These did not get the same coverage. They did not get the privilege of the Irish flag flying half-mast on government buildings.
What's so special about death by balcony?
January Athy crash: Four childhood friends dead
May Irish woman and daughter killed in car crash in Poland
June 2014 Five killed in weekend crashes in Westmeath and Monaghan

Probably agree with you on the Irish Flag however the reason it is probably getting this coverage is because the whole J1 experience is more than just college students heading away from the summer it's more a mindset that has been in most Irish families for 30 years. It is nearly like a communion or confirmation at this stage another step away from full adulthood. Also in a lot of cases parents are saying goodbye to their children at airports for the first time. I am not saying one life is more important than another just trying to explain why this tragedy might have stuck a chord with Irish families

Damien - can you say that again with a straight face?

The whole getting a car, passing a driving test is also a step into adulthood ..and then getting killed.
I'd wager if these young adults were not from a certain area of Dublin, t'would not be so much coverage in the media.

They should have a day dedicated to the people living in those houses in Newbridge in Kildare that will burn to the ground in less than 20 minutes and the fact it is known to the authorities and just waiting to happen again, talk about living on the edge.

It is not just state buildings that are doing this gesture. Maybe there are family connections, but some commercial buildings are doing it too. If it is purely as a mark of respect and they have no connection to the victims, then it is a great gesture.

The class issue is always raised in these types of scenarios, madeline mccann case being the prime example however in this instance I genuinely don't think where they were from would have made a difference

It's probably the biggest single loss of Irish lives in an incident abroad in 20 years or so or am I wrong?

Did he get such a high from yesterday's misery that he won't come off it in time to do any more shows this week?

But the work-visa program that allowed for the exchanges has in recent years become not just a source of aspiration, but also a source of embarrassment for Ireland, marked by a series of high-profile episodes involving drunken partying and the wrecking of apartments in places like San Francisco and Santa Barbara.

Not the day for stating this, whatever amount of truth there may be in it.

i hate those shows where they have multiple "my child died" calls, it nearly gets to a point where the parents are trying to out do each other and point score with tales of grief and getting over the death.

i wonder was joe put on gardening leave for the rest of the week as someone in montrose realised his lust and probing for death and suffering maybe a bit too much and too shortly after the events

I suspect that maybe he has traveled to the US to direct the investigation.

He couldn't possibly be on his way to present the show from California tomorrow - could he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Looks like I picked a good day to skip the show.

Surely Joe's not so out of touch with reality that he feels his presence on the ground so to speak would be of assistance to anyone or anything other than his own ego? I hope if he talks to any of the parents Lahv on air that they tell him to "f*ck off and let us grieve in peace you self-promoting lecherous scab"

I heard a hotel in California offered him a hall for the next funny friday.

Seriously though, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he was broadcasting (So to speak) from SF tomorrow. Photoshoots with families and loved ones. Big publicity for an ailing show.

I'll be amazed if he is... Not even Joe would be so out of touch with reality that he could honestly think his presence would help or be seen as anything but leech-like.

He thinks he's Gay Byrne II . He's capable of anything.
