Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There was a dealership in a little village near us. They sold a few dozen altogether. Mainly Leone saloons with a few Mini Jumbos and a half dozen of the Leone pick ups. Garage owner claimed that they were poor for his business, as none of the ones he sold ever came in for any kind of repair!
The old Subaru sign is still in place, despite the garage being closed for nearly twenty years. Must take a pic. of it.

I had an early non turbo Impreza that developed a brake problem that nobody seemed to get to the bottom of so I rang the nearest main dealer which was phill kirwin in Duncormick, he said to come down on Saturday afternoon and we'll sort em out. He himself removed the calipers as the workshop staff were gone home and replaced the seals, charged me fûck all too.
An absolute gent of a man and if I recall correctly the only major mechanical issue I had with that car in 3 years until September 11 2001 when I drive it into the rear of a VW Jetta and finished her off.

Not sure if original Irish as its not stated, but havent seen one of these in YEARS and this one looks fairly spotless.

    Something about it I like.
That actually looks like it's made of Lego.

Or was a prop in an 80s movie set in the future where all cars look like that. :P

At the risk of getting a permanent ban I'm actually looking for an XT in good condition. Hated them when they came out, but just love the madness behind the design, no idea how to steer it with mild OCD.

Loved the SVX and came within a day of buying one when I lived in Germany but ended out with a W124 estate as I just needed something fast and spacious.

Cheers, but I saw that a few months ago. Rusted, accident damaged and parts needed for an NCT is a big no-no. Has the potential to be a serious money pit and it's be cheaper to get a LHD one from the continent when they hit 30 next year if I'm still desperate. (It's also crying out for a period reg plate).

    Healthy bidding on that Merc.

Couldnt have been in a barn that long if it managed to get itself imported into Ireland at some point since zv plates started. Something about "barn find" and "I am genuine" is bothering me.

When was it ZVs were introduced, I have it in my head it was sometime in the 90s so it could be possible and it is a 4 digit number so an early one I think

You are right - it was 1992... Still, I reckon that car had had a far more active existance than what the seller is trying to portray. Dont know why, I just do!! I'm getting cynical.

Also, ZV's were issued to counties in blocks, so its entirely possible that it was reg'ed relatively late in a county where there arent many classics - like Leitrim

(also, its a 65 merc, it wouldnt have been a classic till '95 - might have been imported then)

6406 is part of the Dublin first allocation (5801-6800). Dublin got a 1000, Cork 500 and the rest of the counties 200. I think 5 areas didn't burn through their allotted 200 (Leitrim, Limerick City, Longford, Sligo and Waterford City) before the "great computer change" of Dec 2011.

Dublin hadn't used their second allocation (originally pencilled in as 7201-17200) before that date either (I have 3 of those) and the last one before the bump up to 10001 was 9889.

Being a blow in I wouldn't have a clue when it was issued, but mid-1990s seems plausible to me.

I wish my barn was as nice as that. Who takes a valuable old Meec and out 15 years of "barn storage" and drives it 180 miles?

If it's genuine Irish then it's seriously rare and the €3500 asking isn't too far off the mark. They sold over 1.5m of these in the UK, but there's less than 2,000 left on the road.

That car was for sale a few months back for €5k with no engine

That could be said of a lot of 1980s cars. I don't have the UK top ten of 1985 handy, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are only a tiny proportion of those bread 'n' butter cars left. It's just natural shrinkage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,003 ✭✭✭Zoo4m8

Turbo Metro was hardly a bread and butter car ( grey porridge in the motorcycle world) even in its day it was a bit hen's teeth..

It was probably more reliable without the engine.

Needs some work for NCT, but otherwise this seems to be quite good value.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Love the Roller. Ad seems honest and it says it comes with previous (old) NCT. Checked that but the NCT website doesn't recognise the reg, or did I read it wrong? It is 80D1532, isn't it? I tried 80D1582 and 80D1592 as well

If all it needs is tyres and and a bearing and otherwise it is in good condition, it is good value for money. Anybody going to Terenure, tell us more about it if you see it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

If it was one year older it'd be worth more over here, mad

7.5k seems decent value these days for an early chrome bumper Spider. No shots of the interior suggests it might need work and hard to tell from those pics whether the body/paint would hold up on closer inspection.

Gorgeous cars... I never saw my blue one again after I sold it about 7 years ago. :(

    Never noticed the RHD...

Suggests it was brought from the US to the UK and converted over. They were never made in RHD. However I do find it very odd that this important work wasn't mentioned. How well does the buyer actually know the car... could you be sure it is rust free?

Call me a cynic, but the alloys just don't inspire confidence. Whyever anyone would put them onto a 124 Spider in beyond me, and I don't know if its just the photos, but they don't look exactly safe

    43487692.jpeg

Also are the seats original, they look a bit big but I know very little about these things outside of the fact that they are very very pretty

I think fiat always used 4v98 wheels, so even modern ones will fit. They might have spacers on them, track looks a bot wide for an early AS model. Could also be retro fitted with later running gear - they were a bit of a mecano set really. Either way,I works for me - but then I'm not pedantic about these things and hate using the word 'correct' in this context..

I just enjoy the car! :)

Same goes for seats - they could be alfa or lancia ( could be a frau label on the side)

    Seats almost certainly aftermarket...

    This was mine (*sniff*).

I had aftermarket wheels too which I always hated, though they weren't as bad as the ones on this one. I always wanted a set of cromadoras.

    Such a lovely rear end!

It doesn't have the rear quarter side light of american spec cars, also the lights are early European. Compare with the US lights on your old one.

At this stage hese cars are so pick'n'mix you would need a vin to be sure.

(you are right, they never made RHD versions, so has to be a conversion... Never knew that.)

Too much surely, unless that is some superficial damage from a leak and that mostly needs recommissioning. I don't know.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. That looks rather odd with those back doors, considering they can be converted to proper 2dr configuration.

5500 is a bit much considering the amount of work needed if you wanted to either race it properly or drive it around regularly.

There's an awful lot of work involved in fully converting to two door! If the glass in the back doors was replaced with one solid piece rather than the two pieces it would look much better I reckon, the forestry arches make a grand job of it though. With regards to work needed to drive it as is just going purely by the add I can't see how any work would be needed to drive it regularly, racing/rallying is a different story but shur the same goes for any rally spec escort a man would need a fortune to build one! As I see it around about 5k isn't too spoiled at all if it's running well and has no hidden rust issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

Well. Shes not the tidiest inside for daily use, its being listed as a rally car, so also probably have to change the shocks and sort out an exhaust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,996 ✭✭✭selectamatic

It being a wee bit untidy inside isn't what I'd call a big job to fix! Also if it had rally shocks then they'll be a massive improvement over standard and will also have adjustable stiffness so again no need to change them infact you'd be mad to change them. Then with the exhaust there's no way of telling what the set up is but even if its a straight through getting a back box won't be a huge task but again it wont be necessary it's all down to personal taste. I just feel when you see the price people want for properly rough escorts and compare it with that for around 5k it represents rather good value.
