They're a more impressive unit than I thought. They finally have a few decent batters and a couple of pace bowlers.

Some serious moves taking place in the NFL: McCoy to Bills, Marshall to Jets, Suh to Dolphins, Julius Thomas on verge of going to Jaguars, Maclin on verge of going to Eagles, 49ers have put Kaep on trading list, Lynch signs new deal with Seahawks, Gore going to Eagles.

    Lots of movement happening there.

I'm a little bit disappointed with the Suh movement tbh. Early in contract negotiations he was making all the right noises about how he wanted to stay with the Lions as there was a good atmosphere in the locker room etc. so I assumed he would take some sort of home town discount but it seems he has gone after the extra bit of money which you can't argue with in a sport as volatile as American Football.

How does the NFL salary cap interact with this free agency period and then the Draft? Do franchises have to leave room in their cap to sign players out of college or are rookie contracts separate from the cap?

I also don't understand what a tracker mortgage franchise tag is. :o

Basically you force the player you tag to remain on your team for another year and he is paid the average amount out of the top 5 salaries in his position.

It gives the team a chance to continue working on a contract with a player they want to stay long term.

They have to leave room, but they can be over the cap at this stage anyway and if they cut someone they can get some of their cap space back (based on how much of the contract was guarranteed). Rookie contracts are on a set tier now so most teams know exactly what they need, and only really 1st/2nd/3rd round rookies are getting paid any decent amount.

The franchise tag is basically a mechanism which allows a team to force a player to remain for one extra year at the team. They get to use it once and the player they use it on gets an amount which is calculated based on the top earners at their position in the league (the exact calculation I don't know). It's usually a last-ditch effort to keep an elite player at the team.

There's seperate rookie salary caps. Franchise tag is where the team can't agree on terms with a player who's in his final year of contract and about to become a free agent, so he gets signed to a 1 year deal at a set amount.

I have a horrible feeling the 9ers are going to suck this year :/

Way more movement going on than last year it seems to me. Dolphins are going to massively overpay Suh.

Yeah absolutely, I'm glad we didn't overpay for Suh because we can use that money to have a competent o-line and find a d-line guy who may not be as elite as Suh but can fill the hole nicely.

They're going to have a really interesting off season with Kaepernick possibly being shown the door along with Gore and Crabtree. Throw in a new head coach too and it will be a pretty interesting year.

They'll be doing well for it to be a successful one though. Whole new offence is needed now.

I don't think Kaep is going anywhere. He had a rough season but he's only a year off from signing a mega, team-friendly, deal. Will be a very different looking offense regardless though.

Now there are reports that Willis is going to retire. That would be an absolutely massive blow.

More NFL questions, to keep ye on a roll! :pac:

    1. Are there any transfer fees in player trades? If not, is it because they aren't allowed?

    2. If a player is traded to a new team, is his contract with his former team rescinded or does the new team agree to fulfil the terms of his old contract? (or either?)

    3. In contract announcements, I notice a part of the money is stated as "guaranteed". What does that imply versus "unguaranteed"?

    4. Anyone want to play Madden 25 on PS4? :D

    1. No, I don't believe so. You can trade players and draft picks.
    2. The new team takes on the existing contract but will often try and get a new contract signed.
    3. Guaranteed money is generally guaranteed for the year after a certain date (generally start of the league year which is around now). Even if the player is cut mid-season they will get all their guaranteed money. If you're not a star you won't have any guaranteed money so if you're dropped that's it, no more money coming your way (and people get dropped a lot. 9ers dropped and re-signed Kassim Osgood about 4 times during the course of last season).

How did I do in the fantasy NFL?

Not sure I looked at it after week 2. The draft was the most fun part!

Even Thomond scored more points over the course of the season.

BUT you did beat him when you faced one another so you got that going for you.
