Seriously, are we not all tired of the Welbeck debate, as the saying goes, "the proof of the pudding will be in the eating."

    You're right.

I brought Nani back from loan in Football Manager. Became an ansolute KEY player in my side. Player of the Season. 30+ goals. Knocked Di Maria out of the side. #footballmanagerisrealtomedamnit

the poster asked for the difference between a striker and forward, I wasn't sure if he was messing or not

    but welbeck did make it!!

if playing and scoring in a European cup game away to real Madrid is not making the grade at united, nothing is

Yikes, some people really tend to gloss over things with a bit of Nostalgia.

Welbeck was not muck but he was not UTD quality either. He's maybe creepping into a top four team.

As for doing well in an away game to Madrid being a mark of him being top level all I can say to day is are you serious?

One game does not define a player. Welbeck was terrible against lesser team in the EPL and toried against top four teams. Just because he upped his game away in Spain doesn't mean he is a highest level player.

In that away leg he had a dog and leash job to do on Alonso and did it well. His goal was a header from a corner where Madrids defence switched off. Ramos was marking him and didn't even jump with him. It was an unchallenged header.

To say he's class based on one match is very silly.

I never said that, it was said earlier he hasn't made top level and I just said he had pointing out that game

A forward player can be a very good player without scoring lots of goals.
Sure Welbeck didnt/doent have a great scoring record but its being incredibly selective and willingly ignoring other aspects of his game that contributed greatly to Utd when called upon.

Sure I get the argument that he doesnt score enough goals but people are putting forward a narrative as if hes a fox in the box, a goal poacher who isnt going the job and contributing nothing else.

Also not agreeing with him being sold doesnt automatically mean you think he should be in the team every game, a presumption a few seem to be making on here.

I get that point. Well with people who think Wellbeck would have been a good squad player. And I think he would have.

But 16m is good business for a player that in my view, wasn't unique or special.

I'm not exactly lit alight with Wilson. There is good reports and stuff on him from underage level, but Wellbeck had similarly glowing report cards.

but Van Gaal has openly said he merits Wilsons pace, and other individuals have commented he is a very composed finisher. While I'm not singing his praises( early days) I've seen enough to see the logic behind getting 16m for Wellbeck, and hoping Wilson might develop into something.

    Oh ffs.

Rooney in his pomp marauding at defences, Ronaldo flanking him at full pelt on his left with his amazing hair, Van Nistelroy weaving into the box, probably guess that Nani was outside on the right.

What the hell happened to our fast, electric breaks and attacks.

    That video depresses me

If that's all you had said originally, not many would have disagreed with you. But you exaggerated, both in saying that people were fawning over him and in saying that his form for United was garbage.

I ****ing love Ruud. First name I had on my jersey, too. Screaming Van Nistlerooooyyyyyy as you scored a screamer on the street. Fantastic.

Wrote so many responses to this, sounded a bit blowing my own trumpet.

But basically one good game does not equal top level.

I don't think that's exaggeration and I'll stand by the comments I made.

I found him to be garbage and not meriting a place above Rooney or RVP, and there is fawning over him. Granted I might be taking that praise over from what UK fans and media say about him and brandishing it here, and that might be unfair.

but I don't think it's exaggerating to say Wellbeck was not a good United player and that Van Gaal and the club received surprising critique for what to me appeared a really good deal for a 4th choice striker.

Have I ever shared what has to be one of the most unusual artifcats of jerseys?

A blue United away jersey with Cryuff :D

Pretty sure what I did on the street wearing that was better then anything he did on the pitch also : /

Well we don't agree. I'll be interested to see if you stay consistent now that you've set the bar so high for what counts as above garbage performance.

That's not much better really depending on what you mean. Are you talking about making it to the top level as a player or playing in a top level match? one top level match?

A top level player is one with a consistantly high level of preformance against highest level opposition and the rest. Welbeck certainly wouldn't be classed a top level player but he played in some top level matches.

Cleverly played against Madrid, as did Mignolet, Kolo Touré, Manquillo, Moreno, Joe Allen, Borini and Lallana. None of which are top level players.

Kolo Toure was a fantastic player, one of the invincibles and a champions league finalist remember. He certainly was a top level pleayer, where he is now should not be how he is remembered, and he certainly shouldn't be grouped with dross like Cleverley or Allen.

Also, this thread has been dire today.

Your right. I stand corrected. I just went on a naming Liverpool players spree and lost the run of myself.
