Somebody told me the launcher is using P2P tech to distribute the files, and suggested that I open Steam. Lo and behold it has been downloading almost solidly for the last 20 minutes and I should hopefully get a chance to fire up Elite soon.

Im still having no luck getting this to work. Start option on screen is greyed out and I cant click. No responce from tech support so far and anything I do does not fix problem:(:(

I'm gonna wait until the weekend to even DL.

I'd say the load its under today has it going nuts.

Played it for a few hours yesterday , Rift DK1 and a flightstick (no throttle thingy mind you, thinking of blue petering one up )
pretty good so far , no problem with docking or taking off , or basic combat , but had a hard time with the 2nd combat training onwards.
If they could allow you change the font size for people playing with VR it'd be perfect.

I had the old launcher for the Mercenary Edition solo-training missions. I got an error if I tried to log in. I redownloaded the launcher and it was completely different, logged in no prob and started downloading the main game. It got stuck around the 90-95% mark for a little while so I just closed the launcher and re-opened it and it was fully done.

What settings are people using on Keybard and Mouse?
I moved left/right mouse to Yaw and hold mouse2 to roll. I didn't know about the secondary fire button at that stage so I don't know what to do.

I'm gonna try switching on an EyeFinity group tonight to see how it plays across 3 monitors :D Didn't bother trying it out with the tutorial thing cause I wasn't sure how close to the final product that was gonna be.

Haven't been on this since early November but now, I'm back but to a bad start. Can't even log in...

Was DC'd about 30 mins ago mid hyper cruise. Start grayed out since. Also my cred seems reset and ship back to standard. I had some gimballed weapons and about 50k and an upgraded scanner in beta. Weird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,387 ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Why would you sell the sidewinder... it doesn't get you any money? (I got the mercenary edition so I got a free eagle along with it, I presume you did too?)

Sorry to hear you sold it but in the greater scheme of things, it wont be long until you get it back!

I'm up for joining a Boards group if there is going to be one...

bizzarelly , I found a saitek x52 in a charity shop here for a fiver.
was delighted as theres no way I can afford to buy one of them or anything with a decent throttle new.

sadly it turns out its totally dead ..:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,452 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Chance your arm complaining to Saitek about it?

just got myself a type 6 and pretty much fully upgraded it, needs the best fsd im 1 below it and same with power plant, got 96 cargo slots.
just done a rare good run for the first time in it and made 1,593,152 profit, thats pretty much paid for the type 6 and its upgrades. btw anyone who has access to the founder world, buy your ships their they have a reasonable discount on them.

Ok, I only picked this up 24 hours before launch and.... I'm kinda lost. :)

I've worked out how to trade (more or less... haven't figured out where to go to get cheap goods and where to sell them for high prices so its kinda hit an miss). I've made 20K just couriering stuff already though.

I'm lost about a few things, so if anyone who has been playing for a while can shed some light, that would be most welcome.

    1. Planets and suns that say "unexplored".... can you do something to set them to be explored? (I've sold astronomical data already but that seems to be just from main stars).

    1. My Eagle's starting location is 120,000LS from the nearby Sun and its a FREAKING PAIN to go there and switch ships. Can I ever leave this place without leaving a ship behind? (I can switch there but there will always be a ship left behind it seems...).

    2. I noticed a fight going on between a wanted guy and some Federal police. I decided to try to help out but as soon as I shot the bad guy (only!) and I got fined for shooting him... Should I be able to jump into these dog fights? Or do I have to get a bounty first and then hunt pirates?

I'm not much of an expert either, so could be wrong but...

With regards to trading, when you go to the commodities section of a station, highlight an item and on the right hand side it gives you a list of places that it's either imported from or exported to. This doesn't give you the place with the highest prices, but it's a good indication of where you can get a profit.

To scan, select the object from the left hand monitor and head towards it. While it's in the centre of the screen, you'll see to the left of the radar is the object you're targeting and above it (when you get close enough) an icon will start spinning (i'm not sure what the icon is, but you'll notice it spinning, like it's loading) and after a few seconds the object's details will be displayed.

I think all the scanners work like that, so if you also have the planet scanner, you do the same thing and it just gives you more details.

As for the bounty thing, I've noticed that too and haven't a clue what I'm meant to do. I'm rubbish at combat so try and avoid it unless I'm attacked. So hopefully someone else can fill us in.

