Google the Dublin bike man. He has decent second hand bikes. And check out the adverts sub forum on the cycling forum. People often sell bits of use there.

Bought a bike of this lad a few years ago and I wouldn't recommend. The bike I bought has been more trouble than its worth, by the time I got it right I had replaced most of what was on it barring the frame.

Use your bike to work scheme if you are buying brand new. You get up to 1000 worth tax free which will save you a good bit.

Which is what I'm doing :D Irritatingly though my job insist on using biketowork.ie

Get a road bike for events like the Ring - good advice re frames etc from sullivio above. You don't need to spend a fortune to get a decent bike that you'll get a lot of pleasure from - you don't need carbon fibre, etc, aluminium is fine.

Get a decent pair of well-padded bib shorts if you're doing any distance. Did 98km on the Tour de Burren today and my ass hurt! On the plus side, no cramp today woohoo...

Is a road bike what I would call a mountain bike? I.e fat tyres and flat handlebars compared to a racing bike?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,818 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Nope, road bike is essentially a racing bike.

I have a full carbon. They're fierce comfortable but probably not worth the money. Damn smooth salesperson!

If you're willing to pay a bit extra a carbon fork and carbon seat post gives you a lot of he advantages anyway.

No. Road bikes are racers basically.

Lucky you... I race tri's and do a good bit of Time trailing and have a real cheap basic racer.

I did the Tour de Burren a few years ago. The day was miserable. Rain and wind. The route back then was like a figure of 8 so there was a point where you could turn back to the car instead of continuiing, needless to say I took that option!

I've done the Meath one and the Waterford ones too. Meath is good, Waterford is good too but fcuking hills!

I was surprised by Waterford, not for the tour de, in general as it's pretty hilly all over

  • Administrators Posts: 55,127 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Yea I thought how bad could it be. There are mountains in Waterford it turns out.

Anyone recommend some decent routes in Dublin actually? At the moment I'm alternating between laps of the Park and runs out to Howth and back.

Where are you starting from? North City / county? What's your furthest distance done too?

TBH Dublin is a bit crap for cycling cause most routes are very busy traffic and a lot of traffic lights.

Out to Howth is decent, so is Portmarnock. The best cycle path in Dublin is the one along the sea from Clontarf to Howth.

You can also head south into Wicklow if you're willing to do a bit of climbing. :)

    East Wall.

Furthest so far is about 30km, hoping to improve on that once I get my hands on the decent bike mind, it's a bit tough doing a long cycle on a bog standard, fat tyred mountain bike.

It was miserable today too for a while, from the first water station in Carron to the feed stop in Lisdoonvarna. Head wind too. I was nearly hypothermic... Hit Doolin, the sun came out, the jersey dried out, and we had a tailwind all the way home. And... no cramp. Plus, ice cream at the finish for everyone :)

Straight down the N11 or need I break out the map for the unknown territory that is South County Dublin?

N11 has a cycle lane but it's a bit boring. You could take a more scenic route:

East Link -> Blackrock -> Dun Laoghaire -> Dalkey -> Bray

Might get a bit lost going to Dalkey but it has the look of a decent route. Just relised that I've never actually visited any of the towns south of Dun Laoighre

Pretty flat where I am but plenty of fairly quiet country roads and drivers are decent, haven't had a really close call or any abuse shouted out a window like you hear about elsewhere. Have to travel to find any hills, needless to say I'm sh1t at climbing! 1000+ metres of it today, fecked now!
