Unpaid internships, where a company takes you on and doesn't pay you for the work you do for them because they're giving you "experience" instead.

Currently looking for one in the IT sector for after Christmas for college and most places are unpaid because it's classed as work experience.

Are you on a college work placement type thing?

I did my Co-op (college work placement) about 10 years ago and while I wasn't paid a huge amount I was getting abit more than min wage so was able to survive and live ok.

I wonder are these unpaid work placements killing college placements.

Equally I wonder about the companies who take these unpaid people on, what type of environment is it to work in? I don't think I'd like to work in a company that does that.

Saw a guy earlier on the N7 weaving about all over the place, when I passed by him I saw he was on his ****ing phone sending a text. He was absolutely all over the shop, in and out of different lanes. Moron.

Not unusual at all. I see people on their phones drifting almost every day of the week.

Most infuriating in many ways are the multiple times I've seen a Garda behind the wheel on their mobile. On those occasions I've seen them, there's nothing discreet about their actions as if they are simply above the law.

Worst drivers have to be the 30-50 year old bloke in the high powered saloon simply for how obnoxious and aggressive they are on the road, though. Mondeos, BMWs, Volvos, Passatts, A4s....bizarre number of middle aged guys driving those vehicles are dangerous drivers, with a huge sense of entitlement.

It's actually the opposite in some countries, it's quite bad. You'll find big companies will only give these unpaid internships to people who attend specific universities.

What this means in practice in most countries is that not only are you working for nothing but you are paying handsomely for the privilege of being there.

It suits the big firms because they get a stream of candidates for the positions. It suits the universities because they can market themselves as having high placement rates. It suits everyone except the candidates...

I was driving on the M50 last week in the left lane and a woman was driving in the middle lane not overtaking me. Just sitting level with me going the exact same speed like an absolute fcuking onion. (I actually hate people who do this. The M50 is full of these gob****es.)

Looked across and the passenger in her car was holding a phone to her ear and she was chatting away.

As bad as that is, it's far less bad than texting. At least she could most likely see the road.

Please note - not defending being on the phone while driving.

I did an unpaid work placement years ago, in the arse end of Mayo. Accommodation was provided but you wouldn't put a dog in it these days - damp, cold and mouldy, bunkbeds with dirty mattresses, the works. No car, no tv, 5 miles to the nearest shop/pub. Best 3 months craic, learned loads, and the contacts I made got me the start in my chosen career a few months later when I was offered a job based solely on the skills I picked up during the placement. I certainly had no regrets about not getting paid for a few months...

This comment popped up on a thread on reddit today and just wondering does anyone know if there's any truth behind it or is someone just spouting BS
The people here on Reddit sometimes put a YouTube stream up.

If not, then all the <snip> type streaming sites are an option. They actually are legal to stream, it's the host that's streaming it that's committing the crime. At least, according to UK law anyway.

Why the **** would you take an internship with no pay and then moan about there being no pay and living in a tent.

Is there some part of the logic process that's missing with this guy?

Because you have no choice in your industry but to do an unpaid internship to have a reasonable chance of employment but still think it's a complete joke?

Anyone read that the diving Tyrone player from the weekend is facing an eight week ban?

Not only that, he should be made to wear a pink t-shirt and walk the streets of Monaghan with a sign proclaiming "My hair is more important than sportsmanship".

I can't see that being upheld when it's appealed, they've gone from 0-100mph here.

    It's about 35 degrees here...beside the pool...

Just on Tierney McCann and that dive. I'm from tyrone and in my mind he is a disgrace to all sports. I hope he feels ashamed everytime he sticks his head outdoor.

Being from Tyrone in the first place is enough to be ashamed about, never mind diving in the GAA. ;)

Jeepers, I thought we might see you Saturday for the match.
It's not even half a day since you went!

I don't think I've ever met anyone from Tyrone :)

I'm having a golf lesson for the first time later this week :)

Enjoy. The most important thing in a golf swing (imo) is remembering to keep your head down and your eye on the ball. Don't look up until you're sure the ball is well gone. Absolutely crucial

What's the highest handicap you get when you start? Genuine question, I honestly don't know

I 'returned to golf' after several years out, and I've handed in 3 cards (bad) and got 22.
I think 28 is as high as you can get as an adult male.

28 is the highest but you won't be given that to start with. You'd have to have your handicap raised due to consistent bad play to hit that level, and I think the max you can go up in one year is 2.

I think 24 is about the highest you'd be given even if you handed in three terrible cards. I think most people who hand in bad cards start off at 20-22 though.

    36.

Most women who play off that sort of handicap I think would be older women who don't have the distance any more.
