:D I heard something like that...an accusation or something...but did he actually get done?

Well he was charged and there was more than one incident if I remember correctly.

    Mrs Doyle: Who? Your mother!?

So Ben has just signed over the Arches and decides it's a good idea to try and Kiss Jay, not sure what the writers were thinking there.

Hope Phil gives Max a few slaps when he gets out.

I am surprised at Jay not telling Abi the truth that Ben is gay and tried to kiss him, she probably wont believe him but does he hate her now that much, the went out for a long while he must still have some feelings for her and has he made a move on Lola yet, declared his love for her, isn't that why he dumped Abi

Ben making a move on Jay was ewwwwww and so wrong they are like brothers ffs

3 ladies after Stan Carter :p

Ben's character may actually be Bisexual rather than GAY. We saw this side of him in the past before he went to jail when Ben Mitchell's character was played by the previous actor. This side of him has yet to be fully explored as the writers seems to just occassionally cover his dilemma or struggle about his relationships with girls/guys. Before tonight we last saw a taste of Ben's confused feelings for Johnny Carter when he was feeling low one night on the square.

The other thing I would say is this: Blood is thicker than water where family and siblings are concerned. I recall Jay had a completely different father who died and he had nobody left to raise him. Billy Mitchell took him in and somehow Jay ended up under Phil Mitchell's roof. Jay shows a very tender & sensitive side in the way he treated Ben's bleeding facial wounds. The two have been under pressure numerous times and had to keep secrets quiet in the past.

Maybe Jay and Ben could end up in another intimate scene given that Jay chose to keep their awkward moment silent after Ben jumped in about Max stealing The Arches Garage off Phil. Johnny Carter and Danny Pennant (other characters who played gay/bi roles) are now gone from EastEnders now so who knows if Ben & Jay end up in another initimate twist with Jay exploring things now that he knows what Ben really feels about him? Could you imagine how Phil Mitchell would react to this one once he is freed from the nick!

Making Jay gay just for a story would be an awful decision and a joke. I would not enjoy that story at all.

It seems to have come a bit out of the blue tonight alright - unless they are just starting to develop something between these two guys slowly over a period of time.

Ben and Jay have history with the whole Heather being killed by Ben storyline and have probably come to trust each other with some very difficult dilemmas in past. As Abby is no longer with Jay one wonders if this scene was a one-off or will there be further attempts? Who knows in soap-land, anything can happen these days?

It wasn't reciprocal. This is the point i am making. Ben can try and kiss who he wants but if they suddenly make jay gay to give Ben a fella i'll be rather p1$$ed off.

I imagine the scene was just to set in motion Ben's coming out. At least i hope that is all.

I trust y friends and family. Doesn't mean in tough times together, i will hop on them.

Yeah but in real life, it is not reciprocal in various forms of relationship either. There is always an element of risk if and when one person gets crossed wires or misreads a good friendship for "more than just friendship" signal. The person who gets it all wrong cannot then undo or turn the clock back on what may have just happened so; now you get the whole awkward feeling and it often destroys friendships in the end. It happens between heterosexual persons all the time in life but is not just unique to male+female.

I just think Ben is so messed up from having grown up with an emotionally detached alcoholic father, abusive stepmother & overbearing grandmother that he doesn't know how to react when anyone treats him with kindness or tenderness & so just jumps them!

And you know, I think your synopsis on Ben and his background could well be what the storyline writers at EastEnders are trying to convey here.

