No, The Americans leased it and some of that group were being evicted but they sublet to the Irish group and the LL accepted this as she was getting rent, the Irish group left the property in good condition apparently but maybe not spotlessly clean but the American group then had access because the keys would have been returned to them as they were the Landlords for the Irish group.

Sounds very much like the Landlord is not insured for this damage and knows that the American group she leased to have no means and she will never see a cent from them and the easy option is to create a story about the Irish group so that the parents of these nice kids will do the decent thing and pay up!

Why do people assume that all Trinity students are loaded? It's such a lazy stereotype. Trinity isn't a private university, and the CEO process is open to everyone. Of course the majority of students are still middle to upper class, but you'd be surprised at the number of people there, who, like myself, come from poor backgrounds.

That isn't what's implied here. The J1er involved specifically calls them "their subletters".

Where did the original source on these other Americans come from? As far as I can see it's only from that one Journal comment and possibly Newstalk (I didn't hear the broadcast kneemos is referring to).

Because Dublin is still the most expensive place to get educated at third level in Ireland when one takes the cost of living into account. Added to that Trinity has a prestige factor that causes parents to want their children to go there in the same fashion as Oxbridge or the Ivy League.

Yeah, I think so. It's certainly part of it.

I couldn't relate to the vast majority of students in Trinity, for one reason or another. And there's plenty of snobs there, that's for sure. But this 'rich Daddy' stuff is wearing a bit thin. Walk into the library on any given day and you'll see plenty of people working their bollocks off go get ahead in life. That was my overriding impression of Trinity: people trying to better themselves.

To be fair one of the facebook vids has the lovely lads doing the ice bucket challenge. This involves two of them walking into a room and dumping a large icebox full of water onto a chap sleeping on the the floor.

They had no respect for the place and clearly they wrecked it when leaving.

First of all that eviction notice was for our sub-letters, americans. Supposedly 3/4 of them were continuously evicted however while we were living there paying the full rent money every month and keeping our house in top shape the letter arrived to us.

So letters arrive to evict the Americans but the Irish are living there? Why evict the Americans if they have already left or have not arrived yet?? This guy is using the word sub-letters to mean they were letting to the Irish group not the other way around. that is the only way it makes sense!

The letter wasn’t directed to us and we aren’t even named on the house and we left the house in actually a better shape than we got it the moving company had the place completely empty mostly removing any clutter that was in the house when we moved in and I have photographic evidence of our house completely empty with no broken furniture and everything fully in working order. So if you wouldn’t mind removing this post i would greatly appreciate it and maybe do some research and get onto the solicitors if its your business because you are seriously mistaken.

So at least one person has photographic evidence of the house being in good condition when the Irish left and the removal people would not be too hard to track down to ask them if they noticed any particular mess about the property because lets face it if you had to remove stuff from a house as it appeared in the video you would remember it as a complete wreck!

The CEO process is open to everyone but Irish education doesn't operate by Napoleonic code "I.E circumstances of birth often entail an educational advantage". The relatively well off can pay for a better education.

Or he's lying, which would also explain the inconsistency. As I said I'd very much like a source for this alleged American subletting group because as far as I can see it comes from one comment on Journal.ie and allegedly a Newstalk broadcast, the former preceding the latter.

All I've seen so far is a not very comprehensible or credible denial posted in the comments section of thejouranal.ie, that could have been posted by anyone, since reported on by Newstalk.

I recall that when a similar scandal happened in San Diego about ten years ago, subletters were also blamed for all of the damage. Unless the main tenants are willing to provide more details of these mystery subletters than a comment on thejournal.ie then they're still in the frame as the guilty parties.

Am I missing something here?

I think that ought to be the overriding impression people have of every university in Ireland, certainly I could offer no different impression of the libraries in UL or UCC or their occupants.

Anything is possible, but taking the collective information from the last 48 hours into account it seems quite unlikely.

Her allegation is that she rented her house to the Irish students and when she got it back it was trashed. The counterclaim of the only J1er who has so far responded is that it was either sublet to them or they sublet it to another group and that they group did the damage.

If they sublet it, they're still responsible for whatever damage occurred. If they were sublet to then how did the landlady find out about them?

No I don't, but the fact someone would do it inside tells me a lot about the character of the individuals.

No mops or sheets of plastic will protect floors from bucketfuls of water.
Also same lads posted how it was 7 of them in the beginning and it grew to 50 and how great it was.
