Hey Happygoose - Thats an impressive set of times for the year....that 10 miler was a class run and when you look at how competitive the numbers are across the range its all the more impressive....super stuff really.

Glad to hear you are staying at the shorter stuff this year....gives me time to play catch up as you defo kicked on to another level during the summer.

But still some unfinished business in Ballycotten if I remember rightly.....are you not tempted to make the trip down.......you will be needing a t-shirt to go that mug you got last year !!!!!

PS -I have that Woolly Hat from the Waterford Half for you...will drop it around to P.H over the weekend...so you can get it next time you see him.

Good man DT! Nice run in Waterford! PM me your mail address.

Ballycotton is too far in every sense! Leinster Masters is that weekend afaik you me and PH should go, he turns Master in February. All getting old!

    I'll get a top 100 t-shirt down there, someday!

Just updating my 5k time to finish me for the year. A little disappointed that I couldn't lower my 800m and mile times but that will be a major target for next year. Hoping to hit all the numbers from 400m-10k next year, well done everyone!

Added 3K and updated 5K. Left it too late to get the mile which was the only other one I could have realistically hoped for.

Just updated my only time to be marginally more respectable. I'll hopefully make a better attempt at the list in 2015, as long as the goalposts aren't moved (too much).

My 5 mile time was looking like a WR.

Just thought I'd throw this out there, after reading what has been suggested on the Women's 10 Round Numbers thread. This challenge is hugely skewed towards distance runners. Is there really a need for a 5 mile when there is already a 5km and a 10km which covers that aspect of running already? Would a 200m be a better choice to bring a bit more balance to the tables?

What would your time be? 30 would be on the easy side and 20 would be a National Record. I feel the 30 minute 5m offers a sterner challenge between the 5k and 10k times. 6 minute miles for 5 miles is a nice round target and it's a classic distance in running. It offers a tougher goal for those who have gone well under 40/10k and 20/5k.

I agree though, the table is skewed towards distance runners.

Yeh it would only work if the Round Number requirement was removed (like with the women's tables where they have 12 min 3km). In that case I'd go with sub 27. Just a suggestion anyway.

I think a dedicated thread for shorter distances would be a better option rather than messing with this thread. We could do 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 1 mile, 3,000, 5,000m (that's 8 right??). Or maybe we could take out the 5,000m and replace it with 3k steeple to try and encourage someone outside of Ecoli and Timmaay to give it a go!

What about hurdles if you're making it shorter distances? Could make it up to 10 (and some!) then...

It would never work. Kurt tried a T&F challenge a few years ago and there was a very poor response to it. The only reason people here are trying the 400m these days is because it is part of the overall Big 10 challenge. Linking shorter events to longer events is the only way people will see the relevance of trying them.

The challenge is skewed towards distance runners because that is what we have around here. Only 5 of us did the 400m this year so it's unlikely there would be more doing the 200m. Not a big fan of the 5 mile myself but there were more than twice as many who completed it v's the 400.

True, but the 400 is a tougher target than the 5 mile, particularly for long distance runners. There were those who tried the 400 but didn't hit the target. And then there are those who don't bother because they know they wouldn't hit it.

Instead of trying to think of round numbers for every conceivable distance and event, and trying to work out times for each one that are challenging but achievable, and creating a single table that is fifteen columns wide... Perhaps just use the 'Best of 201x' thread?

At anything from 1-2 hours notice!

That's good going, way tougher than the 10 round numbers.

I think there's a split in those on here -athletics types and road running types and because of this separate tables would work best. I think the targets in the athletics table should be slightly more challenging as you might have more established/experienced athletes at those events. They should be achievable enough though to encourage anyone to have a pot at them. Maybe the 400H and SC can wait 'till 2016 :)

I'd disagree. T&F challenge was done in 2011 and only about 5 of us bothered with it. It won't work. The whole point of putting the 400m into the 10 Round Numbers was to increase participation on this forum in that event, and it has worked to a certain extent (though still not enough). That's why I was suggesting replacing one of the distance events with a 200m. If somebody would want to complete the challenge they would be forced into trying 2 sprint events, not just one.

Yeah but should we be forcing people to have to compete in sprint events? TBH, I'm a 1500m runner mostly and even I probably wouldn't bother with a 200m, it's just too far way from anything I ever do in training. I'm not going to seek out a 200m race just to tick a box (and risk injuring myself in the process). I don't see the issue with starting another thread for T+F challenge, who cares if only 5 or 6 people take part?

Here's a suggestion I put up on that previous T&F Challenge Thread. Sadly there were no replies to it, so I binned the idea.

