    Nearly everyone cuts weight though.
These bigger guys he'd be fighting are also cutting weight.
If they turned up at their natural weight too, then he wouldn't be fighting them. He'd be fighting the same guys.

That's what I'm saying. The whole thing is a joke.

Yea, once Chad & Herb were certain the money had hit their accounts they were never going to moan.

I admit I know Sweet FA about UFC but as I see it CM has a problem going forward and that is going to be his constant struggle to make the weight in this division.

If he beats Aldo then he is obviously the undisputed Champion and lets say that happens. However he is a freakish size in this division so logically he is gonna have to move up to lightweight where he could be on the small side. (please correct me if I am wrong here) I asked the question if he would dominate at LW and it seems the general concensus is that he would struggle.

So he seems to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea to coin a phrase, because if he doesn't do the business against Aldo he will be ripped apart by the haters. If he does the same folk will say he only dominated because of his size, which realistically he cannot maintain, and therefore if he fails at lightweight he will also be ripped apart by the same haters, what has the guy got to do to get the acclaim he deserves?

I noticed even before the fight with Mendes his fellow Professionals were writing him off too, what gives??

Poirier moved up to lightweight after McGregor destroyed him, he's winning comfortably there

But Chad was probably back to 155 and conor 160 last night

    Hardly a huge difference.

Just watched the fight there now. I'm no expert but thought Conor looked exhausted very early on.

He was taken down very easily too and that 2nd round looked exhausting even to watch. Mendes caught him with a lot of elbows and punches.

It was nice to see Conor humbled and respectful of his opponent at the end.

Again, I am no expert but I think his kicks, particularly his spining ones are weak. I think he leaves himself open for a quick taken down or punch.

A fit a ready Aldo would prove a tougher fight.

Dynamite in the left hand. That straight left was a thing of beauty!

Just watched it too and I think his kicks and punches was what weakened Chad in the end

He landed about ten clean ones after getting back up

    And in the first round.

You admit to being no expert (neither am I) then go on to give more credit to the man who was knocked the fuk out .......everyone of his victories is met with more criticisms and questions this and that what if's and very little credit......can only think it's the small Irish mentality of self put down at play

We may have watched a different fight so :)

When you are tired from a take down with 30secs left you don't chase down your opponent. When you have an 8inch reach you could play the round out. Conor didn't look tired.
    Conors body shots hurt Mendes.

Most of the guys have a decent chin, but Conors straight left, no one seems to be able to take it. People respect that, Mendes did. When the two stood up after Medes got in 6 or so nice elbows, it looked like it was Mendes who hand just been poundend. His body was open as he moved around, Medes would not have made the 5 rounds. Weeks to prepare is a joke. The training required for 5 rounds is harder on the body than the actual 5 round.

I don't think Aldo will ever fight Conor.

This nearly seems Italia 90'esque for todays generation.

I havent been that nervous watching any sporting event ever.

regarding the fight. I dont think there's any doubt that Conor needs to work on his takedown defence a bit more, but in fairness, he had 2 weeks notice to fight Mendes, who is, easily the best wrestler in the division.

I think his calmness, and above all else the use of his reach is keeping him in range, and his opponents out of range, which in turn means he controls just about every aspect of the fight. He certainly had Mendes shook up in that first round, you could see Mendes didnt really know how to close the distance.

Im not saying it was a cakewalk, certainly not. But with a full camp of preparation ,and of course minus the injuries, then i think he'd make it look even easier.

Regarding the injury. I heard about this through a friend that works for the publishing company that is currently writing Conor's autobiography.

I heard, the day after the Dublin press conference that Mcgregor had to see a knee specialist in Germany. I was also told the fight would more than likely not go ahead because of this. When i never heard any more about it, i just shrugged it off.

A lot was being mentioned about this in the last few weeks, and i think it became fairly common knowledge that Conor was getting stem cell injections to keep him in the fight, and thats one of the main reasons he was training in Las Vegas.

