You can call the Equality and Human Rights Commission which is similar to the Equality Authority here.

The bigger issue imo is the website agreeing to run the ad with that in it. I would expect a business to have more cop on.

So in the world of homosexuality people are not allowed have differing opinions and a different morality.
Why is it homosexuals always want their rights while stamping on the rights others.
Every time I see a dose of pink outrage I hear the words homophobic being bandied about in the same sentence.
Just because someone disagrees with homosexuality does not automatically make them afraid of homosexuals.

For the record I have a homosexual family member whom I treat no differently to any other member of my family but she knows I disagree with her lifestyle and accepts that. She doesn't impose her choices on me and visa versa.

They may not have agreed anything. It's more likely it just didn't get caught by their moderator / community manager.

I'd be very surprised if any website advertising property was unaware of equality legislation and most would have T&Cs specifically allowing them to delete your ad.

    ...

Reported it to the site. Ball now in their court. Let's see if it disappears or gets edited.

What is to disagree with? In all fairness that's so ridiculous. It's not a political opinion or a particular belief. It's a sexual orientation. That is kind of like 'disagreeing' with blood type B. Homophobia refers to a dislike or hatred of gay people. Using the word to describe people who are prejudice against gay people without actually being afraid of them, is entirely appropriate. For example the owners of the house in the OP are clearly homophobic as they are showing an irrational dislike of/desire to avoid contact with same sex couples.

Irrational from whose perpective ? Yours!
From their perspective I would assume they are quiet rational in their opinion of homosexuality.
As for disagreeing with homosexuality. One can disagree with the premis that a person is born homosexual.
One can disagree with it from a moral/religious standpoint and believe it is wrong.
Its also possible to believe all the above and not dislike or hate homosexual people...but it makes good press to brand everyone who has a different viewpoint as being homosexual.
Its nothing but bullying a segment of the population in changing their opinion and abandoning their beliefs. Lets out them and call them homophobic. What happened to their "equal rights"?

When they decide to foist their opinions/beliefs into the public domain and it results in people being discriminated against . That's when their beliefs are a problem.

It's a funny thread to read through because there are a few people here who don't seem to realise that equality works both ways, to think that it's ok to have gay only resorts and not straight only resorts smacks of hypocrisy.

IMO people getting offended by this are the type of people standing out on the street waiting for someone to pass by and offend them. If I saw a place that didn't allow Irish I'd say f!ck them and spend my money somewhere where it was welcomed and appreciated.

If ya think I'm a homophobe or anything like that I'm not, I'l be voting yes in the same sex ref in May. I think the ghays should be allowed to be as miserable as everyone else.:pac::pac::pac:

Well considering that you cannot discriminate against gay couples in the UK or Spain this ad simply shouldn't be up.

Spain was actually one of the first countries in the world to introduce full same sex marriage back in 2005. It's not exactly gay unfriendly and generally is very progressive.

In all fairness now those "gay resorts" are marketed to gay men, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say they don't exactly have family fun in mind for their clientèle! They would not discriminate against a straight guy going; in fact they'd probably encourage it (ifyouknowhatimean)
The OP's link is discrimination against gay couples, its not being marketed to straight people. It is discrimination. Anyone who says otherwise is deluded.

Now; The owner of said property can lease it to whoever the flip he/she likes based on whatever arbitrary rules he/she lives by. It might not be just but that's life.

    It is discrimination.
    Don't be offended
    don't defend it.

It's pure discrimination nothing else to it. People who are linking the gay resorts, it's a bit different. I don't think anyone who's not gay would have any interest going to a gay resort.

And Gay people would want to stay in a house where they are not welcome?

Look, I have no problem with you disagreeing with discrimination on grounds of sexual preference, but at least apply your reasoning consistently is you want to be taken seriously. If you disagree with a place not welcoming gays, then you should also disagree with a place not welcoming straights

There's a Polish supermarket down the road, all their signs are in Polish and directed at polish at people. They are not "welcoming" you.

They will still take your money and say thank you (or the polish equivalent)

    Understand?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭Pumpkinseeds

Discrimination is discrimination. People would be up in arms if they were excluding people based on colour or gender but yet it seems to be acceptable to discriminate based on sexual orientation. They're running a business, so they shouldn't be discriminating against anyone. I wonder if anyone has reported the advert to whatever company is advertising the property for them. It really is unacceptable in this day and age.

    Eh, no.

The resorts are marketing, not discriminating.
The person in the OP is discriminating because he/she went out of their way to express that a certain group of people are not welcome.

You said in an earlier post the same logic should be applied to the gay resorts as to the ad in the OP.

But the two are just not comparable, it's a ridiculous parallel drawn by someone with a point to prove.

Actually it's not, there are certain circumstances where discrimination is legal. Take the Orange Order for instance perfectly allowed to discriminate against Catholics.

Do I think this is right, no, would I want to join, no.

Why would people want to go somewhere that they're not welcome. Case in point is the many universities in the United States that are predominantly black because they were not welcome, allowed in many cases, to enrol at other universities. They set up institutions that were equal or better than other institutions.

Why would a gay person want to go to a place where they're discriminated against when there are many more places where they are welcome and offer a superior experience.

    Ooh Prissy!
My point is that we need to apply the same logic either way. Your 'marketing not discriminating' point is nonsense. If you don't mind 'Gay Only' advertisements then you should have no problems with 'Straight Only' advertisements.

It won't be published, has to go through moderation and I didn't pretend I had stated there. I didn't say anything about the house just that I would not use house, nor will I be using website to book my holiday since they allow bigotry and that I will put it on face book so none of my friends, friends friends etc will be staying there either. Just letting moderation know that bigotry could be very bad for business :)

So you wrote a review (or whatever you want to call it) giving your opinion of a place you have never been to and now you intend to TELL your friends not to stay there.

It;s not prissy; Its logic! Which you refuse to see, apparently.

If I organised a trip to the Vatican, I'd say "Catholic Missionary for the 20th of July, bring your rosary beads!". Is that discrimination against Protestants? Of course not.

If I said "Catholic.... rosary beads (no Protestants)" That is discrimination.

Anyway no one's opinion was ever changed over the internet so i'll leave it there; even though I could go on indefinitely trying to enlighten people :P

Semantics is the name of the game my friend!

By the way, I know that "Gay only" is discrimination. No denying it.

Are you able to give an example of a rational reason why a rental property owner would want to ban gay couples from renting the property?
As for disagreeing with homosexuality. One can disagree with the premis that a person is born homosexual.
One can disagree that water is wet too if one wishes.
One can disagree with it from a moral/religious standpoint and believe it is wrong.
One can certainly believe it is 'wrong'. That would however make one homophobic.
Its also possible to believe all the above and not dislike or hate homosexual people
One may be able to believe the above and not dislike or hate individual gay people, however to believe all of the above indicates a prejudice against them, so one is still covered by the definition of homophobia!

...but it makes good press to brand everyone who has a different viewpoint as being homosexual.
I think you meant homophobic? People with the above viewpoints are homophobic! See definition.
Its nothing but bullying a segment of the population in changing their opinion and abandoning their beliefs
I love this! "My beliefs tell me I should bully and discriminate and if you try to prevent me you are bullying and discriminating against me!"
Lets out them and call them homophobic. What happened to their "equal rights"?
How are people who are prejudice against gay people having their equal rights violated by being described as the correct term for a person who is prejudice against gay people?
