On Sunday I met some young men experimenting with one of the bikes at the Cathedral. It looked like they were involved in testing, a bit like non-destructive testing, only the other kind.

When I stopped they asked me how they were supposed to detach the bikes from the stands - I pointed out that they needed to pay.

When I took out my phone to take a pic they pulled up their hoodies and departed.

I love your way with words.

Might be useful if we could get a photo of what was put in? Reason might become obvious.

The only thing I can think of is the station possibly blocking the pedestrian crossing from St Clare's Walk laneway?

No it was ok. They had their own bikes with them and cycled off on the footpath. Being on a bike is like being touched by the Ganges River - all sins are instantly washed away.

    :D

Of course I am assuming they were their own bikes.

My guess is that some people are getting vexed about the loss of a couple of car-parking spaces.

I'll take a closer look next time I'm in town.

Meanwhile here's an extreme zoom from this pic.

Used the bike scheme for first time the other day - very easy to use, even for a technophobe. Bikes are grand once you get the hang of the gearing system, which takes about 30 seconds. I'll definitely be making frequent use of the scheme for running errands around town. Will be even better once they put a few more stations in and enlarge the area, and get locks so you can leave the bike while nipping into a shop etc.

got email from bikeshare.ie today re when the scheme in Galway City will be completed. i.e when the Bike Stations at City Hall, Galway City Library, GTI and Spanish Arch will be open. Got the following reply:
    "
Thank you for contacting Coca Cola Zero Bikes.
We will be getting all of the stations that are offline on the map up and running in the coming weeks.
    "

I emailed the Bike Share guys about the Fr Burke Road stand and they got back very quickly. They said "This station will be available to use in the next 5 - 10 days if all goes well.".

It looks ready to go but they must be waiting for data/power cable connections or something.

^ 8 days now since this 5-10 day estimate for GTI

I'm no rocket scientist, but isn't 8 days between 5 and 10? So they still have a couple of days...

They do. It's not rocket science but I think you're on top of it.

Nope: the CZBS stand starts at about the same place as the concrete bollard with the blue sign at the base of it in the google maps shot you linked to. No parking spaces are affected.

My guess is that it makes the street quite a bit narrower at that point, which may be causing problems for delivery vehicles taking goods to some of the places there.

I'll try to remember to take a photo next time I'm there in daylight.

You're absolutely right. No P&D parking spaces are being taken.

My impression of my own photo (the zoomed-in portion) was incorrect.

The CZ station is placed just after the dished kerb in front of St. Clare's Walk.

I happened to be in the general area today, mit camera as always, and had a quick look. I did wonder whether the bike station is a bit far out, but I forgot to check whether it* extends further into the road than the parked cars (legal and illegal).

    331360.jpg

    331361.jpg

    * Or, more importantly, how far the bikes will protrude.

It's only half the bike that protrudes so its pretty much the same width as a parked car. The ONE Way road is plenty wide

Can't help but think that is a badly located site tho. It will act as a permanent marker to cars parking on the left.

In which case, could the bike station rule out installation of a contra-flow cycle lane in future?

If so, that would be a bitter irony in a city where currently not a single metre of one-way road is designated two-way for cyclists.

Funny I had the same thought about Prospect hill.

I doubt that is the reason for the delay.
To be honest in Belgium they would not even put in a contra flow cycle lane here as general traffic speeds are low. They would just lob up a sign say One Way except for cyclists. Would probably need to remove some of the car parking though.

A City Tribune reporter has a good go at the shared bikes, and at cyclists, in today's paper.

Apart from slating the management of the project, he says the CZ bikes represent "196 new hazards" on the city's road network.

Apparently cyclists are -- collectively -- a contrary bunch who'd pick a fight with their own toenails and who make up the rules as they go along.

I had a chance to read this now. It was an editorial by Dara Bradley and he makes an important point. He makes the point that if there were bike stations in Salthill or Doughiska then people would be able to park their cars and cycle into town. This would alleviate congestion.

    He continues
But it would also cut off a revenue stream for the Council - through a reduction in parking charges at its city centre car parks. For city officials, money trumps traffic alleviation every day of the week.

Its hard to argue with that conclusion.

Use the bikes a few days ago. Bikes were decent, I did go wrong way on one way roads several times as there's so many one ways in Galway.
The 'basket' at front is 2 or 3 bits of a string elastic material with gaps in between. Don't know why they didn't put a proper basket in place, these ones are no good if you have smallish items.
    Overall happy with them though.

Noticed that too! Pretty useless for something like a bottle of water, etc.

Maybe it's a way of preventing people dumping/leaving items in it.

I'm not sure that this scheme is being given the maintenance it requires, half of the stations were offline today and people were parked right up against the docks in wood quay so you couldn't get any bikes out.

Noticed that. Its like someone decided to make a parking space where there isnt one.

I went down and had another look. I don't know if this is oversight or design but the car parking spaces have not being removed.

So motorists are encouraged to park up against the backs of the bikes. If this is intentional then it seems to me that the bikeshare station was installed the wrong way around. It should have been installed so that the bikes back onto the footpath.

Either way I would have thought some kind of barrier or railing is needed at the back of the stands.

    Mind yourself snubb.

The rack lock is fixed to the frame and you just push it into a connection to lock it to the rack.

I presume you mean the lock that can be used to lock the bike in a location other than the docking stations.
Don't think they exist just yet.

Don't know how beneficial that would be given that I sent them a query (wasn't covered in their FAQ) about 3 weeks ago with no reply as of yet, that query has coincidentally been answered on this thread though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,653 ✭✭✭yer man!

I did let them know of the matter but the phone number goes to a call centre in Wexford who know nothing outside of the FAQ and when I sent an email to their support contact I got back an out of office. I do hope they don't screw this scheme up.

If ever an example was needed of laziness in City Hall you could use this picture! Where to start. Bikes and station are in the wrong location(should be the other side of the road in the heart of Woodquay), too lazy to remove the road markings, removing disabled parking spaces.....

I e-mailed them today about the baskets (elastic, not great for holding small items) and they replied (this afternoon) stating-
We understand what you have said from a usability point of view. Unfortunately it is beyond our action at this moment in time as the bikes are not manufactured by us. Hopefully in the future baskets will be replaced with traditional mesh baskets.

Jeepers that's shocking. They didn't even remove the parking spaces? It seems as if the NTA is trying to implement a scheme for the good of Galway and Galway City council are trying to stop them.

EDIT: Was being fixed this afternoon. Will post pics later.

    From the Connacht Tribune website:
NTA says Galway public bike scheme proving popular

The National Transport Authority says over 1200 people have registered online to use Galway’s public bike scheme.

Since November 24th, the bikes, which are located at 19 docking stations across the city, have been taken out for more than 1000 trips.

The NTA says its half-price registration rate of €5 will remain in place until December 31st.

Is it possible for me to give someone a registration as a Christmas gift? Do they need to have an ATM card of their own to make payments, or can I put some money into their account, and they can top up later some other way?

Do the NTA not know there are NOT 19 docking stations across the city? Only 2/3 that amount and latest word on the street is that the City Library station is not going ahead along with the University Station and Fairgreen Tourist Office Station?
