Driving this the last week, Dodge Grand Caravan, 3.6 V6 Auto... makes around the same power as my Celica with half the displacement, still fairly able to shift none the less but it appears to be an alcaholic, chomped through just shy of 80 liters over around 400 miles, but no big deal at $2.50 a gallon.

Nice. What are you doing in Texas? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,903 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Well spotted :P i'm actually in New York but the rental has a Texas reg. Just a few of us are over on a couple of weeks holidays but i'm doing the driving, not that i mind.

It's easy to see why tourists cause so many accidents. All i needed was €15 for an international license and i was off driving a LHD car on the right side of the road. Lets just say it's very easy to forget where you are at times.

If I've worked that out right that's only $52/€47 to fill it up your mini van ? God if that's true it would only cost €35 to brim the Mondeo :p

It's around $2.50 a gallon for 87 octane and an American gallon is only 3.6 liters, not 4.5, so it works out around €0.63 per liter for low-ish quality fuel.

$2.95 a gallon for premium unleaded - that works out at €0.71 a litre...

Its got cheaper - in 2008 it was touching 4 bucks a gallon in places. You can get a feel for what kind of a culture shock that was for Americans when you consider that during the 90's it bumbled along at about 1.10 a gallon.

    It's all relative though.

Car and engine size were always huge in the US in comparison to Europe. It's relatively recent that US manufacturers have started making global models.

Is that the 7 seater model?

Going over in a few weeks time for a roadtrip, 6 lads and all the bells and whistles (carry on and checked bags). Any foreseeable issues with us squeezing into it....?

We've the same one booked! :D

Not much more than 10 years or so?

Even at that it's way more recent that engine size offerings are global.

Yeah, it's the 7 seat model. 4 of us took it from the airport with checked and carry on luggage and it was fine, could definitely have taken more if you packed it any way carefully.

It's a great car spec wise. 4 zone climate control, sat nav, dual dvd screens, reversing camera, automatic doors, full leather electric seats. Sturdy bus, very solid and quiet. Lacking in some areas but better than i was expecting.

$70 a day it's costing us i think. What are you paying?

Bigger displacement needed for such low octane fuel compared to small displacement and high octane fuel in Europe. Hence why big V8's were pumping out less than 200bhp and a 1.8 was pumping out the same here.

Just my opinion of course but that's how I think of it.

The boot looks to be different sizes depending on which pictures you look at! Had the 3.6l engine in a charger last year, hated the autobox on it!

Just under €70 a day but pick-up in San Diego and drop-off in Vegas...

You don't even need an international license.

Was gonna ask why an international license was needed?

I was thinking the same. I've never been asked for one in the states. I've only ever used one in non-eu, non english speaking countries.

Hence it's title i thought i did. It was mt first time renting abroad so i wasn't going to risk the whole thing for €15

Probably a good idea anyway, to be fair.

I think the IDL is required where the authorities cannot be expected to understand the language used in your License.

Whats the story of the new Mustang, are they selling them in Ireland at all? Have not seen any around. If I ever went down the new car road it would be this or a GT86.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,066 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

They were originally supposed to land in September.

My 04 Audi A3 1.6 petrol, first car I've owned (bikes are really my thing and drove them for years before decided I needed a car as well)
doesn't look a any older than when I got it, aprt from the few scratches I've inflicted on the rear bumper :D
Love it, its very smooth, which everyone remarks on, its a comfortable car to be in, slow but enough to get by (everything is slow after my ktm 990 smt :pac:), very reliable so far tho I do very low mileage.
At 6k I think I got a great car that I've had for 3 years now fault free, and could sell for between 3-4k now.
A really good choice I think.

They've been at it a lot longer than that but it's only been successful recently. The Sierra and mk1 Fiesta were the first afaik
