have 12 acres to knock at lunch time and bale tomorrow afternoon.

Was to be mowed yesterday evening but contractor broke the PTO on the mower and couldn't get a hardy Spicer anywhere as was 7pm . and no other pto shaft would fit it. I think that surprised him most.

first time in 5 years he has let me down, and not really his fault.

If it's the first pto then it's very short

Yes thats just the shaft but he was saying just using another one to get by but it was the length that got him I'd say

The heat is getting to him :p

We've all ours done bar one meadow dad gets with work. No fert so won't be ready for a couple weeks. Have a month in hand again so have silage to last a Leitrim winter. I.e. November to Mid April. Plus a month and then these last few extra bales, usually 10 on it.

I heard that alright. One neighbour this side knocked 40 acres yesterday evening. Felt like an inch of rain fell this morning. Half an inch plus forecast from this time tomorrow until Sunday morning.

Knocked 30 acres today tedded and will tedd, take and bale tomorrow. Not a drop of rain, combines going all day.

I mowed to encourage rain as all else has failed

I hope you got your first cut done, do you do a second cut? Will some farmers around you be looking at a fodder shortage this winter?

Christ there has been plenty of bogging done around here in fields that were cut and baled this past week or so, never seen the likes of it tbh. Farmers loosing out big time on fodder and the quality isn't good either.

I have first and second cut done. Got second cut last week. I am on top of limestone. Grass growing out over the ditch. Last year bought 14 bales had one left over. Biggest issue is grass goes to stem very fast. I always have a quandry in May/June, I have to allow for a possible drouth. Therefore I tend to let cover go a bit too strong. Any lad around me that cannot make enough fodder(and there are a few) ** *** **** ** ****.

Cr#p that's terrible to hear and me giving out about my little bit of stemmy paddocks that got wet. Puts things in perspective. What was you're first cut like quality wise?

Our first cut was grand dry stuff because we were lucky to get it done the second week of June when we had nice weather. Its the people that are only doing there first cuts of baled silage this month that are getting caught out, and we've second cut to do ourselves but with the way the weather is at the minute its hard to know when to cut.

Hard to believe there are people in that situation this year. Amazing how different the weather can be for parts of this small island

Got a 2 hr spill Sat night/Sun am followed by a strong drying wind. A 10 minute shower on Wed am and nothing else. Feeding 8 bales of silage per day ATM. 40% of farm shut down. Hoping for a few wet days to restart things

That's crazy, we usually have it worse than yous, but been utterly flying it last few weeks. Perfect amount of rain. Knocked 7acres Thursday morning with the aim to bale yday, had to abandon that due to heavy showers most the day, serious drying today tho, just baled it, 2 1/2 bales to the acre ha! Hopefully it will test well and be fit for milking cows! Got another 10acres or so to be taken out next week also, should leave a nice bank of leafy grass bales if the drought hits in the autumn or the rain spoils the party.

We've gone beyond what's comfortable here rainwise. If what's forecast lands tonight even our ground will be tested. Rain all day yesterday and the bones of an inch forecast for the next twenty hours with most of it due to land in a short period. Plenty of grass but the shine is going off it slightly at this stage.

300 bales made last 8 weather interrupted days . Shipped a hefty shower on one of the days but glad to be finished with no good spell in sight and quality slipping.

Baled an hour after tedding out one of the days . Was still worthwhile judging by one of the bales that needed a repair

200 bales made today, all home and dry as snuff.

Knocking hay Monday to get some rain, worth a try
