A gang of robbers struck a Christian school in eastern India on Saturday, and one of them raped a 70-year-old nun, a senior official said.The man apparently did so, because she resisted the robbers, said P.B. Salim, chief administrator of the West Bengal state's Nadia district.
Previously, a church official had told CNN sister broadcaster CNN-IBN that three or four of the men had raped the woman.

Rape is endemic everywhere including here. Speak to Womens Aid Ireland or the rape crises center and they will inform you just how bad the situation is here. A lot happens behind closed doors here and with such a mindless alcohol culture and "post" catholic patriarchal mindset.. well?

I have three female friends that have backpacked India with out any problems and indeed they all loved the continent! The media are on this now so these incidents are making the headlines. Yes rape and the subjection of women in parts of India is a problem. Many places it is not though. But let's not keep the "us and them" situation in flow? People are the same everywhere.. the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful.

but the article still states (twice!) It was one bloke and previously reported, which I read as superceded that it 3 or 4.

I'm not getting up and having breakfast until this is sorted

To take a country of equivalent scale, China has a greater population than India. I would not be worried about my girlfriend walking around a Chinese city on her own and risking getting raped. India ... I am not sure :-/

You could argue that information is more controlled in China when it comes to domestic news, but I think if a Western woman is to get raped in either country it would equally be reported be European newspapers. I have read about this happening in India regularly, and not in China - which is why it seems to me that Indian society seems to either be producing an abnormally high number of potential sexual predators or to be less able to keep them under control.

India is a country of over a billion people there is obviously going to be more stories like this in the news than other countries because of the sheer size of the population.

What happened is terrible and I hope the nun is okay but dont tar a whole country with the same brush because of a few creeps.

I think saying it is a non issue as there will be more reports due to the size of the country is not a very valid argument.

Have a look at Google trends the word rape associated to each of the 5 most populated countries in the world:

The most worrying aspects of Indian rapists is that so many seem to form roaming gangs, like packs of dogs, looking for women/children to rape. That is bizarre behaviour. Also, in the case of this nun, 7 men stood by and allowed a man to rape an elderly nun. They are filth, as are any men who stand by and allow someone to be raped instead of intervening and preventing the rape.

There seems to be a cultural belief that the poorest members of Indian society are worthless and as such rapes are ignored. We hear of more and more incidents of children having been raped and murdered by groups of rapists. So whilst rape is a global problem, groups of rapists working together is unusual, thankfully. Given the caste system and backward beliefs about the treatment of women by the Indian Government I would believe that rape is massively under-reported or goes un-investigated.

That's one interpretation. Some of boards lgbt have quite the soft spot for exotic medieval homophobic cultures with a sassy racial bias. RCC is a little too pasty white and close to home to apply, so lacks that essential rad chic status.
