I see that the new RTE2 HD logo has been updated on the Saorview Website page named 'What is Saorview'.

I see that the new RTE2 HD logo has been updated on the Saorview Website page named 'What is Saorview'.

    Done last week IIRC.

Also noticed last week the "Switch to Saorview" link (coverage checker etc.) simply reloads the existing page, not very for anyone looking for the coverage checker.

The ratings for RTE 2 have not improved and they are now showing 3 year old mock the week episodes on monday nights.

Terrible scheduling. Mock The Week mainly involves UK politics and main news of the week in was broadcast. Broadcasting it 3 years later on RTE2 makes no sense.

I remember when Monday nights on RTE2 used to be great. Back then, Top 30 Hits, Friends, Father Ted, The Panel, Scare At Bedtime, Men Behaving Badly etc.. Now the Monday schedule is devoid of any ideas

Yep, they’re still struggling for identity alright. Personally, I like the new idents etc but I’m still confused by the scheduling. The main Channels all have pre-defined time slots so you have a fairly good idea of the type of program that’ll be on before even checking, RTE2 could have a nature doc at 6pm one day and an American sitcom at 6pm the next – they need some sort of continuity.

With the RTE archives at their disposal I don’t know why they don’t pepper the schedule with old shows – whatever about the quality, people will still tune in because of the nostalgia. If I heard Wanderly Wagon was on tonight (or even Leave it Mrs O’Brien) I’d give it a look for sure. Also, bring back the Last Picture Show and show bona-fide classics a couple of times a week (or even nightly) with the usual intros, analysis and even (where possible) making-of docs etc…

    Oh, and resurrect Nighthawks

They really need to think outside the box here

I still can't understand why in this day and age that the Australian soaps are not broadcast on RTE as close to the Australian showing. From just looking at the episode on RTE tomorrow, the episode was shown 10th November in Aus. That's a huge break of 2 months. No wonder the ratings have fallen so much over the past few years.

They cannot show any episodes ahead of Channel 5 in the UK.

Could they not come to some sort of an agreement between them all, either get Channel 5 to persuade them to air closer to the date, or RTE to offer a bit more money. Find it so odd that Channel 5, a channel which is not freely available to everyone in Ireland, has such a hold over how RTE can broadcast a programme.

Don't Channel 5 pay a substantial amount towards the making of the show? If that is correct then they have every right to insist on premiering rights in Europe. It is only UPC and Saorview viewers that don't have Channel 5 anyway.

Ah ok, fair enough. After reading up about it, seems like Channel 5 hold the cards. Money talks I guess.

Piece in the indo today with Glen Killane, the station's managing director, saying that the amount of repeats on the channel is too high - with the Simpsons, Father Ted and Reality Bites being the focus of the piece.

RTÉ 2 is a mess. The new lick of paint they have given it hasn't helped. In fact, it may have made it worse.

It has went from a channel I would have watched regularly enough to one I don't watch at all now. How many more times can they repeat Father Ted and in a prime time slot too. Beggars belief.

    A quote from that article:
RTE2 has been a stellar success since we repositioned it. It's loud and it's brash and it has a public service heart.

Is he actually serious? A stellar failure more like.

It says a lot when your 4th most watched programme of the week is a 20 year old sitcom from another country that has been repeated to death and is practically on every week since the 90's!

Not everyone has access to Channel 5 nor do they have access to all UK channels... so RTÉ is totally in its right to air such programming... I do agree tho they should reduce such content where possible particularly programming on free-to-air UK channels....but keep in mind:

RTÉ regularly air programming way ahead of UK channels, meanwhile UK channels are considered outside this state which means RTÉ will purchase Republic of Ireland rights to serve the Irish public. UK channels serve UK audiences and UK interest, the fact these Uk channels are available in Ireland makes no difference to such UK broadcasters we are only blip on their broadcasting policy in fact we don't exist among some broadcasters (see BBC/ Channel 4 weather)

Believe me, Channel 4 does know we exist and has made a lot of money off knowing we exist! Uniquely among the UK terrestrial channels they clear Irish rights to all their programmes (except some US imports) which is why we can watch 4OD when we cannot watch BBC iPlayer or ITV Player.

Father Ted has been their biggest hit of the past twenty years and during the time they had Big Brother there was almost always an Irish contestant.

Those figures are staggeringly bad for such a prominent channel .. They need to change things around fast, the new look is even dreadful. They should use some archive stuff from RTÉ's catalogue (Raw, Bachelors Walk etc.) .. They need to stop this obsession with traveller programmes too - that's stuff on TV3.. RTÉ should always have a bit of class.

Judging by Elmo's stats, Gotham may well jump straight to No. 1 in next week's chart - it's generally had good reviews, so should have staying power.

On a broader note, it seems that all UTVI's entry has done is merely cement RTE One's dominance, and split the remaining audience three-ways. Certainly, it seems unlikely that both UTV and TV3 will still be broadcasting in 18 months time, and one hardly thinks the RWC will bring in sufficient revenue to keep the Ballymount meters ticking over.

Laura Slattery wrote this interesting piece today regarding RTE2's value and comes to the conclusion that sports are its main value. I'd agree to an extent but maybe not for same reasons as her. For me, the value in RTE2 being there to show sports is that it can provide blanket coverage for these big tournaments while RTE1 continues to show its normal programming. If RTE had only one channel that simply wouldn't be possible - you couldn't have a situation during a World Cup where news was abandoned, for instance.

Ya Irish Ads to make revenue for a British channel who do not invest in Ireland very logical...

RTE has 4 channels: RTE 1, RTE 2, RTE News Now, and RTE Jr/RT 1+1.

They could, if allowed by the politicians, use those channels differently.

In case nobody saw it when RTE2 broadcast it the first time 20 years ago, when TV3 ran it 2 times, when 3e ran it around 6 times, when Channel 4 ran it 20 times, when E4 ran it 120 times, and when Comedy Central is running it 1200 times - RTE2 are repeating Friends from next Tuesday at 7.30pm from the beginning.

Does pull the viewers in though. There's a reason that the royalties from that show are still in the millions.