Phil Mitchell alcoholic, bully, thinks with his fists first, difficult relationship with his father we are often told. Phil has a relationship with many women and one woman happened to be Kathy Beale (Ian Beale's mother) and Ben is the result of their relationship. Phil often in/out of the nick and was never top of the class at school and drinks to forget about all the bad moments of his childhood. Ben inherits this confused social upbringing and dares to tell the truth in case his father laughs at him and bullys him! History of another bad father & son rocky relationship.

i'm not sure what you said has anything to do with me saying it wasnt reciprocal!! you went off on a tangent! I very much doubt that Jay will start growing any feelings towards Ben and as I said I wouldnt be happy with such a story.in fact Jay would possibly be the one person who knows bens messed up issues so probably the last to go near him. That and the fact that theitr relationship is a brotherly one. It was just another sensationalised way to set in motion a new plot. Its clear to me tbh that this is the commencement of Ben coming out, whether gay, bisexual etc. The kiss was just a plot device. The issue with Ben is his father, most of his problems stem back to him and him being afraid to confront his feelings is due to his fathers already stated non acceptance of such a scenario. Jay will either help him or disclose his sexuality to, perhaps, Abi.

I thought Ben had already come out that's why everyone was surprised by him and Lola and then him and Abi. Max was definitely against it because he was gay. I know Ben said he was just confused before but surely his family and friends aren't that blind or stupid.

That being said I must admit to feeling sorry for the character. He's a messed up little boy who just wants approval and love.

Good post. I'd add that if he doesn't get help with his mental issues he'll hurt someone very badly sooner or later.

That is why I feel no sympathy for Abi in this situation. Everyone else, bar Phil, are aware Ben is gay or, at the very least very confused, but she's choosing to ignore it entirely because it suits her to.

She's another one damaged by her unstable parents & is craving a stable loving relationship but the self-destructive trait that seems to run in that family makes her go for Ben,who quite obviously is going to provide the exact opposite!

Eastenders has to be the best soap over the past year both storyline wise and acting wise.

I suppose you're right. Lauren went through her fair share of unsuitable boyfriends before she got with Peter. It's Abi's time to shine now!

Peter was also Lauren's first boyfriend though.

But she wasn't quite as messed up then plus they were only 14.

After he broke her and Peter up. She was fairly well adjusted when she initially started going out with him.

You are entitled to your own personal views and I respect you have a different opinion. I would have no secret inside knowledge to storylines/plots apart from what is sometimes put out in the media to generate publicity for the show. I have no clue what direction they are taking Jay's character as this still seems unclear. However; when you speak of Ben's coming out - we had this whole Gay/Bi issue with Ben in the past which has me wondering is Jay just the latest weak point or do the writers intend to return to it again at some point. Johnny Carter was someone he last tried to snog but he has left Walford and now he has fallen for Jay - what's the difference? - they have both had to keep very serious confidential matters to themselves so; is this an angle? Like I said before, remember Jay and Ben are not biological brothers in the plot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,573 ✭✭✭emanresu esrever

Your posts are very serious!!! You are overthinking! Its a soap forum, most of these stories don't deserve deep reflection!
Anyway the difference is Johnny was gay, but Jay has shown no signs of being gay. So just because this messed up "non-biological" brother of his kissed him, doesn't mean he is gay. If anyone was going to make Jay question his sexuality, it wont be Ben. Indeed the secrets and closeness of them is what would deter such a scenario significantly. Ben, a messed up, confused, angry, sometimes psychotic demonised kid that he lives with and has seen all his problems. I dont think they even have a friendship, just affiliated through family ties. Never been any sign of humour between them. It would be a terrible story.
I really think you are overthinking this and I hope you are wrong!!!! (no offence, I mean I hope your thoughts on a Gay Jay are wrong).

Ps, Ben hasn't "came out". He has not made any declaration to anyone that he is gay. He acted on impulse with Johnny and Jay but has refuted any accusations that he is gay. So when I say this may be the commencement of him coming out, I mean of him accepting his sexuality, whatever it is. I think the kissing of Jay was a plot device to knock this in motion!

ps, i think the Ben character is great. very finely tuned at the moment, with the psychological issues going on. I maintain that the drastic changes in his personality, manner, etc have sometimes been extreme and a little insulting to long term viewers but he is complex and one of the most interesting on the square, far moreso than the Carters imo. can see him being involved in some screwed up antics in next few years. Question is how many more recasts will he go through!

He will head out for milk one day and Lenny Henry will return with the glasses and no one will bat an eyelid. "oh alright Ben" !
