Cant help but think these are the types who'll think making it onto CNN, TheJournal, causing a Reddit stir etc makes them "legends" rather than idiots.

I don't agree with the redditors though. Sharing the story and their friends and family getting wind of it are consequences. Angry strangers trying to dole out justice by distributing their personal information, harassing them and trying to get them fired is another thing entirely.

Well if all that happens to them is that some hack writes a story in one of the above, yes, they probably would consider themselves legends.

However if they got fired for it, their like might consider the consequences of destroying private property in future.

I'd have no problem with people contacting their employers to let them know what their "future leaders" were at over the summer. All the better if the scumbags got fired.

While I don't agree with going as far as contacting their employers directly, however if their names happened to be printed in a national newspaper and the employers then also happened to read those names I would have absolutely no problem with that

That makes no sense at all. Why does it make a difference if a journalist tells the employer than if some random person off reddit does?

And what do you think the likelyhood of a paper doing that is?

    I would say about nil.

Its semantics really, but a random reddit person is being vindictive and trying to force justice, whereas a journalist is simply doing their job by reporting the facts about a story.

Oh I agree but that still doesn't mean taking justice into your own hands is correct way to go about this.

Chances are by now their family and friends know all about this and to me thats enough

According to Newstalk the house was sublet to Americans and they were the ones that did the damage.

    So apologies all round then?

Also, sublet my hole. They're saying that now that they got caught out,

Odd that they'd say it but not have their website reflecting the same, maybe just a time delay in getting it updated.

TBH one outlet contradicting another outlet and a good bit of supporting info dug up from now deleted social media pages isn't the tipping of the scales for me yet. If I was one of the J1ers being accused and was innocent I wouldn't be staying quiet and trying to get rid of my online presence.

Did they explain how the arrest information belonging to the named fella ended up in the house if there were Americans living there?

It was mentioned that the lads had said on FB or something that it had started with 7 of them and ended with 50. So who knows who did the actual damage? It might not have been them at all, but they still ran, and left their mess and belongings behind along with the damage so it looks to me that they would be held responsible regardless of who actually did the damage. They signed the lease, so the house was their responsibility.

    I see.

Regarding the subletting that'd also raise the question where exactly the J1ers were living while all this went on? How did they collect the rent? How did they not notice the state of the place? Did they not inform the landlady that they were subletting? Lot of questions there.

The problem is that if this continues the J1 visa might just be withdrawn or tightened up.

It's intended for use by PROGRAMS offering an element of cultural exchange, internships etc etc

If a minority of Irish students cause havok they'll start asking how these trips are "cultural exchanges".

Too many people are abusing the visa and just using it to go to the US to go "on the tear".

It's morphed from something useful into something more like US college students going to Mexico on Spring Break.

If enough American communities, particularly local police departments start making complaints, you'll find it'll get scrapped or tightened.

For the most part Ireland's students actually get much easier access than UK students for example.

I've even heard some Americans arguing that it's displacing Americans from minimum wage summer jobs too, so I would be concerned that creating a bad impression, even if its a very small minority doing it could see a radically altered J1 that might restrict it to camp councillors, genuine interns etc

For a lot of participants it's a genuinely useful and interesting way of seeing the US for a few months. For others they just see it as a 3 month holiday.

They should at least be grown ups and split the bill between them and deal with the aftermath of their mess.

America would not even have a country if it were not for Irish going over and killing Native Indians and Mexicans and working hard and fighting the red coats for Independence. And this is how they treat us the old drunk Irish steriotype they were waiting to tag us with again.

So his story is that the person named in the video was one of the American subletters and by complete coincidence one of the members of the J1 group who has since deleted all of his social media presence has exactly the same name.

He also doesn't address how the house could've been left in that if the American subletters had been evicted because surely the J1ers, being the nice lads he claims they are, would've cleaned up as much as they could rather than leaving it in that state.

Likewise if their names were not on the property and their subletters were legally evicted how could the landlady be unaware of what was going on because surely she would've received some form of notification.

    Very curious stuff.

All I would say is that American culture can be remarkably conservative about stuff like this.

Despite the partying hard on movies and notions of spring break, they're a pretty serious bunch and have very hard line notions about loud parties and alcohol.

It can be a very "buttoned up" society in many respects so I think it's quite hard to put it into a 2014 Irish or English context.

Very possible that the letter was in the bins outside and when the americans who had originally leased the property and were being evicted trashed the place they brought the contents of the bins inside and scattered them around.

    It's a bit of a stretch though isn't it.
