Yikes, some people really tend to gloss over things with a bit of Nostalgia.

Welbeck was not muck but he was not UTD quality either. He's maybe creepping into a top four team.

As for doing well in an away game to Madrid being a mark of him being top level all I can say to day is are you serious?

One game does not define a player. Welbeck was terrible against lesser team in the EPL and toried against top four teams. Just because he upped his game away in Spain doesn't mean he is a highest level player.

In that away leg he had a dog and leash job to do on Alonso and did it well. His goal was a header from a corner where Madrids defence switched off. Ramos was marking him and didn't even jump with him. It was an unchallenged header.

To say he's class based on one match is very silly.

I'm not exactly lit alight with Wilson. There is good reports and stuff on him from underage level, but Wellbeck had similarly glowing report cards.

but Van Gaal has openly said he merits Wilsons pace, and other individuals have commented he is a very composed finisher. While I'm not singing his praises( early days) I've seen enough to see the logic behind getting 16m for Wellbeck, and hoping Wilson might develop into something.

If that's all you had said originally, not many would have disagreed with you. But you exaggerated, both in saying that people were fawning over him and in saying that his form for United was garbage.

That's not much better really depending on what you mean. Are you talking about making it to the top level as a player or playing in a top level match? one top level match?

A top level player is one with a consistantly high level of preformance against highest level opposition and the rest. Welbeck certainly wouldn't be classed a top level player but he played in some top level matches.

Cleverly played against Madrid, as did Mignolet, Kolo Touré, Manquillo, Moreno, Joe Allen, Borini and Lallana. None of which are top level players.
