Is the X8H the best bang for buck around? It will be my first box so looking for a good one.

The Minix is a good box but as I am finding out it is not the answer to all questions. Best to give a view of what you are looking for and type of budget, you dont need to spend big initially on a box.....

    130-150 Max.

Movies and TV Shows with the usual sports access. Would like something that works well from the get go.
Something that doesn't require replacing after a year.

Agree with Big Nelly, its a good box hardware wise but the software at the minute is shockingly bad. There's a new firmware due out soon so really hope it address the problems this box has. For me its a massive upgrade over the MX2 but definitely isn't living up to my expectations yet.

140 ish for the M8 on Adverts, sold fully loaded as they say.

Updating firmware etc is something I'd rather avoid doing if possible.

The only way I could resolve it was going back to frodo 12.3.

Gotham never seemed to be stable on my box

120 is a price I like, these boxes are reliable firmware wise?

I've had mine about a month and it seems fine. I wouldn't be very technical though.

All the add ons seem to run fine on it .

Big Nelly or Allyall would probably have a better idea of firmware and that end of things.

For anybody looking at an M8 or Neo X8-H, read my post below taken from the NEO X8-H thread on bargain alerts. I received the Beelink S82 that I linked to in the post. I have found it to be a very good box, I actually received a higher spec box than I ordered, I got one with the Amlogic S802B chip, not the Amlogic S802 chip. The latest offical rom was released yesterday and I've updated and it's running fine. I'm using the box as a front end media/TV server, the live TV client is not as fast as a Linux or windows box but it's not bad and I'm sure as xbmc (kodi) matures on android performance will it will get better. For other media playback 720P , 1080P etc i've had no problems, I actually ordered two more :)

I've been looking at the M8 square box and other Amlogic S802 devices. Firstly there are alot of rebranded devices out there and some clones so be careful which one you buy. Check on freektabs to see if the model has been bought by others. From what I can tell the M8 square box and NEO-X8 have Bluetooth and dual 2.4/5 ghz wifi. The M8 ships with only 8GB storage, the NEO-X8 come with 8GB but the NEO-X8H come with 16GB. For me this is not a big deal.

From what I can tell the M8 square box ships with the Amlogic S802 only, I can't find a variant with the Amlogic S802B or Amlogic S802H chips. The NEO X8 ships with Amlogic S802, the NEO X8-H ships with Amlogic S802H. Again from what I can make out the Amlogic S802B chip can hardware decodes dolby digital, the Amlogic S802H chip can hardware decodes dolby digital and DTS. The Amlogic S802 chip can't hardware decode dolby digital or DTS and decoding has to be done through software like XBMC. For me this is not a big deal as I'd be using XBMC which software decodes.

The M8 square box and NEO-X8 have 2GB ram.

In the end I went with none of the above and went for what looks to be a Tronsmart Vega S89 Elite also known as the Beelink S82. It's a round box that comes with the Amlogic S802 chip, 8GB storage, 2GB Ram, Bluetooth and 2.4 ghz wifi. It doesn't have dual 2.4/5 ghz wifi but that is not a big deal to me, I'll be going wired and never had problem with 2.4ghz wifi. There are plenty of custom roms and it's well supported over on freektabs . I went for this because there are no reported clones on the market, the round pcb board is unique. There is a 16GB Tronsmart Vega S89-H model which has the exact same features of the NEO X8-H but costs less.

Also there are Linux roms for M8 square and the round Tronsmart Vega S89/Beelink S82

I'm awaiting delivery of this from the UK, total cost including parcel motel 74 euro.

This box is a lot cheaper than any of the others.

Did you have to load the box yourself? For the price I imagine you did. This isn't a big problem but still a noob as regards XBMC.

just seen that now myself strange only 1gb of ram but to be honest the mx2 dual core boxs only have 1gb of ram and they run xbmc great so i wouldnt think it would be a deal breaker

If buying a box really you need to look around. Check out geekbuying/gearbest etc and see what is available. If you do find box you like the look of then check out freaktab to see if there is firmware support out there for it.

I originally went for T-R42 from geekbuying: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/T-R42-Quad-Core-Google-Android-4-2-2-RK3188-28nm-Cortex-A9-1-6-GHz-Mini-TV-BOX-HDMI-HDD-Player-2G-8G-BT-RJ45-External-Wifi-Antenna-with-IR-Remote-Controller-Black-317424.html

To be honest this box was perfect and played everything. Also because there is so many sold the firmware options where great, I put Wasser firmware onto it and it was perfect. It played HD etc with no issues. I only moved to the Minix X8-H as I had more or less got the T-R42 running as well as it could and there wasn't much more playing I could do with it :-)

I went for Minix as it had good spec and I could ship in quickly from the UK, at extra cost mind you. If I had the time I would have probably shipped from China again

I would recommend looking at websites above, if you find a box just ask on here and someone will be able to advise quickly. Do not be concerned about firmware/loading up XBMC. There is a couple of wizards which add on everything for you and take about 5 mins.

You are paying over the top on adverts from what I can see, most of the people are just buying in cheap from China, running a wizard on it and putting on a huge margin.

I had never touched XBMC before Jan of this year, a couple of pointers from people on here and I was up and running in 20 mins....once I got used to it I started to play around and add more functions/features but these are only nice to haves....
