General question lads drove a megane today drove fine but didn't stop great compared to the other meganes I drove. I mean there was a lot of travel in the brake peddle and you have to push it well down and put a reasonable amount of force on it to stop the car disc looked reasonable a bit of a lip nothing too much so would I be right in thinking it would be down to pads or could it be a brake fluid issue or some other component of the brakes no noise really was sitting up a while could that be part of the reason rear brake stuck on from handbrake being on.

I did, but it was my brothers, and owned before I started driving.

Then it was transferred into my name as he didn't want it anymore. I started driving, but drove the focus. My dad used the Daily.

Then I got the Rav, and gave my dad the Focus. By that point, the Daily had been out of DOE about 2 years and never once was taken care of mechanically. It did, literally, less than 5 minutes driving per day. I figured it was a time bomb and with my dad now using the Focus, there was no insurance on the Daily, and I didn't want someone setting it on fire or stealing it or such with no policy on it, so wanted rid before it caused more hassle than it was worth.

So it went for sale, to a chap that lives nearby. Sold it to him for €500. He reported back that he spent less than €700 to get it through the DOE (i think it was 700 anyway) and he then sold it on as far as I know, at a fairly decent profit, with a fresh DOE.

That was about 2 years ago.

That said, if I'd somewhere safe to store it, I'd have kept it. I never really wanted to sell it, but with nowhere for it to be kept/stored, it didn't make sense to keep it.

So although I officially owned a Daily for a while, I never really drove it.

The yellow one I linked to is also a bigger version. But I have only really began to get 'clued in' to cars in general and such since I started driving, myself, about 2.5 years ago, so I'm not sure what to look out for on a Daily (or van in general).

I presume I can get a mechanic to look over a van before buying, much like when buying a car?

EDIT: How you remembered I had a Daily I don't know?! How did you manage that? You have a crazy memory, man!

Check the fluid if you're looking at it again, after that check the pads, you should be able to see the condition they're in through the Alloys.

Yep I'm getting final prices on them they have 3 dynamique spec ones there so I'm seeing which I can get the best deal on ah tbh I wouldn't be buying it until they put the brakes right (if I do buy one nothing set in stone yet) but that one wasn't serviced yet so needed tyres and stuff which they do during the service he said they check brakes and all that stuff too safety check it whatever. I may go back tomorrow and properly look at them mechanically under the Bonnet and underneath and stuff Ill check the pads too.

Only seen this now don't be tempting me with them you know my weak spot. Id love one but doesn't really meet the cheap runaround car for a year criteria. The good news is I could be getting a renault the bad news is 197 or sport is nowhere in its ad.

    Another van is it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,031 ✭✭✭Bpmull

Well that would complete and utterly defeat the purpose of me changing :pac: the main reason for changing is getting a car if I never buy another van again it will be too soon way too restrictive with only being able to bring one person around.

I'd walk away from it. Who in their right mind lets a potential customer test drive a car with dodgy brakes?!

I mean dodgy is abit strong they stopped the car fine just I needed to but more force than I would like it wasn't like I was standing on the peddle to get it to stop either. The car came in hasn't been valeted serviced or prepared for sale yet I just asked them could I test drive it while I was there seemed like it was sitting there a week or two too they are just very busy trying to prep cars to get them through nct etc. I mean it would be all sorted before Id be buying it.

Just looking through this past few pages and getting up to date with what ya'll are on about.

True about the merc vans being in a different league to the cars. The uncle has a 95 merc as a bus, a 609d, 24 seats, but at this stage it's been resprayed at least 4 maybe 5 times since he bought it at 2 years old. Mainly due to poor body panels and rust everywhere. He's constantly washing the fleet though. Inside is so plain and basic around the dash, seats and windows are basic too, but he got his retrimmed, new seats, added luggage racks and curtains. It's 20 years old in sept I think, so won't be allowed on school runs anymore. But the vario is a van that hasn't changed damn all in the past 25 years, same square dash...

The new transit is okish... looks dire in minibus form, sits way too high off the ground. The older generation (07 on) look better to me. We have 3 of them and they are work horses, never give much bother, and ranging from 100k to 220k miles. Rust seems to still be an issue with them, the rear step rusts along with anywhere there is a rivit etc, just leaks rusty water. The wheels aren't made of great stuff. The single axle is fine, but the twin axle ones are dire bad, rust like mad. Can't control it at all.

    Anyway enough ramblings about rust!

It was supose to be a 1.4 golf but that didn't go down well. I was never necessarily looking for something better or faster than what I have. Anyway nothing is bought yet so we will wait and see. Unfortunately it is difficult to find a car that ticks all the boxes. Truth be known if I was willing to spend more money on it Id be straight out buying a mk6 golf but you have to draw a line somewhere can't just keep uping the budget.

The van conversions are the lower end and as mentioned need frequent repainting. The coach-built mercs are a lot nicer but then again they're into 6 figures.

Oh ya, there's quite a few van conversions alright. Ours is a factory bus though, has the power door, deep boot and high back seats. Says it in the manual somewhere too. The bigger newer ones are all carpeted and look decent, just the vario is still quite bland.

You've always wanted a 197 bp, why not get one?
You can't be worried about mpg all your life man!

I'm getting about 23 average on a daily 70 mile commute and covering a regular trip to mayo now most weekends.
    500 mile a week!

Lads are Clifford alarm systems decent. I mean I'm looking at a car that has one looks well professionally fitted. But I mean am I likely to have issues with it do they tend to run down the battery if left sitting up for a few days etc I don't even see the point of having it on such a new car but look it's on it now so I can't do much about that.

If it was done properly there'll be no issues with it. You may even find it brings your insurance down a tad.

I'll find out I think it was fitted by the garage anyway it looks well integrated to only reaso you would even know it has an alarm is that on the centre of the dash it has a little sensor with Clifford written on it but there are no wires or anything.

Just booked my NCT for the 2nd of May...here's hoping she bloody passes! I'll have it three years come mid May!

I have mine 2 years and 7 months. That's the longest I've ever held onto a car. They were all a year apart from the RX8 which was 2.5 years.

Just under a full year now. Seems like yesterday.

Still seems just faintly rediculous that I actually own a thing.

Probably because the testers are instantly blinded by the shine off the car so they can't see anything wrong :pac:
