Such a shame gary but the little ones are demanding. Still 4 k should pick u up a nice clean bike. I was reading on biker yesterday about buying in germany. Can be a bit of hassle but they have alot more choice and tough and stringent bike maintenance tests.

I know a guy who bought his bike in Germany.

He got a cracking bike for a reasonable price.

Yeah its hit and miss. There is a german lad in my job so translating etc etc would be handy enough. Biggest barrier would be to find a trustworthy dealer that has gone through this process before. It does seem complicated with reg plates and insurance though.

A bit like buying any bike, I think.
Trying to get the bike you want in good nick, for a good price, and hope to hell it's not a ',lemon'.

Unless you buy brand new, which a lot of people are against.

Go to Delboys Garage on youtube, he has a clip up on cleaning and servicing break calipers

Its a handy job, I certainly wouldn't be paying anyone to do it.

Btw just for your info, riding on seized calipers in this ice is deadly dangerous as although your wheel appears to be turning whilst riding it WILL lock up much, much easier on ice and often without you touching the break.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of the wheels locking up by itself riding slow. I am looking to get blue dot calipers for the rear, which is supposed to be better when it comes to handling road muck. I certainly would love to do it myself (have most of the tools in the box over the last two years) but I don't have place to do it - I couldn't attempt doing it outdoors unless it's at least 10 degrees.

It was yesterday not today !! But I did a service on the tiger and adjusted the clutch and throttle cables. It was not due a change yet but I wanted to get it done early. Oil was still in good nick which I was very pleased with.

Also bought some new Mer polish and wax and gave it a once over. Then we went out to work on the chicken strips.

leppla, you just reminded me of an issue I was reading about and actually have with my Tiger.
Turn your handlebars from side to side,
Look down at the right hand fork and you should see the clutch cable rubbing off it.

Now I couldn't believe what I saw next.
The cable is wearing through the fork.
Not a mark on the cable, just a dimple the size of the top of my finger on the fork.

There's only 10,000 miles on mine but i imagine it would eventually go all the way through if I hadn't noticed it.

Yes I have read of that problem before alright. Poorly routed on some early models I think. There should be a clip ( like a metal ring ) that holds it on the top of the radiator also, If this is not there it can wear away the radiator which is not good news.

It's mental alright, you'd think the cable would wear first but no it's still like new.

I can't really get a pic because of where it but the link below is a guy with a speed triple with the same issue

Bike all sorted. (Was losing one cylinder on throttle.

New plugs, 09 coils, no good.

Down to John o Grady. 6 hours later all sorted.

Clearances were fine. Injectors were very bad sprays.

And up on the dyno to make sure it's sweet.

Engine is soo smooth now. And goes like ****

I killed my bike today... Had a fcuked head gasket but needed to keep going on it, finally seized today need to get money together for a new bike :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,483 ✭✭✭positron

    Aww, that's sad.

Apart from the usual oiling the chain and checking air pressure, I also changed the oil on my old Fazer today. Second DIY oil change ever, and had to curse to get the oil drain plug off. I must have tightened it too much last time. The washer looks flat as paper. Luckily I had a spare washer, so that went in and finger tight + just a tiny bit with spanner this time. Hopefully it's enough to keep it in place, will check for leak in a while.

I used normal Halfords 10w40 by the way. Same as what I did last time and over the last six months and 5k miles the bike actually felt better than how it would feel when it had oil changed by the bike mechanic... so I am going to continue with standard 10w40 and I think it will do just be fine...
