Well that was an excellent night of MMA , I really enjoyed the whole card and it's something I won't forget for a long while. We stuck to our game plan and went out around 9 for a few pints then came back and had a few bottles starting from the prelims and somehow we all managed to stay awake to the end...

Full credit to Lawlor and McDonald that was as good as fighting gets , two absolute warriors he gave everything they had it was brutal, both are extremely tough fighters. Was absolutely pumped after that fight.

Heart was in my mouth the whole two round for McG , Ten lads standing up screaming , drinking and biting their nails at 5 in the morning I thought he had that choke locked in and it was done but when he got up and went at him I think we all felt Chad was exausted and he could take it now...

I'm exausted but that was well worth staying up for and again something I'll remember for a long while.

First rugby and now you're on the MMA bandwagon. If Shels ever start winning again you'll be straight back to Tolka. :-P

    Completely agree though.

Hey, it's not a big step from boxing to MMA :p

And it's more likely that Jessica Alba will be giving me a call than Shels winning anytime soon. :pac:

Right lad freely admit I had never really heard of UFC since Conor's last fight which got me interested in it so started looking at bits of it and following bits and pieces here and other website and yes became a bandwagoner for mcgregor for my sins and mostly have no idea what I'm talking about
But I got the package in last night for the first time sitting down watching it all live and I do believe I am absolutely hooked nearly made the mistake of getting up for just Conor's fight it was unbelievable from start to finish conor wining was the iceing on the cake but the McDonaldvs lawler fight was absolutely unbelievable it was my highlight anyway I was shouting at the telly like a lunatic
So safe to say I may be around here more and will be watching a lot more of this promise I won't p1ss you regulars of with any stupid bandwagon post to much but wow UFC is great :)

And just to add as somebody who comes from a medical background anybody who said the ref stopped the fight to early is an idiot the ref was looking after chads safety and that's it conor did great and did the country proud

And finally I'd like to take back any stupid bandwagon comments I may have made about chad he seems an absolute gent and a legend aswell

Don't pay any attention to the band wagon comments. We all have to start somewhere liking something.

    Enjoy!

Its not always as good as last night :pac: I love it though!! First ever event I watched was UFC 79, and I haven't missed one since.

Blue in the face arguing with 2 lads today for whom it was the first ever UFC they watched. "Fix", "stopped too early", etc etc. A great stoppage by Dean in my opinion as the left clearly knocked Mendes down so id expect the ref to be on top of that immediately. The clock should have absolutely no bearing on the stoppage as the safety of the fighter must take precedence!
An absolutely phenomenal card and just watched the last 5 fights again. Have seen most UFCs since Ortiz Evans 1 and it's the best I remember. Was dissapointed Gunnar didn't get a bonus as I thought his performance was perfect. For me there is nothing like watching a top class jiu jitsu practitioner.
MacDonald Lawler was simply breathtaking. Gutted for Rory as he was literally 39-37 up on the 3 judges so he just had to avoid a 10-8! What heart from both men and that staredown at the end of the 4th was spine tingling :-)
For fear of getting attacked; after watching the McGregor fight a 2nd time now I have had a lot of my questions answered but I still have 2 major ones. I think his ground game has huge scope for improvement and I cannot help speculating that a top class black or even brown belt might have had 2 chokes locked in last night!
There is still wrestling questions for me although I acknowledge he brilliantly fought off a few attempts. Those excellent kicks clearly had Mendes gassed early enough and although I acknowledge he is one of the prime wrestlers at 145 he still got him down easy enough. With that said I do not think Aldo will take him down and I'm questioning whether his stand up would be good enough for McGregor.
Its the nature of mma that undefeated streaks are so bloody hard to string together and I hate to say it I think Edgar at Croke Park might be the fight to stop Conor. As someone said earlier a pure duracell bunny who has the wrestling tools, jiu jitsu and never ending cardio to cause trouble.
Great thing is we will defo get McGregor Mendes 2 at some stage although the result should be the same I've no doubt it'll be closer!
Finally hopefully this explodes the mma scene in Ireland and Conor gets the mainstream coverage he doesnt get at the moment. Imagine this was professional boxing. Homecomings, Functions in city centre galore. Mma is the best sport in the world and hopefully McGregor drives it further into the mainstream as started by guys like Liddell so many years ago.

Are people actually calling that stoppage into question?! REALLY!? Take off the tinfoil hats, let go of the hate that is poisoning your minds against all reason and get a ****ing life, lads.

Or maybe call down to SBG and we'll demonstrate just how these shots hurt.

