Does pull the viewers in though. There's a reason that the royalties from that show are still in the millions.

perhaps for a niche service like 3e/E4/Comedy Central

Wonder if they are just showing the old versions they had before or if they got new HD copies like Comedy Central did.

They are showing Friends every day at 7.30pm by the looks of it, I initially thought it was Tuesday only so it would have run for over 4 years to get all 236 episodes in. It will run for 47 weeks if they manage every week day.

The adverts show episodes in a 16:9 frame so I'd assume from that it will be HD.

Sports will stop it every now and then

I can't see it pulling in any more viewers than the programmes that they show there already. The show has been screened to death thanks to E4 and Comedy Central. RTE2 should be out looking for new ideas & programmes, and not ones that started 21 years ago.

In case nobody saw it when RTE2 broadcast it the first time 20 years ago, when TV3 ran it 2 times, when 3e ran it around 6 times, when Channel 4 ran it 20 times, when E4 ran it 120 times, and when Comedy Central is running it 1200 times - RTE2 are repeating Friends from next Tuesday at 7.30pm from the beginning.

and they even repeat them again on saturday afternoons in case anybody missed them

Oh dear. I just thought they were episodes being continued on from midweek. This is really going to drag on for a few years.

Taking a look at last weeks ratings shows how much trouble they're in. Prime time programming like Gotham, Person Of Interest and Devious Maids fail to get into the Top 20, and the 20th programme has only 50,000 viewers.

Friends didn't make it into the list either - proving that their decision to show a programme that has been shown numerous times on Irish TV didn't really need to be shown again - especially at such a peak time.

It also proves the lie sprouted on this board "Give us HD and we will come "given that RTE are showing the new HD masters

Who has being saying this? I'd have though most on here view HD as an improvement nothing more. Content remains King.

If that's even true, it was most likely meaning *NEW* HD content, not another showing of a 20 year old sitcom that's been repeated to death.

Just read from the Irish DM TV guide that the RTE 9 O'Clock News on Saturday Night will be on RTE2 for 30 minutes (or maybe longer) to cover updated results from the two referendums and the by-election in Carlow-Killkenny taking place from tomorrow.

This is to allow the Eurovision SC Final go uninterrupted on Saturday Night on RTE One.

I think RTÉ have given up on RTÉ NN, they need to get it on Sky

I think they just need to get it!

A news channel is supposed to relay news, not just simulcast it.

They have a channel that cost a lot in transmission fees but no audience.

There may not be enough Irish news to fill a rolling channel, but they could follow Euronews's example, and fill time with pre-recorded in-depth reports, arts pieces, etc.

It is not just the lack of Irish news. They have cut away from live news feeds, such as Dail proceedings to simulcast the 9 O'Clock News which is already on Saorview (and all other platforms). There is no excuse for that. They have no journalists attached to the channel and no budget by the look of it. But then again, they are not allowed to broadcast adverts and therefore to generate funds to pay for journalism.

They should do it properly or not at all.

It's not just about a rolling news service from an Irish prespective. Watch BBC News 24 or Sky News on any given day as see how they do their so called rolling news.

During an hour when both channels editors have no breaking news the news is dotted with repeat showings of interviews from earlier in the day. BBC News does this right through out the day.

Newsreader: Earlier I spoke with the shawdow secetary here's what she had to say....
Newsreader: Now a look at the latest cinema releases with .... (cut to repeat)
Newsreader: With all the latest technology news its Click ... (cut to repeat) and so on.

RTÉ could even provided repeats as the do now but with a bit of variety.

    Monday Night on News Now

    6:01 6:1 News
7:00 News Feed (what isn't it broadcast on the channel)
    7:05 The Sunday Game Repeat
8:00 News Feed (Why isn't it broadcast on the channel)
8:05 The Week In Politics Repeat
    9:00 Nine News
    9:30 Claire Byrne Live
    10:10 The Works Repeat
    11:00 Live News
11:10 RTÉ Reports from Nine News, 6:1 etc
12:00 Hourly news with pictures from RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM and Lyric FM.
    12:05 Clair Byrne Repeat
    12:35 The Works Repeat
1:00 Hourly news with pictures from RTÉ Radio
    1:05 The Sunday Game Repeat

    and so on.
