistent !
    (Dricco's being an exception)

Ah it appears I accidentally posted before I was finished!

Yeah it seems to be a bit more prevalent with rugby books too

Wingers that are better than Dave Kearney:

    Bowe
    Trimble
    Gilroy
    Matt Healy
    Fitzgerald
    Earls
    McFadden
    Zebo
    Poolman (now irish qualified)

    Incorrect!!

Completely random and irrelevant question, but one that's been niggling away for the last few weeks as I look at stuff to do with the World Cup. In almost all of our pool games, it's listed as Ireland v Canada, Ireland v Romania, etc. But the France game, almost all sites list France v Ireland. Is there any specific reasoning behind how teams are listed? Is it based on ranking at the time of the draw or what? Just curious.

I think it's to do with seeding. France are top seeds so always listed first, Ireland second seeds so listed first against everyone except France, etc etc

Well, he's either out of the squad or Schmidt was always going to have him in regardless of the warm ups.

    So, in conclusion, I haven't a clue.

Even if Moore's injury has resolved, you'd wonder whether he'd be able to play anyway, considering he hasn't trained all summer.

But with Furlong out and possibly Moore out, plus Healy dodgy on the other side, we're looking a bit thin at prop...

Very possible we're going to the RWC with McGrath, Kilcoyne, Ross, White and Bent. Not ideal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,981 ✭✭✭connachta

I don't think it's a waste of space to bring 6 props, considering Italy and France are strong in that department, not to mind Argentina and New Zealand.

My preference, assuming Healy is out,
    would be McGrath, Kilcoyne, Buckley
    and Ross, Moore, White.

Ahah You wrote my previous post again:):)

Well, four years ago if we lost our first-choice loosehead and second and third choice tightheads, we'd have gone to the World Cup with Tom Court, Marcus Horan, Mike Ross and, I dunno, Jamie Hagan?

So we could be worse off!

But to be fair there are better people to judge props that I, so perhaps Bent is better than Buckley, or indeed White, I couldn't say.
Also Furlong was injured and got cut early on, so can't see him making a come-back before squad selection.

My guess is there will be surprises, so will just have to watch the Wales match and wait and see for the announcement next Monday.
Also James Cronin was unlucky to be injured and couldn't get a chance to impress, but maybe if there were an injury he could be in line for a call-up also.

With rumours that Moore is in doubt for this weekend, it may be that this will be the line-up,
    TH: Ross, White, Bent
    LH: McGrath, Kilcoyne, Buckley

It could be 5 props of course, but I have a bad feeling that we'll need to keep stocked in the front row for this campaign.

Healy seems pretty confident anyway, judging by a tweet last night about a big days training today.

Of course he will have that attitude even if he felt it was a long shot, but still - if a decision had already been made I wouldn't expect him to tweet something like that.

I seem to recall that his tweets have usually been a good indication of where he is in terms of recovery so fingers crossed (literally in Healy's case).

Ha, you sound like my missus, she was trying to justify his inclusion by his positive instagram posts!

Healy is a pretty upbeat guy, I reckon even if he wasn't making it he's not the type to hide under a rock.

If he is training then surely thats a good sign. Maybe the two scrum halfs idea being floated is to fit in 6 props to allow moore and healy to travel with the hope they get game time in the first two games??

Risky either way...with more risk on the S/H side tbh...

Hmmm. That could make sense, but tell me this - can we drop a prop and replace them with a scrum half?

Does it have to be like for like? For example if we bring Kilcoyne and White and then Healy & Moore prove fitness, drop them both and bring in Bent / 3rd Scrumie?

Pretty sure it has to be like for like, and the players have to be injured to be replaced - it would be a little too suspicious to have Healy and Moore fit again and Kilcoyne/White suddenly get injured at the same time...

I'm not sure of the actual rules, but I think there has to be some proof of injury for removal from the squad... so 'faking' an injury could a bloodgate in waiting.

Surely you couldn't call them back up if they've been replaced for 'injury' reasons. Which would be risky with the chances of Healy and Moore getting injured again if they're not 100% fit. Also I'd imagine it'd be pretty bad for morale seeing 2 players discarded like that.

I could see it with Healy, but not with both Healy and Moore.
I hope Healy can recover, in which case it could be
    LH: Healy, McGrath, Kilcoyne
    TH: Ross, White, Bent

Who would lose out if you added Moore into the fold above? Bent?
