    Yeah absolutely. I think it was in the Hal higdon overview of his plans because I've read it too!! But I don't do it as cross training for my running but as an activity in its own right. I love playing it, there's a social and teamwork element to it as well that I enjoy. There's no slide tackles allowed so thankfully injuries are rare aside from the odd knock. I did give it up for a while before the marathon as a precaution but we can't completely wrap ourselves in bubble wrap - even if I still do naturally recoil from someone coughing and sneezing on the bus :cool:

    Kabillion - is that more or less than a gazillion???? :D Yeah hopefully it's ok, the rest seems to be helping anyway. Only the odd twinge here and there so hopefully it just looks worse than it actually is. Fingers crossed I'll be back to see you zooming along the seafront again soon - I hope you're holding the fort down in my absence!!

    After my precautionary rest thunderbirds are go.......

    Monday 30th: Squash

    This was already booked since early last week but I said I'd see how the ankle felt over the few days off. Everything seemed fine - no issues with pressure, walking and cycling were good, swelling was down so said I'd chance squash. Not a peep out of it during the game or after so all good. First game in nearly two months so it was never going to be the most intense match which probably suited.

    Tuesday 31st: 6.01 miles @ 9:59, average HR 157bpm - 60 mins easy

    Runmute home, just in time to fit another March run in. Well, to say I should have had another layer or some gloves would be an understatement. The wind.....oh my. The legs felt shocking at the start, like I was moving in treacle. This was before I even turned into the headwind. Going across the Liffey by the Point nearly had me blown off the path, it was next to impossible to move in a straight line. I put the sluggishness down to the little break, by halfway they were definitely loosening out and having the wind behind me on the coast was a help. Great to be back at it. The few days off did the trick anyway.

    March was a bit of a mixed bag. No real drop in mileage despite the increased missed days which were a combination of normal rest, the ankle injury and adjusting a bit for Bohermeen. Disappointed to miss 10 days of the month but I feel what I did do was consistent enough.

    Wednesday 1st: 4.51 miles @ 10:00, average HR 158 bpm - 45 mins easy

    Runmute back into work. Uneventful aside from the charming office pedestrian commuter who decided to hock a big spit right across the footpath as I was overtaking him. It just missed me but I told him in a very ladylike fashion what I thought of his inability to check for other people before lobbing his secretions around :mad: Great to get this one out of the way early, evening free for dinner and a couple of drinks with the football girls then after work.

    Thursday 2nd: 4.88 miles @ 10:15, average HR 155 bpm - 50 mins easy

    Not sure how reliable the HR is on this one, it didn't seem to pick it up properly at the start. Low numbers for the pace I was doing, so I decided to ignore it a bit and just go by feel and keep it easy.

    Friday 3rd: 7.58 miles @ who knows, average HR N/A - trails

    Morning out in Howth with some of the folks around here. It was lovely to meet some new and old faces and put faces (and real names) to other usernames. Got a lift from aquinn along with Bungy Girl and met up with everyone else at the Dart station. Lots of ups (and more ups, and then some more ups), a few downs, muck, puddles, rocks and yummy cake to finish. I also seemed determined to drag firedance into the muck quagmire at the end (thanks for the saving hand!). Finished up covered in muck, tired but invigorated! Really enjoyable outing, great to do something different - especially with company. Forgot to pause the watch when we made a few stops, garmin says moving time was 1h 35m with average moving pace of 12:32.

    Heading away now for a few days down West Cork direction doing a bit of traveling around. The runners are packed and I'll try get out as much as I can. I've nearly finished the Clearlier graduate plan but I've decided to drop the last couple of weeks. I'm going to do the Dunshaughlin 10k in June as a goal race so I need to have a new plan and starting now will pretty much bring me up to the race. I've gone with the 8k/10k 30-42 miles per week plan from the Pfitzinger & Latter Faster Road Racing 5k to HM book I was given as a present. The weekly mileage is around what I've been doing for a while now and there's some intriguing looking sessions, so I think it should be challenging and interesting for me.

    they charge a fortune for mud baths in exclusive spas, we should have just gone with it today and gone one free of charge :-D great to finally meet you today. Good luck with the new plan, Dunshaughlin is a super race but there is one not so pretty climbing hill so stick a few hill sprints in your plan!!!!