This explains a lot of stuff:

The best way is to join Teamspeak with other players and bounce questions off them. I'll be away form my PC for a few days but will be playing again from Saturday onwards.

Do we have a Boards teamspeak? Or which team do you speak of? (dyaseewhatIdidthere???)

    1. You can swap ships, then open the "shipyard" tab and sell the one you swapped out of. However since it sounds like the one you swapped out is the free sidewinder you get nothing for it. ( i am not sure if you get some value from selling it if you had upgraded). Anyway the point is that this is a problem relating to teh free sidewinder and not to ships in general. However you do take a hit if you sell your ship - you get less back than you paid for it. I think that is 10% less or so. So there is an incentive to "store" a ship if you intended to go back to it.

    2. You don't get a fine for hitting a wanted guy, you must have hit someone clean or someone who you had not scanned to establish wanted status.

Just some useful stuff if you've not seen already: http://www.pcgamer.com/use-your-phone-tablet-or-voice-to-control-elite-dangerous/ Basically, use Rocat's Power Grid on your Phone/Tablet and/or VoiceAttack and a useful profile for the true "I'm flying a spess ship!" experience.

The thing is I like having the sidewinder as its got 4 storage and if I get blown up for any reason (like when I boosted by accident inside a space station and rammed into everything and they killed :) ) .... it costs nothing to restart.

The eagle I keep for hunting. The problem is that there will always be on ship left in that godforsaken 5-minutes-of-hypercruise hole. Since you say the hit isn't too bad on sale, I might take the Sidewinder, sell the Eagle and then rebuy it somewhere nice and close.

I was really careful about shooting him, he was the only thing on my screen and each time I shot him I got a warning about getting 200 CR fine for shooting him (something about federal blah blah... I didn't read it well because I was in a dog fight :) ). I shot him twice, got the message twice and then hightailed it out of there. Strange thing is... I'm not on record for having a debt nor am I prohibited from landing in Federal stations, so I dunno what happened. I'll try again...

Just got both of those (Voiceattack and the voice pack profile)... seems like great value at about 8 and 6 euro respectively.

Gonna try and find a decent joystick today in town (wish me luck!) and get my pew-pews on tonight on the projector :)

You will sell the eagle (if not upgraded anything) for about 40k if I remember correctly and it will cost about 50k to repurchase, so it will cost you in or around 10k to do this.

You may well be better off selling your eagle and putting that towards the purchase of a hauler, which can hold 16ton cargo if i remember right? That will enable much more earning potential from bb missions and normal haulage. Or mining if that's your thing.

caved and bought last night - its pretty good :) have an x52pro, and head tracking kit already, so seemed silly to keep holding out..

Yeah that's basically my choice right now. I have 20K in the bank and would like to upgrade to a hauler asap but I do also want to have a fighter to do some bounty runs too if I feel like it. The problem is , right now I hate having to fly all the way out to the dock to change ships...

I think I'll buy the hauler sooner rather than later and use it to make the money back to buy the Eagle somewhere else.

    Thanks for the advice!

Is hauling the best way of making money, or can you get decent amounts through combat? Not sure if i fancy spending any more time in a transport ship after doing enough of that in Eve.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

The balance appears to be tipped in Hauling's favour for money making.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,387 ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Seems to me like bounty hunting is the biggest payoff but if you lose, well... you have to rebuy your ship. That could be expensive!

I've seen some ludicrous money offered for bounties but I presume that they require you to either kill a lot of them at one time or to kill some pretty decked-out pirates. Early on, couriering is a safer way to get cash together but the payouts are less generally.

I have a mission to go get something for the Federation to get a improvement in level of some kind... its a tough run in the time allotted, what does an increase in status get me, anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,387 ✭✭✭✭DeVore

I found this: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6279 on the topic, but its a bit dry :)

I have to say, for a game of this status and time in development, the amount of explanation they do is pretty limited. I dunno if that's deliberate to make you feel like its a big universe out there to explore or if its just an oversight due to development pressure but it really leaves me feeling like there is a lot to do, I just don't really know how to do it.

Like, even the upgrade system on the ship looks daunting and complex... apparently I cant fit a mining refinery AND have a shield generator at the same time?? That seems nuts or else I'm misunderstanding things...

There was a Boards TS server floating around somewhere. If that's not active feel free to join the Gaellords.com one (host: gaellords.com no password), you'll even get a nifty Boardsie rank :p
