Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Its being lying idle for years now and is a huge eye sore. I always wondered how it got planning permission in the first place. Sure its beyond repair at this stage. Why can't they demolish it? It really is horrible.

It reminds me of that monstrocity in Central Dublin ,Liberty Hall . Both need to be demolished .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,319 ✭✭✭Trick of the Tail

Should have been razed to the ground years ago. Its a blot on the landscape, an eyesore overlooking the city.

The City Council have the power to demolish is and invoice the owners, but they don't have the guts to do it.

So best to just leave it rot there and make the city look terrible.

Nothing is the answer,IMO it has a minus value because the cost of taking down the building outweighs the value of the land, and it is a useless deign for a modern hotel .

This was uploaded in Jan 2011. Would nearly make you cry. Such a shame to let it go like this. Used to go up there often enough to the hotel and the gym. Looks like something from Chernobyl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,625 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

Is it all still there with just the hoarding on the front? You would think the cost of putting a car around it was more than demolishing it? Maybe not when the rubble had to be removed.

I think it says beautiful location for a hotel.

For a quick demolition ,get in the old I.R.A .THEY DONE A GREAT JOB WITH NELSONS PILLAR .(though i did not agree with that ,as they could just have took off Nelson himself at the very top .) .

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭Finnbar01

Wasn't there a castle on that site before? Does anyone know the name of it and any history about it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 301 ✭✭freewheeler

Flemings Castle was on the site before being demolished to make way for the hotel i believe...dont know any of its history though.

    could not agree more.....
the ard ri now it boarded up doesnt look to bad, the mills are appalling

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭Shane07

I wouldnt like to see the Ard ri go to be honest, this could have been a landmark building had it not been left go to rack and ruin! It still has amazing views for a hotel which hopefully it can be restored to in time.Deff agree with above posts the North Quays are in a awful condition with parts on the mill starting to fall down now!.Until the Ard ri is sold or whatever happens I think it should have art work painted on it or something rather than just the current white colouring!

Here ya go. November 2008 was when this thread was started and from the comments it was smashed up by then.

This article was uploaded in 2010. Says it was closed 4 years then. Not so sure about that

    The OP asked
What is happening with Jurys/Ard Rí Hotel

It was from this point of view that I rolled my eyes over a 5yr old thread.

This thread like most, went off topic, I stayed on topic.

Anyway hope ye all have a good and safe wan!

    Pedantic pat,

During the forum other questions were asked, I thought I was offering another perspective,

    You win,

I bet it's lonely at the top!

    To be honest,

    In fairness,

    Staying on topic and proud,

Not a great award to win,

The best forums go off topic

    So why have mods then!

There are special off topic forums anyway if thats your choice.

How in God's name can such a building be left derelict for nearly 10 years in such a prominent situation.

What's wrong with this town? Does anyone give a $hit? Or is everything OK because it's wrapped up in a bit of plastic?

I cant understand why they cant let Spraoi or some artists do an art piece on it or something better that just the white box look now! Is it still in Nama or was it bought?

As far as I know the whole back of the 'white box' is burnt black with a good while. I think there have been a few attempts to burn it down.

A typical tale of the Tiger. It was a successful hotel, the only one in town capable of hosting national conferences such as the ASTI and the INO which bring a huge spend wherever they go, not too mention local large weddings and dinner dances. Along come developers who look at all the empty green areas and think, why don't we buy this successful business, close the existing premises and get planning permission for an enormous hotel / conference centre / apartment blocks / assorted commercial units.

The MCEniffs were made an offer they couldn't refuse, the Hotel was closed and grandiose plans drawn up. Tiger dies, developer can't finance, Hotel falls into disrepair. An absolute tragedy for the City in terms of jobs and outside spend, never mind the eyesore.

  • Registered Users Posts: 963 ✭✭✭cococoady

How much are they selling the hotel / site for?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭obezyana

That hotel was in need of desperate tlc even before it was closed down. It was falling apart. It is a shame its gone it had great views of the town. It always was an eyesore and until its knocked it always will be. A nice upper class housing estate up there would be nice. :D

Should be bought and linked up with north quays development. Make the whole lot a park with a walkway over the dual carriageway and another walkway over the river. Put a cafe up the top
where the hotel was. Artificial ski slope on part of the hill. Cable car going like the ones in Barcelona from the top of the hill over to the Viking triangle. Might sound a bit far fetched but would be great for attracting tourists to Waterford and there is great opportunity through tourism for Waterford.

  • Registered Users Posts: 162 ✭✭JourneyMan8

some interesting idea's but agree with the last comment, think whatever goes in its place has to go toward generating tourism, the perfect place to build something crazy to attract, then get the shopping centre up and running off the back of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭obezyana

Yep anything up there tourist related could be the way to go but sorry about being the negative one, id reckon nothing positive from the council or government will ever be done up there.

A private group/developer will get the go ahead to build another ghost estate or retail complex. Obviously I could be talking out of my arse but given the nature of planning regs in this country i wouldnt be one bit surprised if that was to happen.

Ah many a day me and the lack used to go up there drinking cans of lilt and devouring packets of "banshees bones" I used to recite Julius Caesar in the voice of Richard nixon."Hence, home you idle creatures get you home!. I will shed some tears when this beautiful building is knocked, it is magnificently perched over city, keeping an eye on us.Oh I feel so much nostalgia permeate through my feeble john's Park body.I long to once again have a tryst with my lady friend, with a paper brown bag over her face as I perform lascivious acts on her genitals.

A row between two Kilkenny families in court apparently over who actually owns it. Disgraceful condition.

My understanding is that judgement was against Tracy's so they have appealed?
Am open to correction. Dreadful anyway, the site is a blight on the city and a deterrent to investment, as indeed is the Ferrybank centre. How many people really realise the latter is in Co Kilkenny, permissioned by them, and nothing to do with Waterford City planning?