    They're there alright - won't avoid them this time. I have my hill planned as well - the one from the raheny 5!

    Thanks Anna, hope you're on the mend. No target time yet, I think I'll see how the training goes first. McMillan was giving me 53/54 based on bohermeen but I might hope to take more off that based on more training. I'm doing the tallaght 5k and terenure 5 mile in May so they should give me an idea of where I'm at.

    Hi kit, it's 12 weeks. There's 11 weeks to the race so I'll tweak it to skip a week. It's 4/5 days of specific running and there's a mix of some tempo runs, hills, strides and intervals along with recovery, longer runs and easy. Some of the stuff I haven't done before so it looks challenging but not scary!! There's loads of plans for base building, 5ks up to half marathon distance with different plans for lower to higher mileage week people, and explanations of all the different types of runs. I'm sure it's nothing revolutionary for people who've seen this stuff before but it seems like a good next step for me anyway.

    Saturday 4th: 6 miles @ 9:54 w/ 6 x 12 sec hills & 6 x 100 metre strides, average HR 156bpm

    So I started my new plan with the first day calling for an easy run but with hill repeats and strides to add an element of speed. I'm back to using mileage, not times, for my runs but I'm going to continue working off HR for pretty much most of the different types of runs on the plan. The only tweak I might make is that most weeks call for two "endurance" runs which are classed as being similar but a bit more effort than the easier general aerobic runs. My initial feeling of looking at the plan is that it leaves me light on those easy runs, so I might swap some in for some of the second endurance runs. But that's just an idea at this stage, I'm sure I'll know more as the plan progresses. I headed out early-ish taking in the Bull Wall before heading to St. Anne's for the hill repeats. I then headed into the park for a quick loop around. Having initially planned to be well home before 9:30 I knew I was running late when I noticed people in all colours and day-glo emerging from various areas of the park heading towards the parkrun. Coming in the opposite direction was Duanington on his warm up, a quick chat and I left him to it and then passed Murph_D on the other side of the avenue also getting ready. Continued home then to hit the road Cork/Kerry direction for a few days away.

    Sunday 5th: 5 miles @ 10:09, average HR 160bpm

    The plan called for 8 miles but navigating this around holiday activities, general relaxing and our location on the road out to the Healy Pass (ie hills, hills and some more hills) meant I was hoping for 6 in reality. After a lovely bit of touring in the car and hiking I got back to our charming wagon caravan and headed back out. I normally don't like running on roads but this was barely a road and was in the literal middle of nowhere so I felt happy enough. Off I went up on what could kindly be described as "undulating" - mostly uphill at first and any downhill respite was tinged with a "what goes down, must come up" on an out and back course. I walked one small bit after a mile on a severely steep switchback (even going back down it was horrible) and the whole run was tough enough due to the profile. So not quite an "easy" run and the HR doesn't reflect what was happening in reality - lots of ups and downs, very rarely stayed consistent. It was something different though and great scenery. I called it at 5 as I ran out of quiet road and had already looped back on some to drag it out.

    Monday 6th: Rest.

    Technically rest but there was some more hiking. Down along the Beara Way right on the peninsula following the cliffs. Fantastic.

    Tuesday 7th: 3 miles @ 10:28, average HR 159bpm

    Back to the OH's family so on to a usual loop of the town. After the first half mile I knew the legs were still suffering from the previous few days so I said I'd ease off and keep this more like a recovery run. Try as I might though I couldn't keep the HR down and consistent. I've gotten good lately at finding a rhythm at the right HR and keeping it without too much checking of the watch, but today as soon as I took my eye off it it was going wandering. Maybe it was the heat. So even though the HR effort wasn't as easy as I hoped initially I'm hoping the slower pace still loosened out the legs.

