They check thst the battery is securely fastened,

Yup. The S60 failed on that when I first tested it. No battery mount at all! It just sat there in the boot.

I know with BMW's they're in the boot but they have a jump point up front.

This is a new one on me, I will have to look into that, just so i know where the location in the front is.

I have a jump point under the bonnet too. I can remeber laughing last year when the nct guy roared "wheres the battery in this yoke" across the centre to a colleague. Still failed me on it the fecker :pac:

The jag had the battery in the boot too, dint think there was a jump point up front, but you can open the boot with the key.

There is on the XJ6 anyway. You'd have to look for it to be honest. I'd say all cars with boot batteries have a point under the bonnet.

I looked up the e39 location and mine has the plastic piece with a plus sign missing so the bolt is out in the open. I was always wondering what the bolt was for.

On the jag they recommend you jump start with the + cable on the battery and the - on the spare wheel bolt. You can hook up power to a metal part of the fuse box if the boot lock breaks.

Guy I worked with years ago had an e34, and there was a pole under the car (under the front footwell) that you could hook up, and by knowing some code it would unlock the doors

That's exactly what I have. Little flap behind a fuse box with a red positive lug underneath

    The common faults would be;
-If 110bhp dpf needs additive added and can cause trouble not sure if it was on 2005 models

    -injector seals

-egr valves it's more of when it will go rather than if 200-300 euro just for the part

-various suspension joints wear quickly track rods, certain bushings

-oil sludge can block the extremely narrow turbo oil feed pipe starve the turbo and cause failure.

    - lack of fuel lift pump can cause issues when fuel runs low of some cars. The system completly relies on vacuum as there is literally no pump to the the fuel from the tank to the engine bad design really.

Unless it has a fsh and has only ever been serviced with correct spec 5w30 oil I wouldn't bother. look over the engine very carefully.

Its the 1.6tdci LX model. It seems in good nick, drives very well and there's a few bits still being done to it in the garage. I was talking to the garage owner this evening and he said he'll check the service book and if the timing belt is within 30k km of its due date for a replacement then he'll change it, which is some bit of comfort as I know that replacing a timing belt on a ford is very expensive.

I think the battery in it may have been the original one. It was jaguar branded anyway.

Is it some after market mod?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,327 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I don't think so, I might be wrong, but on those when the car is deadlocked remotely the mechanical key doesn't open the door.
I saw him do it a good few times. It wasn't just him hooking up to a + point and then unlocking using the fob. Far as I remember this would unlock the car without the key,

Interested to know what the code is and is it unique to each car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,327 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Haven't a clue tbh. Never saw another car do that.

Did bmw ever have when the car e34 is deadlocked remotely the mechanical key doesn't open the door?

The timming belt is not to big of a job to do on them as timming belts go. I had to change mine early as the crank shaft seal went and pissed oil all over the timming belt. Interval is something like 200k km or 10 years Id be doing it a lot earlier than that. What mileage is on it ?
