So why didn't nidge do away with him knowing this??

    Really bugging me.

Completely underestimates him perhaps? Nidge mistakenly believes he has Fran on the leash. Im not sure Nidge knows about the fiasco with Noelie's mothers grave.

Ah he has said on numerous occasions Fran is a but job.

He was willing to kill Patrick in case Fran found out.

He knows well what Fran is capable of.

Aye, he is under no illusions about Fran. He thinks the reward is worth the risk. i.e. a nut job like him is what he needs right now with so many enemies and a guy willing to do anything or anybody is very useful in getting back on top.

What do you think Nidge has in mind that it would require a nut job like Fran to carry out that none of his other cronies would be capable of doing?

What the hell is it with newspapers and Love/Hate spoilers. I thought it is pretty much a given that the vast majority of viewers (of any show) prefer to be surprised by the events that unfold as they are watching the show, not while looking through the morning paper.

Last season Nidge spent half his time looking for a tail.

Some people here need to relax a bit and just enjoy the show. Trying to pick holes with every single thing. At the end of the day it's fiction. Weird unpredictable things happen in real life too. Being as pedantic as some are in this thread, you could pick apart the Wire, Sopranos, even early seasons of Love\Hate and make them look bad

Oh dont worry, he 'wont' be watching tomorrow night, or the following week, or the week after that and the week after that ;)

    Its a guarantee

To be honest if you don't see a difference between Fran and his capabilities for psychoism as opposed to the others there really isn't much I can say to you :)

Something that is plausibly deniable by Nidge afterwards. Nidgeweasel has probably been studying political dirty tricks in his spare time. My guess would be either a move against Paulie as said above or killing a cop. Not that he's planning either right now, but both are possible in future.

Maybe you need to look at the question in its entirety again to understand fully?

I'm well aware of Frans mental instability. What I was asking was, What could Nidge have in mind that would require the need for a nut job to carry it out? If it was a simple hit? any of his crew would do, right?

The rest of his crew don't have a brain between them really.

Aido and Elmo couldn't even kill Darren and he was locked in a car, Nidge himself and Wayne couldn't kill Patrick last year and back before all that Tommy fcuked up a hit on Fran in S2.

Guinea seems to be competent enough but he hasn't really been tested, Wayne was lying down when he shot him and Lizzie was caught off guard, that could have gone wrong for him if she had the gun in her hand.

I don't think any of them could put in the work that Darren did in S3- going into detail about what Elmo's cousin called him so he would open the door nice and easy. The shower Nidge has at his disposal now would probably try to take the door down with an axe or something.

Fran and Guinea are all he has really and they're the best of a bad lot at that, I wouldn't trust Aido or Elmo at all if I was him.

Why do people always play the "oh you just don't understand the complex storyline" card when people point out ropey writing?

From last season Paddy fled for his life after Nidge tries to have him killed, now all of a sudden he comes back and not only attempts to kill Nidge, but then flat refuses a truce and cash and starts handing out death threats?

Also he started the sitdown by saying "I just wanna knock this on the head", Nidge puts his foot in his mouth once and suddenly he wants a war? It's just bizarre, and pretending you are understanding some complex story mechanics which explains all this even more bizarre

I don't get this either. Patrick leaving the country made sense: Nidge was so paranoid about Fran finding out about the pipe bomb that the option open to him was the boat.
Now, outta nowhere, we have Patrick swaggering back into town, suddenly ready to engage in a feud with Nidge.
    Huh??
fwiw, I love seeing this mollified version of Fran. But it's not in his nature to creep around with his tail between his legs. With the bitchy comments re Nidge dancing attendance on Paulie, we've already seen how frustrated he is. Unless Nidge can put him on some important operation soon, Fran will blow sky-high. He's useful to have around as a pet psycho, I suppose, but he definitely needs to be kept busy, and to be made feel important.

I don't see how folk are having so much trouble getting their head round this.

Is the only reason Pavee Patrick is keeping quiet about the pipe bomb, so that he can kill Nidge himself rather than Fran going off & doing it? (Sorry if that has been asked before)

Re the spoilers in papers I have seen 2 big ones characters getting killed off,
    Patrick and Elmo

A spoiler RTE may or may not have shown themselves but from last Sundays episode it gave away the trailer.
We see someone getting shot riding a motor bike, at a guess its Paulie

I'm pretty sure that if Fran is standing over him with a meat cleaver screaming "give me one good reason not to chop your head off", Patrick will probably spill the beans.

Personally, I find Fran to be one of the most engaging and interesting characters I have witnessed in any show/series. I think he will have a huge part to play as it unfolds. Some brilliant work by that actor.

Excellent episode, thought it was close to the best of season 2 and 3. Hopefully they can maintain the standard rather than tail off like season 4.

    Random thoughts.
Seems a waste that they took a filming unit to Marbella and all we get is a few montage shots from a car, and a meeting between Nidge, Terence and Paulie in a niteclub that could have been filmed in Ireland. Missed opportunity to have Nidge and others from his crew strutting their stuff on the bars/beaches. Hopefully more to come from the Spanish segments.

To people talking about 'changes in personality' of Fran, if theres a firearm at your head then you learn to suck a bit of gunbarrel quickly. Nidge begged with the IRA, Elmo begged with Darren, nothing unusual that Fran begged as well. Seemed consistent enough writing to me, Fran is a character with survival instincts and did what it took to get out of there alive.

Paulie a very good addition, perfect level of silent menace.
I guess Nidges new bodyguard was the role they had set aside for Keith Duffys gym character, before RTE allegedly vetoed it.

    ****
Thread fairly comical during and after the show, kind of brings it home to me why the soaps have to engage in epic levels of exposition in every episode in order to remind viewers with attention spans of goldfish of whats gone before. Some of the questions asked here were absolutely hilarious.
Its good that the writers here have decided on zero exposition. Whilst comparisons to the Wire are unfair I like the similar attitude of 'if you cant follow who is who, whats been said/done and its motivations then tough on you'.

What do you want? A couple of minutes of Elmo having brunch with his Mrs? That'd make for a great Love/Hate episode. He was in the episode for about 2 minutes in total.

    FFS.

I was thinking this myself. Duffys character was meant to be selling on some of Nidges shipment that was intercepted at the end of series 4. Maybe when Nidge starts moving Terrence's gear he will come back into it then.