    +1, looks like an interesting approach Laura! I think you're being smart with the endurance runs at the minute. Your body will let you know in time if it's too little or too much. Best of luck with it!:)

    Yeah it's exciting to be starting something different - nice tempo the other day, you seem to enjoying clearliers plan too!

    Thanks NE. I'm trying to get into that mentality of understanding why I'm doing everything and hopefully figuring out what does, or doesn't work for me. There mightn't be a major difference between the two runs but as you say I'll find out in time. Still catching up on things around here now I'm back in the land of full internet - glad to see your recent race ill health wasn't from anything too major that hopefully can't be corrected. Look after yourself!

    Wednesday 8th: Lactate threshold intervals

    7 miles inc 3 x 8 mins LT intervals with 3 mins recovery

    So my understanding of these LT intervals is that it's like a tempo run but broken down into intervals instead. With one aim being that with the recoveries it allows you to do more at that pace without increasing injury risk/allows you to do more etc. (Someone please correct me if I've got that wrong....I'm on a learning curve here).

    0.63 miles c/d @ 10:35

    The recoveries then were very easy jogged at 11 m/m pace.

    This was tough but satisfying. The first two average paces were very consistent with a slight drop on the third. There wasn't a drop in effort/HR really, and it wasn't that far off so not too unhappy. Depending which way I was heading I was either facing into beaming and warm sunshine or into the wind - I looked some state when I returned and I was sporting a nice rosy (ie sunburnt) face at dinner then :o

    Thursday 8th: 9 miles @ 9:57, average HR 158bpm

    Up earlier than I would have liked - we have a wedding today so this morning or possibly tired and maybe hungover tomorrow were my two options. Lovely morning but I'm getting fed of doing the same loops around the town!! I suspect the average HR should be higher, it seemed a bit erratic at times and my effort felt more than I think it should for that average. But this is my endurance run on the plan which has a slightly higher HR band so I'd say I was still in that but higher than the 157bpm. I remember something similar happening a while ago so I think the strap might need to be tightened again.

    Friday 10th - Monday 13th: Sick

    I succumbed to whatever that tummy bug is going around. Late Thursday night into Friday morning was horrendous - 10 hours of sprint dashes to the bathroom was not the speedwork I had in mind for my new plan :( Felt like I was hit by a bus to boot. Thought I was improved by Monday and was planning a run after work. By the time I got home that pipe dream was shelved, wasn't going to end well.

    Tuesday 14th: 4 miles @ 10:31, average HR 162bpm

    Felt reasonable so went out for an easy one to test the waters, so I dropped the speed session called for on the plan. Legs felt very sluggish at first but eased off. But I started getting a headache, HR was a bit higher than I would have liked (still in the easy range - just, at the high end) and overall just tired and meh-ness so called it at 4 miles. Not surprising considering I've barely picked at food in about 4 days. On the mend anyway so will hopefully be in the swing of things as the week goes on. I'm guessing the slightly erratic/elevated HR over the last week could be down to the bug. One thing caught my eye on this one. A sign at the bus stop saying "wait until the bus has come to a full stop before boarding". If the driver has stopped correctly (as they tend to do), and hasn't opened the doors until s/he's pulled in & stopped etc - how would you be doing this poorly timed boarding??? Leaping for a hold of the wing mirror????

    In other good news, work has finally started on the house. Yaaaay! Although I'm also anticipating boring upcoming Saturdays picking tiles and trying to spot the difference between 12 shades of paint that all look the same :eek:

    Thanks Firedance. They really do, but hopefully I'm through the worst of it. Just need to get my appetite back now.

    Glad you're on the mend! You might be a bit dehydrated still after being so unwell, could explain the headache and meh-ness ?

    Good luck with the paint selection. Just pick a random one of the 100's of shades of white. It'll go with everything :D

    Very possibly. I've been trying to up the water intake over the few days but probably playing catch up!

    Laura, sounds like you had same bug as me... it was a bad dose! Glad you're getting back to normal. Only upside for me was I lost a couple of pounds in a few days :)

    Wednesday 15th: Squash

    Felt great at this, from a fitness and illness recovery point of view. Loads of energy and the body felt strong. Good match too, probably our best in a while.