    Fixed?! ****ing bellends.

Laying on the ground covering your head without the ability to defend is the same as a submission when you think about ......the ref allowing that continue because only seconds remained would have shown more bias than the idea he stopped it early......it's not his remit to think like that

I thought UFC was really real but after watching the fight last night I see it's just a mock up like that silly wrestling they do in the states, just stage play. I watched a fight between Aldo and mendes on YouTube and it really looked real but the mcgregor one last night didn't look real. When mendes was on top of mcgregor on the ground he was pretending to hit him, if it was real he could have killed him in that position!

I thought this was amusing. From the BBC:
Conor McGregor beats American Chad Mendes to win UFC title

Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor claimed the Ultimate Fighting Championship interim featherweight title by beating Chad Mendes.

McGregor, 26, won in Las Vegas to become the first UFC champion from the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

Go watch more than two ufc fights and educate yourself, dont come back here again till you have at least some idea of what youre talking about, some of the comments popping up on this are hilarious

    Classic BBC.

Scotland's Andy Murray is out of Wimbledon...United Kingdom's Andy Murray through to the Semi Finals

If Lawler vs, Rory could be a 5 round version of Arlovski vs. Browne, that'd be great.

Just remembered this post I made last night.

    Foreshadowing? :D

The BBC are not trying to say Conor's British at least. They're just stating he's the first champion to hail from either UK or Ireland which I can let them away with :o

I thought this was amusing. From the BBC:

    Lol, cheeky sods.

Let's not forget the other Irish (and Icelandic-Irish) involvement last night.

Seery showed huge heart and determination but was simply outclassed on the mat.

Pendred was his usual plodding useless self and was deservedly beaten.

I thought Gunnar Nelson had the least chance out of all our boys but he absolutely cruised it. Incredible performance against the much bigger Thatch.

Fair play to the fighters they do take a few hits, but lots of lads probably would for the money they make for putting on the show that's business everyone's a winner. Entertained fans and well paid fighters hahaha

Should RTE call Andy Murray the best tennis player to hail from the UK and Ireland?

It's a good oul bandwagon jump from the BBC.

Fantastic card last night, delighted for Lawlor and Gunni, obviously for Conor too.

Cant see Pendred lasting too long in the UFC, he seems like a good bloke and I'll always support him but my god his stand up is brutal.

Oh and the Reebok kits or uniforms or whatever are absolutely terrible looking.

No but if he was the first to be champion in his sport from either of our 2 countries. Then I'd let them away with it. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If they outright said from the UK then I'd be up in arms over it alright.

They're notorious (pun heh) for it though.. I remember another one..
Birmingham boxer Macklin faces Felix storm tonight for the title. Next morning,
Irish boxer Macklin loses to Sturm.
I think they do it purposely at this stage :D I see what you mean though,

What a night, still can't believe it. One of the lads who told me last year that this was human cockfighting, not a sport, should be banned and not a patch on boxing has now said 'Ah I knew McGregor would make it through the wrestling test and win the belt'.

I'm all for new people following the sport but I can't stand that Bandwagon bull****.

Some chin on Conor, I say he walks Aldo. I think they need to make Chad vs Frankie ASAP.

I'll echo what others have said here, I don't think Aldo will ever fight Conor.

Aldo never came that close to finishing Chad in their last fight (well at least within the bell), Conor did it in 2 rounds and he spent the majority of it on his back. If they stood up for the fight it probably would have ended sooner. I think Conor is right in a way in saying Aldo is done and he is going to retire. I think his heart is gone from fighting. Dropping out of 5 fights says in a way he only wants to fight when he wants to fight not when he is told to fight. Yes, hes been the champ for years and he deserves some leeway but this is not boxing, you cant pick and choose when and where to fight or only fight when your 100% fit. Conor fought Poirier after busting up ligaments in his hand, that shows Conor loves to fight and has the heart for it, while Aldo, not so much. Some of his antics from drug tests to posting x-rays of old injuries, have the UFC very pissed off with Aldo and to most have an interim belt because he missed this fight seemed harsh but i think a lot of people are being too lenient on Aldo, he does deserve the criticism and the disputed status of his belt.

I was very nervous watching Conor last night as tbh we had no real clue of how good Conor actually is, but if Conor does end up fighting Aldo I don't think I'll be anywhere close as nervous as we now have a better idea of Conor's ceiling. We at least know his ceiling is as good or better than the top 2 in his division and Aldo is a favorable matchup from Conor as opposed to Mendes.
