Red Hot Chili Peppers are rubbish.

But *ducks head* the worst out there are the Foo Fighters, sound like a colour by numbers version of 'Rock'.

Also, EVERY AC/DC song sounds the same!

    Mumford and Sons.

To me it has to be the "Saw Doctors". I mean, ffs, the lead singer is actually 'tone deaf'.

Shouldn't this thread just be renamed 'List successful bands you don't like'?
That's a moot point though, as if they were unsuccessful then most of us would not have heard of them.

You can't overrate something you haven't been able to rate in the first place because you haven't heard of them!

That's his point. They are going to have to be successful to be overrated.

If you dislike/don't value the so called talent of a successful band whether popular or due to critical acclaim, you are going to class them as overrated which is the theme of the thread :)

Which was my original point, that is people just listing famous bands they don't like. Just because I don't like a band, it doesn't make them overrated.

You are into Kings of Leon, aren't you?

I think the same thing was argued on the 'most underrated band' thread.

If I call something overrated/underrated I just mean, in my opinion. That they are successful but I don't consider them to be as good as a lot of the majority. 'Overrated' is to have a higher opinion of someone or something than is deserved, anyway its only a bit of fun :)

So yea you could say 'successful band that you dislike but lots of other people like' - to me that means the same thing as you feel they are overrated based on popularity or for whatever reason you just think people think too highly of the band.

I have seen this a few times now but I just don't get it. Maybe in the last couple of decades there may be a bit of truth to it but looking at their back catalogue tells a different story. Rocker, Big Balls, Ride On, Ain't No Fun Waiting Round To Be A Millionaire, Squealer all sound nothing like each other and they're all from the same album, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, which should be in every rock fan's collection.

I've never got the love for Pink Floyd myself. They've had a couple of good albums but overall they're inferior to the grossly underrated Yes.

Tone is kind of irrelevant when you are singing about baling hay and banging the bangles. Love the docs myself;)

Personally I don't get why Hozier is so popular.

AC/DC may have only one song, but it's a f*cking good song!

I'm including solo artists in mine:

    The Clash

    The Jam

    Bob Dylan

    "Dave" Bowie

    Bruce Springsteen

    Michael Jackson

    Muse

    Beck

    Eminem

    The Strokes

    Foo Fighters

    The Libertines

    Keane

As for Wings, they were never critically rated, except for "Band On The Run". All their other albums were critically reviled, and McCartney solo albums that are popular now, like "Ram" and "McCartney II" are critically praised (see Pitchfork).

It's true that he has a lot of hype around him. A very marketable chap altogether. I really like his music though. Upon properly checking out his album it became quite clear that the man has talent beyond 'Take Me To Church'.

A lot of the bands mentioned in this thread seem to be bands who used to be great but are now well past their heyday.

Over-rated means being bestowed with excessive critical acclaim (in people's opinion) rather than being really popular like One Direction... I think anyway.

Errr... One direction have won many musical awards so yes, they are highly rated therefore in my opinion they are over rated.

Winning Music Industry awards isn't the same as critical acclaim, plenty of critically derided artists win awards and plenty of critically acclaimed ones never win anything. A lot of these awards are extremely populist nonsense these days, if not outright rigged.

MTV Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Nickelodeon Awards... don't really count.

    Christy Moore's appeal baffles me.

Some very decent work with Planxty, but as a solo artist, he comes across as a bit of a bluffer - very ordinary voice and a functional guitarist.

The kind of guy you'd expect to see in the corner of some Temple Bar pub, belting 'em out.

He's the reason why guys are in pub corners, belting them out!

I still find it amazing that the Script are booked for Croke Park next year. When it was first announced I thought they were just going to be support for a big name headline act.

Agree with most of the list but I wouldn't have The Strokes in there personally. They are past their best but Is This It is one of the best albums of the last 20 years and Room on Fire is pretty excellent too, great live band also.

For me Alt-J are massively over-rated, I've friends that worship them but I just don't see the appeal. Very dull music.

    The Rolling Stones.

A competent pub band, nothing more.

A lot of the bands mentioned also would still be rated well when compared with most of the bands today

So after reading this thread I've concluded an "overrated band" means "a band that I don't like that other people do"?

A challenge; Name one band that everybody would unanimously agree is not overrated?
