The Yes side should be out there explaining why people should vote yes.

If the Yes side resorts to calling to calling No voters bigots, even with doing the above, they're done. I can't see it passing.

I'm sure there are some bigots in the No side but I'd say there's alot more people who don't fully understand what's going on.

For me any yes side faces (Norris etc) have been doing a brilliant job of explaining it. Let's not get confused with people who are supporting the yes vote and the actual people compaigning for the referendum.

At they end of the day it's very easy, people don't need to be caught up in the technicalities of anything, it's about another step to normalisation across all people in Ireland. Who wouldn't want that? I have yet to hear one logical argument as to why we shouldn't have that. Anything else is discrimination imo.

Firstly I hope the No campaigners keep up their sterling work with these wonderful posters.... They wording and theme make the Yes campaigns job that much easier.
Secondly, the very fact we need a referendum to allow 2 consenting adults to get married in this country kinda sickens me

The fact the bigoted, passive aggressive no posters are so poor it makes you wonder if some genius yes voters put them up in the first place. :D

The above referendum passed by less than 1%....

On face value, it seems illogical. But if I understand correctly it involves a change to the consitution. It would be bad form to set a precedent of changing the constitution without doing it through the correct ways. Not least, because it would allow the no campaign recourse to the courts (for those supporting the yes campaign). Best to do these things with proper form. Politicians also have a habit of trying to find ways round a constitution to suit their own ends. If they have the excuse that the precedent has already been set, what's to stop them amending the constitution on an entirely different matter for their own agenda. And what's the point of a constitition then if it's not worth the paper it's written on?

    Yes vote in this house...

Wife's mother to me "why are you voting yes?"

Me "cause gay people should be allowed to be as miserable in marriage as the rest of us"

    Her "oh"

*walks off muttering under her breath*

A referendum is the only mechanism here that can allow those two consenting adults to get married. Our Constitution was written in a different time.

I'm sure a lot of people will vote no just so they don't have even more feckin' weddings to go to and buy presents for.

The very fact that it needs a constitutional referendum is what galls me.
If we are to have a constitution, then let it be a constitution of today, frankly it needs to be completely rewritten.... But that would probably need a referendum too.

Well I'm definitely voting no. Not a chance I want some upstart 21 year-old running the country.

The constitution is flawed and outdated in some parts but a lot of it is still valid. However 25 years ago it was illegal for two gay people to kiss, so having the opportunity to allow them have equal status is a fairly significant change. Mind you there are many other issues outside marriage still to be addressed.

Marriage is a mistake that everyone should be allowed make once.

Well you see you're missing a very important topic, which to be fair you can't blame the Dubs for.

Outside of the pail we still eat our children. People outside Dublin very much equate marriage to a source of nutrition, and the whole debate has focused on financial issues due to that.

I looked at it that way too, I started thinking how in this day an age is an entire country has to actually vote on the matter of equality...

.. And then I couldn't help think of the 800 souls that drowned in the med because they don't have the luxury of that democracy from where they were fleeing.

As deplorable as those no posters are I wholeheartedly agree with their right to post them and have their say - we take our free discussion for granted at times.

You had it for a second... And then you lost it
I don't care about those posters, they make me laugh when I see them .....but, if this was a progressive, free thinking evolved country... We wouldn't be looking at those posters as every citizen of legal age would already be able to marry whomever they choose.

I've been replaying Final Fantasy 7 lately. If there was a word for video games similar to "choooooon" i would be using that right now.

Not sure if Freudian slip there IBF, but it seems you are implying Dublin is a basket case. Meanwhile, ouside of the area that is light in colour or shade (as well as being an area within determined bounds)...

The point is atleast we live in a country where we can vote. I just think we take that for granted sometimes when others don't have that luxury.

The great thing about the no posters is they're motivating people. The day they went up I was in blackbird in rathmines and if you were quiet for a second you could hear people everywhere talking about it, they were angry. They're motivated. They're absolutely all going to vote.

Unfortunately, there has always been a large disparity between people telling their peers they're voting and people getting off their holes and going down to the station on the day of the vote.

I think we'll see a higher than normal turn out with some demographics being significantly higher but there's a big chunk of people who never vote who will do the exact same thing.

Agreed. However if we don't encourage free thinking and progression and criticism and questioning of authority, we will never become that country that we want to be.

One of the most important parts of democracy is the freedom to challenge the authority (government/status quo etc). At times it's clear to all and sundry that the 'authority' is 'correct', (vote Yes etc) however the ability and freedom to hold them to account is what makes democracy work.

Exactly this. Voter apathy is the #1 reason I took the unders @ PP (68.5%). I think there are very few No voters that will miss the vote, whereas there is a far larger 'soft' Yes vote contingent that may well need to be corralled into the voting booths.
