All messing aside, and I know you love your car, but when thinking about a journey and one of your thoughts is "wonder if the car will make it" then it's time to get something else :o

In other news who would have thought an Alfa could get this far :p

I should probably have said, fuel consumption up there :o I know the car will make it :P

Edit: sorry Stheno if it looks like I'm taking the piss, I'm really not :(

My gtv got to 144k miles aka 230k kilometres :) so nothing to be worried about in terms of taking the piss. Hopefully it will live on, just not with me as I can't justify the expense, and to be perfectly honest, I was (as per previous posts) genuinely thinking of moving on (just not right now when I am broke :D)

It was also my freedom car, I bought it after a relationship split, and it was great fun, I remember you driving it and having fun :)

And I've always wanted a Saab, so I might be going from having a car I always wanted, bought for feck all and minded but had some bad luck with at the end, to having another car I've always wanted. It might be a temp car right now, but may become another gtv!

I genuinely cannot thank everyone who offered help and advice since yesterday enough, I am overwhelmed at the kindness on here.

    Thanks to you all.

One thing I'd love to do is get a better understanding of car mechanics.
Is it worth doing one of the night courses that arre around?

As you probably know I work in IT, but not in the tech side, but have to interact a lot on the tech side, so get an overview of everything.

My mechanic is super and most of the time I get what he is on about and can find analogies (like my grandfather clock analogy)

    What do you guys recommend?

I've just gathered that its how to do basic things, check oil/coolant/ steering fluid, that kinda thing, nothing compared to some of the stuff you'd see here

I'd start by getting hillers fundamentals of motor and vehicle technology 1. Great book it literally explains every component on a car what it does how it works. Can be got on amazon fairly cheap I think the book is actually used on some car mechanics courses.

I did a bit of quote surfing tonight with some of the cars I've saved in my donedeal garage :D
The one thing I've noticed is that insurance companies still make zero sense!
It was nearly impossible to get a quote on a 2003 E270 but a 530d no problem
I think did a check on a 1.9 120bhp 93 and just couldn't go under 900e, I've got 2 years NCB, 8 years with a full licence and no accidents and yet I my crappy Volvo is so far the cheapest for me to insure.
Eh rant over - FCUK YOU INSURANCE!!!!

Sure I do that every week/fortnight lol

That's what I am after, I really want to understand better when I am talking to my mechanic (who already thinks I am the ideal woman to deal with lol) I get stuck though with issues like today, I thought an engine replacement would cover everything, then he was on about valves and pistons and I'd no idea.

Anybody have any dealings with Oliver Geoghean Motors in Galway or H&H Autos in Kinsale? They are looking at cars for me at the minute. Thanks

Went to look at a car at his place over 2 years ago now, seemed like a genuine bloke and a genuine car, he seems to sell more high milers, hence the reason I didn't buy.
I'm off to sligo tomorrow it seems, should be interesting to see how the 9-5 fairs up to that length of a journey

Keep away from that utter kip :P Say goodbye to your rims :pac: Don't think we have any Sligoeens on here do we?

So I went to the car this morning to go and do my weekly shoppoing when I notice some oil stains under the car.
Opened the bonnet and checked the levels but all seemed fine.
Off I went anyway and within seconds new that the turbo seals have packed in :(
Feck all acceleration, blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and even trying to accelerates makes the car try and push you back.
Well pi33ed off as I still needed the car for another month. Eh looks like it's the bus for me.

    Long shot lads

But does anyone remember that really big midway meet about 2 or more years ago where it was a big turnout and i racked up a speeding fine on the way down ?

    Why?
I'm sure someone does, however that was behind my time here - I think my first meet was in 2013
