Boards is fumbling in the greasy till

Everything that you first discover is "alive and exciting" but after doing it for several years, it eventually becomes "boring".

While at the same time some new posters arrive and find it "alive and exciting", it's all in the mind!

A newer, younger, sexier model comes along and Boards seems drab and boring. The new one makes you feel excited because it's fresh and different. You try it for a bit, you feel young and alive. Then you get tired of its energy. You miss Boards and its comfortable predictability. So you come back and promise yourself you will be happy with Boards.

I don't know, when I signed up a few years ago, there used to be a warning post at the start of every forum stating that no one was to discuss a certain company and their activities.

    Anyone who did was banned!

It required an unrelated court judgement relating to accountability to lift the warning. So Boards is probably freer now.

Which company was this.. or are you at liberty to say?

Boards was way better pre 2010.

Should that not be pre Sept 2008 ;)

That's true for every other poster too...and rightly so. Without naming the other place you can see Irish websites where anything goes. Just a name calling contest. Boards used to have an insult forum with special rules and it was hilarious because no one took it seriously. When people take things seriously then they look to law. Boards has to be careful. I say that as someone who has been in the wars over the years. There are bigger changes than modding behind the sense of less energy around here.

Boards is like that new housing estate that was buillt in the nineties, New families with young kids who played football out on the street til half past eleven and knockadolly the days you were on night shift. They threw stones, broke windows, called each other names and fought a lot. They've all grown up now and have PhDs.

Its not just boards but society as a whole. One is not allowed air strong opinions anymore for fear of upsetting the feelings of the pc brigade. We will just have to adapt I'm afraid.

What I do love is that most of the complaining is by people with a lot of posts but join dates only in the last couple of years. Don't you think there's a chance the constant closing of accounts and Re-regging might also kill a place a little (my excuse is I lost mine in the big hack)

Indeed, Ireland has wholly embraced the sanitised, bland group-think mindset that is politically correctness - we even go so far as to make a sport out of it in efforts to prove how MORE PC we are than other people!

It was probably only inevitable in a country that doesn't reward "individualism" or "progress" - instead these things are looked on with resentment and begrudgery and efforts made to belittle it by others. If you don't follow the herd, you're even more out in the cold now than ever!

But with this safety in uniformity, comes a complete shirking of any kind of responsibility or accountability. Everything is "someone else's" fault and fixing it is also left to "someone else". Stuff like social media (and now even the regular media) feed this and pump more nonsense at us (like the latest "selfie" from some nobody) to keep us blindly content and distracted from the real problems we have.

It's no wonder that those who have the chance get out while the rest of us who don't have that opportunity or are tied by commitments are left to quietly fume at the devolution of our "modern" society

Absolutely. Our Taoiseach is a prime example when on the European or world stage. Please sir,Please mam,we are ever so modern and accepting of all so may I have another gold star or pat on the head.Incapable of taking a stance on anything.Even on a national level the first reaction to any issue is,what would/did Britain or America or Australia do on this?.

I don't post much. Either you get yellow/red carded due to made-up-on-the-spot rules, posts get edited or the thread gets closed. Not worth making the effort to contribute, so I just read mostly. Would be nicer if there wasn't a 100 different sets of rules for a 100 different sub-forums, and if moderation was consistent and less heavy handed.

    Case-in-point:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=93683786#post93683786

Nothing in the rules against posting a link to a news story and then asking a question in the thread title.

I'm not arguing against the decision to close the thread, nor asking for it to be reopened. I'm just pointing it out as example.

I often start threads using a news story as a starter for 10, most of the time they either die a death or a good discussion follows, but the odd one does get binned!

Edit: just looking at the current AH threads and most of them appear to have been started with a news story.

Taking a stance against open immigration is seen by some as akin to being a card carrying neo-Nazi member at times. Then a thread where people are trying to argue why they believe in tighter controls inevitably gets closed as these views are too controversial for a certain breed of AH folk.

And I am saying this as a non-posting observer to these sort of threads, not as a poster in these threads.

That's an interesting take on things, what I saw in that thread was a lot of views that were openly or borderline racist and insults being hurled at any poster who wasn't prepared to join the anti-immigrant witch-hunt.

Describing it as an "anti-immigration witch hunt" is what I am talking about; tarring anti-immigration with the racist brush when of course there are racist views but there are also non-racist, anti-immigration views. In the same way that the absolute pro-immigration view is ignorant to economics and practicality. But this extreme is overlooked whereas a borderline racist (not actually racist) view apparently leads to thread closures.

A lot of the posts in this sound very whiney and a bit of a moan, on AH its boards is too Pc while in Irish economy threads someone is arguing that boards is too right wing. Boards is managing to annoy everyone the left the right and those just looking for a laugh.

Do you mean the thread yesterday in which English defence league videos were posted, along with anti-Semitic links, violent threats or references to people who allow immigrants into the country, personal insults against other posters, references to the New Workd Order controlling immigration policies, and comments about too many immigrants of different races 'invading' Europe? All in the space of two hours.

Remember to use examples like those if you want to complain about mods being too PC.

The above is an example of being unable to separate racism from a stance which ultimately agrees with the main point of the racists but for different reasons. I'm not quoting, nor referring to specific threads just making a general point. But I didn't actually read that thread you were talking about.

All in the space of two hours.

If I remember, it was you posting EDL links and trying to blame someone who didn't, whilst asking this question here:
Do you support the English Defence League? Are you sure you want anti-Catholic, loyalist affiliated thugs hold cans of bavaria and screaming about 'Mooslums' marching through Dublin or Cork or Belfast?

But not before you asked two other posters, repeatedly, the following:
Apologies for asking too many questions but just so we can pin down what our values are so we can contrast and compare:
Do you think there's anything wrong with mixed race marriage in Ireland Are those children Irish in your view?
Do you support gay adoption and marriage?
Do you support increased support and intake of Christian asylum seekers from places where they're being persecuted by Islamists like Nigeria?
Would you consider yourself a feminist, or support feminism?

Not to worry, you were not sanctioned for trolling, baiting, personalising the debate or repeatedly trying to derail the thread and having constructed your super sized strawman and manfully shredding it for the benefit your pals, the moderator, shut the thread down, blaming stormfront.

    How are you not pleased?

IMO, its a perfect example of what's wrong with Boards, why people think it's PC to the extreme with erratic moderation and why it will continue to decline.

I know these threads crop up fairly frequently, but I do think AH has changed in tone quite a lot over the past while. It's become a bit less zany and funny and a lot more angry.

The incessant whinging about the supposed 'PC brigade' has started to make this forum feel like the comments section on a Daily Mail article. At least 'yore ma' was occasionally funny.

The public fora in boards are a training ground to see who is worthy. The select few are taken and put into the private forums where the crack is mighty. Everyone else is left out in the cold wilderness. If you bribe the mods of secret fora with enough coke and hookers they might let you see where the real life on boards is

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,372 ✭✭✭reprise

Hah! It's my fault for asking posters to explain themselves because they ended up describing their abhorrent opinions!

The problem with Boards is that there's a large collection of people who want to say anything, about any subject, but at the same time are too sensitive for the backlash.

    Strawmen don't have feelings......