So when you factor all of this in, Conor's win last night was probably even more impressive.

Roll on Croke park, whenever that may be :D

Everybody cuts weight and tries to gain any advantage where they can, I don't see why he would move division unless he was sure he could dominate.
He's there to make as much money as he can in the quickest time possible, hes excelling at that objective right now, more than anyone in the history of the sport, and he's pretty entertaining too :)

Seems his injury was pretty bad before the fight.

He needs to get that knee sorted.

Sorry guys, I really haven't a clue. Just basing my opinion on the fight itself with not really knowing a much of the sport.

    His left punch was awesome

I think Conor hurt Mendes within the first few exchanges with those bodykicks. I have never seen Mendes move so slowly in a fight

Skipped this thread for the last while as some people were just insufferable. Same again for me, still not fan but can respect the fighter all the same.
One question, what's the difference between interim champ and no. 1 contender?

Yeah he definitely winded him badly with some of those early body shots. Mendes looked tired half way through the 1st round and even on 2 weeks notice he would never tire that quickly unless those body shots hurt him.

My 2c on the fight fwiw......

Until Mendes got him down in the 1st conor dominated.
After the first few punches and kicks mendes received he was hurt and knew he wouldn't be able to beat conor unless he got him down.
Conor wasn't really ready for how good mendes ground game was.
Once conor made it back up in the 2nd and landed the first punch you could see Mendes had given up.
Conors punches really must be that much better than anyone in the division......Aldo couldn't rock mendes with his punches......

Overall a good fight. Conor must realise now he needs to work on his ground game. He did a good job don't get me wrong but it is an area he's lacking in imo.

I do think that this was a harder fight for him than Aldo would have been but I also believe he needed this fight before fighting Aldo (if it ever happens!)

    On another note;

To all the 'true' MMA fans on here that told me numerous times throughout this thread that I had no clue what I was talking about.....>sticks tongue out and blows raspberry<

I said a tko for conor late in the 2nd or early in the 3rd............

I guess its that the interim champ is the de-facto champion if the "old" champion doesn't return to fight for his title.

If he was just #1 contender then the belt would be vacant and he would have to fight for it.

In part really, its semantics but then so is the concept of a "belt" if you really think about it logically :)

To escape that guillotine was not easy.

Mendes nearly broke his neck with the grip.

I thought his ground game was solid, never looked in real trouble.

Funny fight. Both guys looked drained especially Chad from the 2 week notice, but Conor as well maybe from the weight cut. A half a round in the intensity had dropped. I agree with Conor in the presser though - he was efficient. Even when he was on his back, he didn't work to hard to get to his feet, he waited for his opportunities and took them. Chad on the other hand was working hard from the top and it showed when they stood.

The Rory-Robbie fight was legendary. Gutted for Rory.

So, just waking up after that night of fights... That card was *stacked*... I was really hoping Conor would finish it with a flying knee just to keep it on theme! :)

The fight went pretty much how I predicted, Conor couldn't stop Mendes taking him down, Mendes couldn't stop Conor getting back up and Conor was absolutely dominant on the feet.

The game plan was smart, Mendes is carrying an *awful* lot of muscle on him and that drains blood and oxygen so I thought he might have problems with cardio. Clearly so did JK and Conor... from the off they targeted his body and Conor is right, if you've never been teeped in the gut you would dismiss them as annoyance kicks but man they drain your energy like nothing else. From the first round Mendes looked like he was in trouble with his cardio and it showed. At the end he was gassed imho and he was pretty much out on his feet before the left-straight.

Conor might be putting on a brave face but his ground game, to borrow a phrase from himself, was basic. He never looked like getting out from under Mendes and that wasn't a full mount, he was in Conor's guard! Against the likes of a cardio bunny like Edgar, that wont do.

All that said, what a cracking night to be an Irish fight fan.