While this has been a good idea IMO, it unfortunately, though perhaps not surprisingly, has not taken off. So for 2013 I was thinking that perhaps the following format could work better and would be more inclusive. Rather than it being a strictly T&F competition, it could instead be a "Who is the best boards runner 2013" or something to that effect. That means only flat running events. No hurdles, no steeple, no field, no multi-event, no walk.

Only championship distances can count with the following 8 events being available: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m and Marathon.

To be able to win the competition you need to reach the following criteria:

    1) 4 events will score for you based on IAAF points (1 sprint, 1 distance, and next best 2, as per below)
    2) You must compete in one sprint event (100m, 200m, 400m)
    3) You must compete in one distance event (1500m, 5000m, 10000m, Marathon)
    4) The 800m is in the middle and doesn't fall under either category so is not compulsory, but of course can be used to score points
    5) The 5000m, 10000m and Marathon can be run in a road race, but the other events must be completed on the track.
    6) You must compete in 2 track events to be eligable to win (2 of your 4 scoring events must be track)
    7) Track events can be completed as time trials but time must be added on for hand times of sprint events.

Hopefully something like this can get more people into track but also open up the competition to the masses (those who run road races). By having the criteria of having to complete a sprint it will get road runners to have a shot at track, while having the need to run a distance event will force the likes of myself out of my comfort zone to run a 1500m at some point.

Just an idea that was bouncing around in my head. If anybody has anything to add or any other ideas throw them down here.

Genuinely think that the above could work if there is interest for something like this. A good way of bringing all the runners of this forum together, only a requirement to run one sprint event, and because it is based on IAAF points, and not a time goal of sub 60, more people will be inclined to give it a go, in order to score points for this competition. This wouldn't replace 10 Round Numbers, but run along side it as a separate thread. No point in doing it though unless there is genuine interest.

I think one of the main issues in adding more track and field events is the practicality of running multiple events. In general if you are focussing on one event, be it the 400m or the 1500m, then there are maybe two other events that would be beneficial to your training that you could run if your main event isn't on the card. If you start running events outside of these then you inevitably have to start sacrificing actual events where you would be competitive.

If you're getting thrown in to National League events or if there were decathlons available then this might be a different story. Also, if you're focus isn't track then you can show up and try multiple events at the graded meets like a few have done here in the past.

Next year, I'd like to give the 400m a go but judging from the set up of the graded meets in previous years, I don't think it will be possible.

There's no point in adding sprint distances, as it'll eliminate everybody. As it is, there's only a small group of 3/4 people who attempted the range of distances. Few (none?) of the sprinters tried the longer distances, and few of the long distance runners tried the shorter distances, so adding sprint events will only kill off the challenge. That only one person has completed it in the last three years (since the new format) while many have participated, suggests that it is already pretty well structured - hard, but not impossible. Why change it?

Instead, start a new challenge (as per the post above). Include all of the T&F events (that are available in the IAAF scoring tables) - best 4 to score (based on IAAF scoring). If it works (I'd give it a pop), great. If it doesn't, then Boards just isn't the right place for a T&F challenge. Just a reality.

Yeh you're probably right to be honest. I think if a 200m was added it would have to be easier than the 400m target (so maybe sub 28 instead of sub 27). The 400m is at least 50% aerobic at the sub 60 level, while the 200m is about 25% aerobic. I can't imagine many running in the 2:50-2:59 marathon bracket having the leg speed to run a 26. Anyway, it was just a suggestion, but probably wouldn't work as you say.

With regards sprinters not trying the long distances, it's not the same as distance runners having a crack at a 400m. It's much easier to step down in distance and have a go at a random race than it is to do the opposite. I think it would be detrimental for a sprinter to attempt a half marathon or marathon, while you have shown that trying a 400m race hasn't impacted your marathon training to any great extent. I had a go at the 5K this year, which I managed to achieve, and I can honestly say that I would not have bothered had it not been for this 10 Round Numbers challenge. But as for the entire challenge, I'd be reasonably confident in saying that there is not a sprinter on this planet who would be able to complete this. Maybe a strength based 400m runner if he gave up 400m training for a year specifically to achieve this, and even then it would be a long shot IMO.

Could also do a boards day out and do 200m / 400m / 800m events at it to complete the table.

Seems to be a couple of the ladies looking at doing the 200m so would fit in well on the ladies thread I think...I'd even give it a whack if I could...though it'd probably be in training so wouldn't be official :)

edit: though I've just checked the table and see the ladies only do the events from 5k upwards/ Maybe a push in the logs to get people to try for some of the distances!
