Question: Having trouble deciding whether to back out of Irish Literature and go for Post colonial literature instead which, though it has a group project, it's only 10 minutes and a 1,000 word reflection worth 25% as opposed to 25 mins with a 1,500 word piece worth 30% for Irish literature. Has anyone ever had Jack Fennell as a grader? What's is he like. Yianna's gone on sabbatical so he's running the module. My FYP supervisor is doing the Irish lit module so I wonder would it just be better to stick with that even if the assessment is more complicated? Ugh, this is giving me a headache. :(

Jack Fennell is a wonderful grader! And also a very sound lecturer! I once asked him for material for my FYP and it was e-mailed to me within 10 mins after class!

I got two A1's with him and found him very easy to approach. A lot of people like his grading style :)

You wouldn't happen to have the syllabus for Irish Lit would you? It's not on sulis dammit..

Maybe your essay was just of a really high standard!:)
Ah! Now I'm thinking I should have switched to Post Colonial literature! I can't make up my mind and I don't have much time left to decide. I thought I had made up my mind to stick with Irish lit but now after what you said I'm reconsidering it again! I'm so confused! I kept thinking I've gut feelings to go one way or another.
What do you need to know? I'll write down the stuff for you but you could as easily email Tina O'Toole and have her send you an emailed copy, up to you!:)
    Reading list is:
    Ronan Bennett, The Catastrophist
    Emma Donoghue, The Room
    Anne Enright, The Gathering
    Joseph O'Connor, Ghost light
    Poetry
    Paula Meehan, Painting Room
    Short story collections
    Colin Barrett, Young Skins
Claire Keegan, Walk the blue fields
    Edna O'Brien, Saints and Sinners

    Assessment is as follows:
Research project and seminar leadership - 30% (Consists of a group presentation 25 minutes long + 1,500 word piece to be written)
Seminar attendance and participation - 20%
Major Essay - 50% (word count not specified)
Anything else you want me to get from the sheet? Oh, Maggie O'Neil and Jack Fennell are the tutors.

IN COMPARSION Post-colonial literature is structured like this:
    Presentation - 25% (10 minutes +1,000 word critical response)
    Midterm paper - 25% (1,200)
    Final paper - 40% (2,000)
    Class attendance - 10%

Do you see my problem! One has my FYP supervisor running it but the other has a much simpler assessment :(

The 5th is for the provisional exam results, right?

Yup, which is really annoying since the closing date for applying for a scholarship to work in a lab during the summer closes on the 4th and I need my results/QCA when applying for it -.-

Can anyone tell me where GEMS0016 is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 747 ✭✭✭Aragneer

Final Semester is stupid...Lecturers seem to forget that you have a lot on your plate already as a 4th year and give you the most homework ever! I've been up to my eyeballs in German and haven't even had a chance to start editing my FYP, due in Week 6 :/

Can anyone tell me where GEMS0016 is?

As far as I can remember its the room just at the bottom of the stairs when you go into the med school

    Fair enough actually.
I think the 'I'm only spending 5 grand on a house with heating and your own bathrooms. poor me', is pretty sad though!

Plassey is fairly ****e compared to Dromroe in fairness. And if I had set myself on a place, I'd be pretty annoyed if it was gone so quickly. I don't know why Plassey is the only alternative though.

Sound like spoilt babies to the majority. There are thousands of students living in literal **** holes around UL in comparison.
