Would you work somewhere without sick pay?

We were discussing this in work recently. A colleagues husband turned down a job with a company as he found out they didn't pay sick leave.

We have sick pay in my place and to be honest while I've only ever used it for two days, I wouldn't be happy to work somewhere without it. The thought of your pay being docked if you were out for a day with a cold. It probably encourages people to come in too, who should be at home and pass their sickness around the place.

Obviously it's one less worry if I was to ever develop a serious illness and be out for a few months that I would still be paid.

    Sick Pay? Well for some.

I did once- but was getting a very decent daily rate at the time. I rarely take a sickday to be honest. When you dont get paid for a sickday it motivates you to get in to the office no matter how bad you are. But then everyone does that and bugs spread round the office.

But now, I need all the sick pay I can get!

We have sick pay but it doesn't influence if I go to work or not. Haven't had a sick day and would only ever not go to work if I was in ribbons. I wouldn't mind working somewhere that in order for sickness to be paid it needed to be certified. Too many people in my place use their sick days like additional annual leave.

This is why some places won't pay for sick days. People would just abuse the system completely.

It would be a factor to consider when choosing a job.

This is the main reason for sick pay as far as I'm concerned, especially in somewhere like a hospital or Garda station. One person not staying home with something like a flu can cause a lot of damage.

As those of us who are self employed scratch our heads at the idea of getting paid while not working...

I'm not gonna come in and give everyone else a cold too. There is nothing more inconsiderate than people trying to be a martyr and coming into work and passing their germs around.

If they had the flu they wouldn't be able to get out of bed ;) A head cold shouldn't stop you from working.

Bet all the young folk with their cool lingo read the thread title and assumed you meant 'serious amount of wedge' when you said 'sick' pay.

It's his imagination, he believes everyone else is better off than him. Or else he believes tax planning is against the law silly man.

They must be envious of the non payment of social welfare if you're ever not working.

Never even worked anywhere with the glorious fancy notions of holiday pay, overtime, maternity pay, or bank holidays in lieu either, and never employed anyone that had them notions. Pay a good wage for a good day's work instead, everybody is much happier.

its been close to 10 years since I had a sick day, so I don't need sick pay

some people I work with can't go more than 2 weeks without calling in sick

Employees are entitled to 3 out of the 4 of those by law. Whether or not they take them is between them and their employer.

Never ever employ anyone who is familiar with the word 'entitled' ;)

I have the one phone which I use for work almost exclusively. I spend 70% of my working week on site with customers, so it's a necessity. Usually about 60-80 per month.

    Lavish I tells ya.

I've been in jobs where the sick pay system was totally abused. Take a week off get a doctors note and you doesn't loose a penny basically lads topping up there holiday days.

I myself will always go to work no matter how bad I am, I would go home however if I couldn't work.

Working since I was 15, I think I took one sick day ever and I was in hospital the day before.

You should switch to 3 SIM only. €20 + VAT per month for unlimited everything. Minimum of 2 phones though.

Worked in the public sector until last year and had sick pay (used it once in 12 years).

I couldn't honestly tell if my current employer pays if I become sick - which is a way of saying it wasn't a factor when deciding to come work for them.

I do, however, pay income continuance insurance just in case something really nasty happens :)

What about someone who does come in and spreads it around the place?

.....or the people who think what they have is a cold starting but it turns out to be flu, which they then spread around the place ;)

    This gets overstated.

Anyway a head cold never killed anyone.

So many things are called "the flu" that are no such thing.

Christ, we are a nation of fannies.
