Or would I be better off with one of the Chinese boxes?

Looks like a great little box judging by the reviews. Anyone got one running with saorview?

If I click into Geekbuying's UK warehouse store and buy a box from there will there be no customs?

I don't think this box has Saorview DTT capability, DVB-S2 is satellite as far as I know so you could get free to air or maybe Freesat but I'm no expert.

If I could have a dream box it would have both DVB-S2 and DTT built into an Android box with a single 7 day EPG so you could channel surf like you can with UPC/Sky and also have all the benefits of XBMC and stand alone streaming apps like Netflix and others which can't be mentioned.

Can I ask what the big difference is between the Minix X8-h and the X8-h Plus? A friend has asked me to recommend a box. I have 2 X8-h's and was going to get him one but I guess the X8-h Plus is an upgrade on the X8-h?

Edit: I just saw that Minix are bringing out a Win 8.1 box next week - http://liliputing.com/2015/01/minix-neo-z64-mini-pc-now-available-android-windows.html

I'm now thinking this could be the way to go as I hate how the Android Netflix app is only Standard Definition on the X8-h.

Would a Win 8.1 Minix box be the best or worst of both worlds?

    Thoughts?

This Win 8.1 media box http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box/pp_139576.html is only $107 using the “PipoX7LM“ coupon and gets a serious review here http://hometheatrelife.com/pipo-x7-review. Might be worth a punt??

WeTek have very high rating because they have signed up with OpenELEC to allow it to become a platform for OpenELEC. Remember the Kodi forums only care about Kodi. Nothing else

I find OpenELEC great but I know people use standalone apps which is not an option with OpenELEC.

I would also guess that is WeTek are throwing money at OpenELEC they might throw a few quid towards Kodi but that is pure speculation on my part.

I have no idea how the WeTek platform is to run Android, always looked way overpriced to me......

Actually there are DVB-S2 (Sat) and DVB-T/T2 (Terrestrial) versions of this box available, you can select either on the order page. So as long as it supports MPEG4 it may well support Saorview ...anyone know?

I've dropped them an email to ask...

If they could somehow bundle both DVB-S2 (Sat) and DVB-T/T2 (Terrestrial) into the box it would have serious potential to become the only "box" you need to watch TV and stream online etc.

    Hi,

Looking at purchasing some sort of droid box. Still a bit confused at how they work and which to go for. I would rather quality > cost. Don't mind spending over 100euros for a decent box. Mainly going to use to watch sports channels, movies, and the Sky Atlantic programmes, most notably Game of thrones (And Fortitude looks good).

Was considering the Minix Neo X8 H.

Will this box do the job? Plan on hooking it up through ethernet to keep strong connection.

Here you go regarding the no longer produced X8 H and the replacement X8-H Plus

The X8-H Plus is their current best offering specs wise.

I've been thinking about the MXIII. This is the link I need, right? Paypal, then wait for customs - don't use Parcel Motel, in this instance?

Using love2015 coupon code gets you €4.20 off (or more generally a 10% once off discount when you spend over the $30/60/80/100/150/200/300 intervals).

With Parcel Motel there's no provision for paying UK customs if the box is stopped - it will be sent back and safer (for purposes of risk calculation) to assume it will be lost, set against the very high probability of being caught by customs here for the €22.58 extra (on €67.75 - assuming free post).

Up to you if you want to take the gamble.

Its a great box, just recieved mine last week and its flawless playing 1080p over wireless.
My router is about 30 feet away, and the speedtest on the box is as good as on my ipad next to the router.

What ever issues the old x8-h had seem to have been sorted out on the plus.

The plus has a S812 chipset, the older one had an s802.

I think theres also an x8 plus, without the H which is a tad cheaper.

Hi all, please excuse my ignorance with this stuff but if I was to get the dvb-c version of the WeTek box, would this be able to play UPC channels? Or does it have to be a UPC box? I like the idea of having a kodi type box to run my normal TV through so I can integrate the stuff on my NAS etc. I currently have horizon and to be honest, I think it would have performed a lot better if they hadnt butchered so much of the xbmc stuff.

obviously been recommended before and I do use the Raspberri Pi to run my XBMC fine. but this might now suit most peoples needs - the Raspberri Pi 2 B which has a quad core CPU and 1gb Ram but still the sweet spot price of ~ €35! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/02/02/raspberry_pi_model_2/

I am still using the old version just fine though some skins can be a little laggy but video playback is perfect so I'd imagine the upgrade should run XBMC all the better :)

    Re M8 bashing :)

I have an OTT M8 Box running android with XBMC. I find it great for watching movies and shows, etc. Live sports - NO, its way too blurred, but I think this may be down to screen size and my broadband, max I get is 20Mbps. I dont use wifi as it right beside my router, and so use ethernet wired.

Would I recommend one? Yes, but there is disclaimer attached as I have never seen any other box let alone tried one. It cost €80 from the UK, ebay:

Ordered my MXQ S85 from GearBest on Friday (30/01). It shipped yesterday (02/02) but tracking no. has yet to go live.
Total cost after using Big Nellys discount code was €39.89. :)

    Do these things come pre-rooted?
Is there an "official" website where roms are released for this particular box?
Where do you guys get your ROMs/How do you choose them?
Anybody running stock with the latest official (14.1) Kodi installed?

Some products, such as Laptops, Mobile Phones, Digital cameras and Video Game consoles, are duty free.

These boxes play games-can they be classed as a games console? ;);)

    from the link above:
Import taxes explained in a nutshell

In general, import duty is a tax that the importer has to pay to bring foreign goods into his or her country. Import VAT (Value Added Tax) is a tax charged on imported goods and services.

Duty and VAT are calculated as a percentage of the value of the imported goods, consisting of the product value and the freight & insurance costs.

For importing into the UK, duty and VAT are normally due when a minimum value threshold of £15 is reached. Duty is not paid on consignments shipped within the EU.

Import duty rates vary depending on the type of goods; many goods are duty free. Relief from duty and VAT may apply in special cases. Also, in some cases additional duties may be charged, depending of the country of manufacture of the goods