    Thursday 16th: 5.5 miles @ 10:15, average HR 161bpm

    Runmute home from work and ran to the new house for the first time. There might be a quicker route but I went this way to avoid the long drag up one road in particular and it was nice. I had been hoping for 6 but I was meeting a friend at the house and as I got there I saw his car was already in the drive. So I couldn't drag out the extra half mile but as I approached the house I was on 5.46 miles. In true OCD fashion I kept going past the house shouting at him getting out of his car - "Back in a minute....can't finish on an odd number......" as he pi$$ed himself laughing at me :o Anyway, the less said about that the better! Legs felt a bit creaky, just the body reminding me about the effort of the previous night.

    Friday 17th: 4.5 miles @ 10:03, average HR 159bpm

    Runmute back into work. Legs had settled and I felt nice and fresh. Great morning for it.

    Definitely on the mend, HR also seems to settling after the erratic spell last last week. Stuck to the easy runs so far this week but will continue with the planned lactate threshold run tomorrow seeing as I feel back to normal.

    That's the one!! I felt marginally guilty bypassing it because I thought of you doing it the other day! No, it's not too bad but I just didn't fancy it the other day and the route I went took in some quieter roads which was nicer. I'm sure I'll be frequenting it lots whenever we do move in.

    Saturday 18th: Lactate threshold intervals
    8 miles inc 10 mins x 2 & 8 mins x 1 @ LT

    Lovely bright day but windy. I found this session tough last week so I was little bit nervous about doing it again with longer times on two of the intervals. Did the warm up through St. Anne's so I could do the intervals on the stretch along the seafront. The recoveries were 3 mins very easy

    3 miles easy @ 10:04
    10 mins @ 8:04
    10 mins @ 8:11
    8 mins @ 8:41

    1.02 miles @ 10:55

    At first glance it looks like the wheels fell off for the last, but not quite. As I was doing the first interval the HR reading, which had been fine throughout the 3 mile warm up, started going haywire. Dropping to easier than recovery, going back up, dropping again. So I just ignored it and said I'd run at something that felt "comfortable" hard. I was surprised to see 7:xx on the lap pace every time I glanced at my watch, as I kept expecting it to settle into something more accurate as the 10 mins passed. Well into 7 minutes of the interval it was still showing high 7:xx's. As much as I wanted to keep it there I knew I was going too fast for the purpose of the session especially compared to my times last week. I was only on the first rep and I didn't want to ruin the whole session for the sake of one good rep in one bit of training. So I eased off a bit. The second rep was kind of the same, I only followed the HR for the second half when it had settled. The first bit was done by feel which was again probably a bit too fast. The final interval then was done by HR which was back to normal and is closer to the pace from last week!!

    Not the most consistent of times but the effort and pace in the first two is reassuring from an overall training perspective. One of my goals starting the year was a sub 25 minute 5k. The Tallaght 5k in a few weeks might be a bit too soon for that but hopefully this is a sign training is going in the right direction and that sort of time mightn't be too far away.

    Sunday 19th: 9 miles @ 9:58, average HR 161bpm

    I thought I'd feel stiffer after the previous day but I was ok, this was one of those runs where it just felt like a breeze. Effort and legs felt good, and the sun was shining. I passed people gathering for the National Road Relays in Raheny as I was heading for home. In the door, grabbed a jumper and headed back out to enjoy the sunshine and watch a great event. Brilliant to see such good running right up close and nice to meet a few people from around these parts again.

    31 miles done for the week so not too bad overall.

    Thanks, yeah I was surprised by them, never seen those 7:xx paces much before :eek: if I don't manage it at Tallaght I might target another one after this plan has finished when I've done Dunshaughlin.

    I know G, it's terrible. Away on holidays with sun, the beach, nice food and drink, relaxing away from normal life - I really feel for you :rolleyes: :D great to hear of your warm weather training by the way, good to keep the legs ticking over!
